The Gerrittsen Beach Fire Department is going to have that $520 bill, paid by our elected officials.
The bill is going to be split three ways amongst Councilman Lew Fidler, Assemblyman Alan Maisel, and State Senator Marty Golden. However, at this time this same bill will come up next year if the city council does not exempt the Vollies from this tax. Paying this bill now is a short time fix.
As a long term fix, Councilman Fidler has introduced legislation to exempt the Vollies and similar organizations from this fee.
A child will be killed or maimed before a traffic light is installed at the corner of Gerritsen Avenue and Channel Avenue. This corner is the morning entrance to our elementary school. We started the school year without a crossing guard assigned to the corner. When a crossing guard shows up for work, the motorists disregard her commands to stop. The mothers and children cross at great peril. The community has tried for years at no avail to protect the children. A child had to die at the hands of a motorist before a traffic light was installed at the main entrance of the school. Help save our children.
State Senator Marty Golden received approval for a flashing light at the location in the summer of 2010. Surprising amounts of traffic lights have been installed around our community but we cannot get this desperately needed one up and working. October 13, 2010 Representative Anthony Weiner wrote Brooklyn Borough Commissioner of Transportation, Commissioner Palmeiri that he secured funding (through SAFETEA-LU) for such a light in 2005 and urged him to use the money to make the neighborhood and school safe for the residents. Although a flashing light is insufficient, no work is being done to install the light.
Gerritsen Avenue is the main thoroughfare of this peninsula community. It is heavily trafficked when the children are arriving at school. The motorists are in a hurry to get to work and will not slow down for our precious little ones crossing the street. Save our children please!

A 50 + year battle to get a traffic signal at Channel Avenue has come to an end – thanks to the Gerrittsen Beach Property Owners and State Senator Marty Golden.
State Senator Martin J. Golden is today announcing that he has received notification from the Department of Transportation that a flashing yellow light has been approved for installation at the intersection of Gerritsen and Channel Avenue.
A flashing yellow traffic light indicates that there is a congested road or dangerous intersection ahead. The signal means motorists should slow down and approach with caution.
The corner has long been one of much concern for the entire Gerritsen Beach community as well as the school community of P.S. 277. Senator Golden has met with DOT officials and the Gerrittsen Beach Property Owners Association on site at this location to observe the traffic study, and has repeatedly contacted the Transportation Department and requested traffic calming measures be considered for this intersection.
A date for installation has not been scheduled.
Senator Marty Golden stated, “This is a great day for the community of Gerritsen Beach and for the safety of all residents. This is a day that has long been wished for by parents, teachers, and students of P.S. 277, as
well as the residents of the neighboring streets throughout the community. Finally, after continued efforts and support from the community, including the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association, we have been able to get approval for traffic safety enhancements at this intersection. With the new school year set to begin next month, this news could not have arrived at a better time.”
Golden concluded, “I am hopeful that the installation of this traffic signal will be completed soon. The community of Gerritsen Beach has waited long enough to feel safer and more comfortable when driving along Gerritsen Avenue at Channel Avenue. We thank the Department of Transportation for approving this signal
and for their continued attention to this intersection.”

Last week was Marty Golden’s energy town hall it was designed to discuss our public utilities and our energy services. In attendance was Con Edison, Verizon, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
The main topic was Con Ed and the benefits of solar.
Solar was heavily discussed. Basically there are tremendous tax credits: Federal Income tax, State Tax, NYC property tax. In an friend of a friend story that was used as an example: John Doe paid no Federal Tax, No State Tax, and had his property taxes cut almost by half for three years. For approximately $8,000 in up-front cost you can have solar panels which would put your electric bill less than $20. Your return on your investment depends on your usage but kicks in after a few years or if you sell your house.
With Con Ed for us in Gerritsen Beach’s old section – if you have a utility pole in your backyard that is degrading or damaged call Con Ed. Also, with summer coming Con Ed wants to be prepared if power lines are too close to a tree – call 311 or con ed. They will come out an inspect it. The community’s power lines are inspected every three years.
Seems like instead of complaining Senator Golden is offering a decent solution to restore overnight bus service to Gerritsen Beach.
Senator Golden is proposing re-routing one B3 bus per hour down Gerritsen Avenue and then have it continue back along its regular route.
The east bound B3 currently travels past Gerritsen Avenue and Avenue U, and it is being proposed that at this point, it could turn south bound and go the 1.4 miles to the end of Gerritsen Avenue, stopping in the B31 bus stops. Upon reaching the end of Gerritsen Avenue, the bus could then turn around and return to its regular route.
