Memorial Halloween Makeover

The Francisco Solivan memorial which was erected after the motorcycle crash back in 2007, just got decorated in time for Halloween. The decorations come complete with ghosts and skeletons which seem mildly inappropriate.

Dumping & Squatters, Oh My! Everything About Lacon Court is Illegal!

DSC_0625

Currently EVERYTHING about Lacon Court is illegal and forming a dangerous situation.

Right now there are numerous people living squatting in dry-docked boats and house boats that are on the water.  They are running loud portable generators for the better part of the day and night. They are also not connected to any type of sewage or septic syetem. Instead, They have a port-a-potty that residents say they have witnessed them dumping on nearby ground to empty.

Residents are worried because the property “flat out filled with skel’s” with people walking in and out every day at every hour.

They also took down a large portion of the required construction fencing and dumped a very large amount of milled asphalt on the property where it could fall into the nearby creek.

Dumping all of solid waste on our community is disgusting and is a blatant disregard for the law. Criminal charges must be filed on the property owner(s) and whomever illegally dumped the material.

The Danza property is filled with vehicles, boats, and construction debris. The boats that Jemal was forced to remove now sit in the former danza property.

We have no idea who owns this property now, since Stephen Jemal was successfully sued by his orginal investment companies. He now owes 18.9 Million to his investment companies. We do suspect that SSJ Development still owns the properties.

Parks Clearing More Land…What to Do About The Concrete Blocks?

DSC_0437

Parks has been clearing the land across from the library for months now to make way for a huge forest. Recently parks has been bringing in the heavy machinery to clear more of the land.

They look like they are pushing around some of the larger cement debris aside – kinda like piling all of your stuff in a corner so it’s not seen.

How did all of those blocks and debris get back there anyway?

Wyld Chyld Tattoo Introduces Themselves. Ask Us Anything!

Fullscreen capture 1072010 93619 AM
Wyld Chyld Tattoo owner Bill DeLuso stopped by the property owners meeting to introduce themselves to the community and to answer any questions the community might have.

They have no problem answering any questions as they understand the perceived stigma associated with opening up a Tattoo shop. Mr. DeLuso, is no stranger to community opposition and has actually been a driving force in helping to help write tattoo and piercing laws in Flordia, Nassuau County and is currently working on New York City.

Wyld Chyld from what they explained and according to something called “The Google” is a high end establishment. They are nationally known, have been featured on TV shows, trade shows as well as having their own tv show currently.

They have already pledged to help out with fund raising locally with the Vollies and Kiddie Beach.

Any questions you have post them here!

Wyld Chyld Tattoo Opens on Gerritsen Avenue

DSC_0127
Wyld Chyld Tattoo, of Merrick Long Island, opened their second location this past weekend at 2606 Gerritsen Avenue.

Their Merrick store is part tattoo parlor, part coffee house. No word yet if the Gerritsen Beach location will be serving up coffee.

Owner Bill DeLuso in January told merrick.patch.com “I actually built it for the non-tattoo people. People who are curious about the tattoo industry, would never walk into a tattoo parlor…because you have no intention of getting one,” DeLuso says. “This gives you an opportunity to come into our world, see all the tattooing going on, talk to the artists.”

The tattoo shop is located at what used to be the short lived M & M Isurance, and if we go way back the former Brooklyn Public Library.

Everywhere You Look there are New Stores

There are lots of new stores popping up on the Avenue.

Let’s break them down.

DSC_0079

First we have Big Robs Heroes (2662 Gerritsen Avenue) which is closer to Devon Avenue. This place reminds us of of the failed Sammitch shop. We wish them luck!

Next door to Rob’s we have another place ready to open of what we are not sure of yet.

DSC_0089

Then we have the Channel Avenue Stores. The insurance place is gone and it is going to be a Tattoo parlor of sorts.

The former Barber Shop is up for rent and being gutted out.

Then we have the Corner of Everett and Gerritsen – which has been undergoing renovations. When asked about what this location would be. “Something that would help out the community and help pay the rent.” says Owner Joe Giordano. “Ssomething along the lines of a community music studio, party hall, or teen club”.

News 12: Another Report on 277

Apparently people in “Garraton Beach”(watch video) are fuming mad about the lack of crossing guards & “taking away a crossing guard is really just the icing on the cake”.

I do like how they were speeding on the avenue and standing in the middle of the street to get their shots.

Shoplifter in Liquor Store

shoplifter2enh

On Labor Day, we had a shoplifter in our store.  People have seen him around the neighborhood, even though he is not from GB and he has shopped in our store before.  I just want to get the word out so the people will be on the lookout for him and he doesn’t steal from anyone else.

News 12: Gerritsen Beach Angry that We Don’t Have Light Quick Enough

News 12 says that Gerritsen Beach is angry that we have not received the JUST announced traffic signal yet at Channel Avenue.

If News 12 wasn’t too busy stealing SheepsheadBites and GerritsenBeach.net stories maybe they would of reported the story correctly. They incorrectly reported that DOT should of had the traffic signal installed already on Channel Avenue.

In no way, shape, or form was a date given for the installation. Only that we have been approved.

Check out the report anyway. The best part is that they had a radar gun clocking people at 40 MPH and above in a school zone with a limit of 15.

Raccoon Tips

What to Know About Raccoons
The common name “raccoon” comes from an Indian word that means “he scratches with his hands.” The raccoon is easily identified by its black mask and ringed tail. Typically, adult raccoons are about 2 feet long and weigh between 10 and 30 pounds. Raccoons are able to adapt to a variety of habitats, and thrive in urban areas like New York City because of abundant food availability. As a result, it is not unusual to encounter raccoons near your home.

Getting Raccoons Off Your Property
When raccoons take up residency in your home, destroy your garden, or raid your garbage, they are either searching for food or a place to live. Raccoons are not picky eaters – they will eat anything from meat to vegetables to trash. Also, they are willing to live almost anywhere. Under ordinary conditions, they usually find a den in a hollow tree, but in urban areas, raccoons can live in rock piles, fireplace chimneys, hollow walls, attics, or beneath sewer drains.

Keeping Raccoons Out of Your Home
There are several ways to prevent raccoons from being pests without exterminating them. The best strategy is to prevent access to food. Raccoons tend to feed at night. If raccoons are stealing food from your pet’s dish, try feeding your pet during the day and bringing the bowl inside before dark. (Better yet, always feed your pet inside, which helps make your home less attractive to other animals, as well.)

If raccoons are rummaging through your garbage, make it unreachable by purchasing a raccoon-proof
garbage can, or by putting a weight on the lid so raccoons can’t open it. Always make sure that all
your garbage is in the can and not on the ground.

If raccoons are already living in your home, there are measures you can take to get them out.

Raccoons do not like bright lights or loud noises:

  • Put bright lights in your attic and if you have any kind of flashing lights, use them.
  • Put a radio in the attic and tune in to a rock or talk station, with the volume set as loud as you can stand it. Leave it on all day and night to disrupt the raccoon’s sleep.

If none of these suggestions work, trapping may be the best option. Never attempt to capture a raccoon by yourself!

If you try to touch a wild raccoon, it may feel threatened and bite you. If you are bitten or scratched by a raccoon, consult a physician right away. You may need a tetanus shot or other medical treatment to control infection. You should also be evaluated for possible exposure to rabies. Biting incidents should be reported to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene at 311. Check your local phone book or
veterinarian to find a professional trapper.

NY State will provide a list of wildlife trappers:
718-482-4885 NYS DEC.

Maintaining a Raccoon-Proof Home
When you think the raccoons have left, sprinkle Cayenne pepper around the area they entered
through (torn screens, open chimneys, or broken windows are the most common points of entry).

Be sure to leave a light and radio on until there is absolutely no sign of activity. Finally, permanently
seal all entrances. It will also help to prune back any tree branches that might have helped raccoons
gain access to the roof or attic.

Remember, raccoons will come back if you let them.

Allen Avenue Block Party Blocks Fane Court

41191_420798626723_641556723_4955726_7821663_n

Over the weekend was the Annual Allen Avenue Block party and it was a great success. Except for the residents of Fane Court.

According to Fane Court, They were not notified of this years block party in advance and found themselves blocked in by early morning.

In years past Fane Court, which does not participate in the Allen Avenue Block Party, was able to have access to Plumb 1st when they needed it.

This year when someone crossed over Allen Avenue onto Fane Court. People from Allen Avenue were upset at the driver and approached the driver. The altercation and yelling brought out everyone on Fane Court and a group argument ensued.

Allen Avenue’s argument was you can’t cross our block party we have a permit.
Fane Court’s argument was you blocked us in what else are we supposed to do.

The police did arrive to try and sort things out, but they only quoted the permit which authorized Allen Avenue being closed off as a block party. As of press time it is unknown whether all or parts of Allen Avenue were closed off.

In the end, Fane Court continued to drive to and from Plumb 1st when they needed it . While residents of Allen Avenue tried to block them with garbage cans and barricades.

Hopefully next year this can be resolved ahead of time and people can be nicer to their neighbors who are not participating in the festivities.

A Slow Day - Only Two Buses

It has to be said.

Garbage! Garbage! Garbage! Enough with the Garbage.

Despite artful messages the Gerritsen Avenue Soccer Fields are filthy! Why? Because our fields are growing more and more popular during the week with Day Care Camps. They come in by the busload and when they leave they don’t clean up after themselves!

These camps come in usually because Marine Park is filled and they come here to use our facilities.

Don’t get us wrong here we are all for having kids having fun but if they leave the place a mess it’s not worth it.

Who knows when Bergen Beach is coming back to clean it up!

Rain Floods Gerritsen and Channel Avenue

IMG_0528
We understand that this is just a puddle but it’s no ordinary puddle – It’s OUR HUGE puddle. Too big for what was a short period of rain.

It’s all due to a clogged storm drain at Channel Avenue.
