NYC DOT to Old Section: Pay Up!

Gain Ct and Seba Avenue - In Disrepair

Recently, a resident of the Old Section called 311 to report street damage and a pothole on Gain Ct and Seba Avenue but instead was hit for a sidewalk violation. The circumstances surrounding this story are going to blow your mind.

It’s a known fact that the Old Section has no traditional sidewalks, in fact it’s a running joke. However, you may not know that – every entrance – to each court is in severe disrepair. Many are crumbling, some have huge gaps between the street and the curb, and most are sloped in such a way that every car “bottoms out” when entering.

Severe disrepair

When a DOT crew came out to repair the street damage at Gain and Seba the homeowner was horrified when they were told that the street is considered a COMMUNITY DRIVEWAY and that they would have to pay for the repair. The crew was so bold as to suggest to the homeowner should get everyone on the block to help pay for the repair. They left without repairing the damage.

The street at Gain Ct and Seba and most courts is approximately 18 feet wide, the homeowner is being told they have to pay for the 9 feet of  Gain Ct and the opposite connected homeowner would have to pay for the other 9 feet.

This is very bad news, there are approximately 60 of these streets in the old section , which means that there are 120 homeowners that may be forced to pay for street repair.

Yellow Light Installation Started – Not Where You Think

DSC_1883

Installation has started of the flashing yellow traffic signal that was promised on Gerritsen Avenue. Yesterday, the Department of Transportation, ran the conduit for the power for the poles approximatively 150 feet away from actual intersection of Gerritsen and Channel Avenues.

This effectively kills any chance for a full (red, yellow, green) traffic signal at the actual intersection.

Last year, for the upteenth time, the property owners requested a new traffic study for Channel and Gerritsen to try and get a full traffic signal. At the time, it possibly could have been funded though Anthony Wieners “Green Streets” money. However, when the traffic study came back we did not qualify for the full traffic signal. The in and out (North/South) traffic was good enough but from Channel to Gerritsen (East/West) was not.

The association then proposed a flashing yellow signal, the thought being, that although it might help, it was more important to get the DOT to install everything: the power, poles, etc because then it would be a very easy switch for a full traffic signal.

Then without a community input or any type of presentation, the DOT started work 150 feet away from the actual intersection completely backfiring on the original plan. Now it seems like any hope for any type of full traffic signal at Channel has died.

DOT Shoots Down Channel Avenue Light

[DOT March Study]
After laying down yet another traffic study, The DOT shot down the community request for a traffic signal at Channel Avenue.

The study did not meet the federal warrant requirements.

Anthony Weiner: Green Streets Money Exists

Although Anthony Weiner talked heavily about Health Care and Immigration reform at the last property owners meeting it’s a little out of our scope and we won’t touch on those larger topics. You can watch the whole video here. However there are some topics which you need to know about!

The Green Streets money still exists! After the crash and burn death of the project, we were under the assumption that Anthony Weiner allocated the money elsewhere or NYC DOT stole allocated it elsewhere, but no we were wrong! Here’s the deal.

The Green Streets money was allocated toward Gerritsen Beach through our federal gas tax dollars through our congressman. DOT did try to steal use it for other purposes but the congressman took it off the table until Gerritsen Beach can find a use for it.

Councilman Lew Fidler asked a very direct question about the federal warrant guideline that DOT uses to continuously deny requests for a traffic signal at Channel Avenue.

Congressman Weiner did say that the issue with DOT it isn’t a money issue but an issue of DOT of understanding some streets don’t cross and pedestrians still need to be protected. The federal warrant is only a guideline however it is used by transportation commissioners around the country as the end all say all document. It basically says there needs to be a certain amount of traffic on streets that intersect to qualify for a signal. For us – the outgoing Channel Avenue traffic would have to be just as heavy as and the north and sound bound Gerritsen Avenue traffic.

Lew offered up the idea that he and all the other elected officials get together with the congressman and DOT to offer up some of the money to use for a traffic signal.

Although Congressman Weiner jokingly implied that our chances are slim unless we want to do anything with a bike lane he did say YES!

There may be hope yet for a traffic signal at Channel Avenue. A 40 year battle may be coming to an end.

DOT Lays Down a Traffic Study

If you have not already noticed DOT has laid down the strips they use for a traffic study approaching the Channel Avenue intersection.

This study was requested by Senator Goldens office along with the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association for a Traffic Signal at Channel Avenue.
