The DOT repaired Gain and Hyman at Seba Avenues today. Which is a confirmation of the city ownership and responsibility of the courts.
Who knows if this was brought on by media pressure. However, The DOT did originally walk away and say a violation would be in the mail to the homeowner, until GerritsenBeach.net and PIX stepped in.
We are very much glad this was repaired. Please report any other dangerous road conditions by calling 311.
Recently, a resident of the Old Section called 311 to report street damage and a pothole on Gain Ct and Seba Avenue but instead was hit for a sidewalk violation. The circumstances surrounding this story are going to blow your mind.
It’s a known fact that the Old Section has no traditional sidewalks, in fact it’s a running joke. However, you may not know that – every entrance – to each court is in severe disrepair. Many are crumbling, some have huge gaps between the street and the curb, and most are sloped in such a way that every car “bottoms out” when entering.
Severe disrepair
When a DOT crew came out to repair the street damage at Gain and Seba the homeowner was horrified when they were told that the street is considered a COMMUNITY DRIVEWAY and that they would have to pay for the repair. The crew was so bold as to suggest to the homeowner should get everyone on the block to help pay for the repair. They left without repairing the damage.
The street at Gain Ct and Seba and most courts is approximately 18 feet wide, the homeowner is being told they have to pay for the 9 feet of Gain Ct and the opposite connected homeowner would have to pay for the other 9 feet.
This is very bad news, there are approximately 60 of these streets in the old section , which means that there are 120 homeowners that may be forced to pay for street repair.
Hyman Ct and Seba Ave - Disrepair over and over again all over the beach
The other night in the early morning hours an older woman went to park on her block and found more than half of it reserved by objects. She decided to move one object so she could park on the block and found her tire flat the next day.
How neighborly.
According to an anonymous email, here is the story:
Here are some pictures of the garbage pails that are put out on a daily basis to save parking spaces for the residents of 18 Lois Avenue. I live on the other side of the street at (redacted). I never have moved any of the pails before to park. However Saturday evening I came home around 12:30am ALONE and was NOT going to park three blocks away when there were at least 4 spots in front of that house and then walk by myself home, so I moved one, only one of the 5 garbage pails that were out there and in the morning I came out and found my tire flat. Someone pulled the valve out. I thought the tire was slashed but it wasnt. The valve cap is missing and the valve was pulled out. I had an air pump in my car and that is what you see. It took me a good 45 minutes to fill my tire back up with air and fix the valve. Good thing I wasnt on my way to work that morning.
There seem to be more and more garbage cans, cones, buckets, etc ALL OVER Gerritsen Beach. Reserving parking spots all day and night. It gets ten times worse in snow which we totally understand why. When you’ve gone and spent hours getting your car out from a pile of dirty snow few things are as irritating as losing “your” spot and not being able to find another one.
If you couple the “dibs” mentality with that pesky Gerritsen Beach retaliation, you get a story this.
This woman is not the only person this has happened to. GerritsenBeach.net has gotten multiple emails and voice-mails of parking wars and notes being left on cars about parking in someones “spot”.
Why should people who live on their block not be able to find a spot when available? What about the people who don’t live here? Like our home health aids who take care of our elderly. What about contractors? Hell, what about family and friends? We can’t always assume that the people who are trying to park here actually live here.
What gives us the right to live by our own rules? Why do some think they can do whatever they want?
While all if not most of the beach has been plowed Canton Ct. between Cyrus and Seba Av has not been plowed because of this unregistered – no plate – range rover.
Coming in via email
This selfish car owner(who was part of your cone story) left his car there the night of the storm and walked home. Now he is not even home to move the car. No effort has been made. Now we are one of the only blocks that cant get plowed. We still have THREE feet of snow on the block! They did put a single Delaware plate on it yesterday maybe so it does not get towed. Multiple calls to 311 and to the 61 desk have gone answered
Gerritsen Beach residents have been digging themselves out block by block as santation lags behind with their snow removal operations
In the video above, a group of stand up guys have been going around in what they are calling “the big dig” – rescuing ENTIRE blocks by shoveling out car sized paths.
It’s great when the community comes together like this. Even today the Daily News featured the Vollies and the neighborhood coming together to shovel and plow Dictum and Channel Avenue to get a medical emergency from a dictum court home to the GBFD ambulance.
The Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department has been ready to handle any Gerritsen Beach emergency since the start of the blizzard.
The FDNY and EMS response times have been completely compromised during the blizzard. Any normal type of response to Gerritsen Beach would be difficult if not impossible. The Vollies have taken up that slack going on multiple emergency medical calls.
Halloween in Gerritsen Beach is always bad, but in years past the police at least attempted to show up even if it was a lacking response. This year the teens ran unchecked by police and terrorized a neighborhood all day and night.
50+ teens held their ground at Gerritsen and Florence Avenues and Seba Avenue Park for a better part of Halloween. They formed a firing line on both sides of Gerritsen Avenue. They were throwing eggs, shaving cream cans, potatoes, rocks, at anything that drove past and anyone who dared to confront them. They even started throwing eggs at people, parents with young children and strollers. One parent said “I saw them jump a delivery car with kids banging on it, eggs getting slammed into it and some ran on the car”
Everyone was calling 911. There was not one person on Gerritsen Avenue who was not on the phone with 911, or the 61 and 63 Precincts desks. No police responded.
An older man in his late 60′s was driving along Gerritsen Avenue when his car was hit by eggs, when he exited the vehicle he was pelted by dozens of eggs, rocks were thrown, chucks of brick, and someone tossed a hammer. Parents and community members stepped in to protect this man and started to chase the kids to away.
As the Vollies were investigating a possible weed fire. Fire Chief John Czapp’s jeep was pelted and he was hit in the face with an egg. No police responded.
NO POLICE SHOWED UP TO RESPOND. Let’s let that sink in. After possibly dozens or more 911 calls over a two to three hour period NO ONE SHOWED UP.
If you thought the kids behavior was disgusting, the police behavior was incomprehensible. Everyone felt helpless as the neighborhood was terrorized by the teens
After a few hours the 61st Precinct did sent one marked car which was pelted. But as soon as it pulled up the kids ran back weeds and the patrol car left. The kids cheered in victory. The officers did not exit their vehicle nor speak with anyone. They simply left.
The 63 did send two community affairs officers who were also pelted in their unmarked car. They did exit their vehicle and pursued the teens by walking on foot to see if they can catch some of the kids. The kids being locals – immediately ran to the woodchips and exited at channel.
They put out of commission three buses. Shutting down the B31 line. The bus operator and bus supervisor called 911 – No response.
They pelted a deliveryman on a moped assaulting him – No police response.
In a classic hate crime approach the teens also chased two hasidic jewish men throwing rocks at them
They covered cars on Gerritsen Avenue with shaving cream.
GerritsenBeach.net has been covering Halloween for years now. This was by far the worst Halloween. It was not even this bad when the previous 61 Commanding Officer Captain Stella neglected the neighborhood. At least he sent marked patrol cars and supervisors down at the last minute. However Deputy Inspector Mastrokostas seems to have abandoned Gerritsen Beach letting criminals terrorize the neighborhood, leaving residents to resort to vigilante justice. Shame on them.

After some clarification by the NYC Sanitation Community Affairs office the resident that was ticketed for “Sidewalk” was actually ticketed for blocking the crosswalk at Canton and Bartlett.
Cyrus Avenue is the BUSIEST avenue I dare say in Gerritsen Beach. Apparently it’s so jam packed that parking spaces are going for $125 monthly on Craigslist!
What do you get for $125? “1 car parking spot in fenced in yard located in Gerritsen Beach. 1 Block from water.”
