[via Sheepshead Bites , NY1] October 10th marked the four year anniversary of Michael Sandy death at the Plumb Beach rest stop. Sandy was killed by three young men who tried to rob him and chased him onto the highway, where he was killed by a car. His attackers were convicted of hate crimes. On Friday, a park bench at the rest stop was dedicated to Sandy’s memory. It’s something you don’t hear often but the MTA has restored service at the manhattan-bound Avenue U and Neck Rd stations. Completing a two year restoration project. If read that headline you should be asking yourself the Old Section has sidewalks? Well, no they don’t – at least not really. But a sanitation enforcement agent believes there is enough of a sidewalk to issue a parking violation for “Sidewalk” According to our tipster the parked car was parked a good distance from the intersection – more than enough for a garbage truck to make the turn. The summons says “Code 50 “Sidewalk” Sub Section 4-08″ and is for $115 According to the city Code 50 is: “Stopping, standing or parking in a crosswalk. Note: Crosswalks are not always identified by painted street markings.” I didn’t realize that Canton Ct at Bartlet Place had a unmarked crosswalk. Essentially this means that everyone on Canton Ct and entire Old Section is parking on the sidewalk. The Old Section already can’t park on dead ends, what are they to do now!? We will keep you informed on the status of this ticket. Dragonetti The Parks Department has been busy all week clearing the land across from the library for their new forest. Yesterday, they started to bring in trucks full of woodchips to act as the ground floor for their trees and shrubs. The planting event is set for Saturday, October 23rd 2010 Our Parks manager is working on getting a plan together to work with other city agency’s to remove any large debris that has formed over the years.
The Department of Buildings is full of sting operations these days. They troll craigslist and classified ads looking for illegal apartments and contractors looking to do work without telling the city. The Buildings Department has been running string operations in the morning at multiple locations on Gerritsen Avenue. It is fun to watch, here’s the deal: They call up contractors telling them they want their services without permits or go notifying the city. As soon as that happens DOB inspectors complete with bullet proof vests pull up and ambush the contractor. “They have no guns and often encounter dangerous situations and are simply not given enough manpower and backup,” Local 983 VP Joe Puleo told the Daily News. The Knapp Street sanitation garage, aka BK 15, recently received 3.1 Million for landscaping and trailer renovations. Construction is currently underway You may be asking why do I have “temporary” in quotes. Well if you didn’t know: the community was promised that this was ONLY going to be a “temporary” location until another garage was built on Neptune Avenue. Here’s why…Back in the day when Keyspan (now National Grid) merged with Brooklyn Union Gas. Keyspan decided not to keep the Neptune Avenue Brooklyn Union Gas facility. However, The city was very interested in turning the site into a dual sanitation garage which would cover CB 13 and CB 15 (us), which desperately needed it. As you can obviously tell, that plan never happened. In part due to the area being massively contaminated, but mainly because the city never put any money aside for the project or for a Request for Proposal to be sent out. In the meantime BK 15 still needed temporary home, which for us turned out to be Knapp Street. Which they all said would be temporary. Despite the mayor issuing a 5% cut city wide the other day, the city just gave the Knapp Street location 3.1 million dollars for trailer renovations and berm style landscaping around the facility. “Berms” in landscaping are small sweeping hills that are usually created for the purpose of creating height and interest. Trailer renovation? Seriously? What could you possibly need to run a garage that is not already there? “3.1 Million Dollar dollars means they are planning a long term stay.” Said Theresa Scavo CB 15 Chairperson. “Even if the keyspan facility was available tomorrow it would still take five years of processing to get someone going.” We agree with CB 15 chairperson, this is a long term stay. Why would they be fixing up the place otherwise? Our question is why would the city invest this money into a temporary location when the thought process was to move BK 15 to the Neptune Avenue facility. Personally we don’t care for the landscaping that whole strip looks like a mess and is industrial anyway it does not NEED to look good. Apparently people in “Garraton Beach”(watch video) are fuming mad about the lack of crossing guards & “taking away a crossing guard is really just the icing on the cake”. I do like how they were speeding on the avenue and standing in the middle of the street to get their shots. The vines and weeds along the soccer field fence have gotten a bit out of control. At the most recent Property Owners meeting the vines and overgrown weeds on the soccer field fence were discussed with State Senator Marty Golden. The Senator intends to contact the Parks Department to clean up that area as soon as possible. |
