Coney Island Bound B, on existing CI Bound track, with makeshift platform extended.

The Kings Highway Station recently built a platform built making it super wide to accommodate the Coney Island and Manhattan bound trains. B express service has been suspended until at least 2011 until the construction is complete.

Here is what they plan on doing.

  • replacement and widening of station platforms
  • replacement of windscreens and canopies
  • construction of ADA-compliant elevators at the Kings Highway station
  • new station agent booths
  • restoration of the historic station house at the Avenue H station
  • creation of an additional southbound entrance at Avenue H
  • creation of additional fare entrances to the northbound platform areas of the Avenue J and Avenue M stations
  • upgrade of station lighting
  • enhancement of architectural treatments
  • installation of new public address systems.

The MTA has also closed the Coney Island bound Avenue H and Avenue M Q train stops. There are now 4 Coney Island bound Q train stops closed. Avenue U and Neck Rd. Avenue H and Avenue M.

Here is the MTA’s plan:

Phase 1 – Avenue U and Neck Rd construction

  • To Early 2010:  Coney Island-bound B Line Subway Link and Q Line Subway Link trains skip Avenue U and Neck Rd.
Customers who need to exit at Avenue U and Neck Rd should take the train to
Sheepshead Bay and transfer to a Manhattan-bound train.  The B3K shuttle bus
will operate along the B3 route to/from Kings Highway during evening rush hours.
  • Early 2010 to Early 2011:  Manhattan-bound B Line Subway Link and Q Line Subway Link trains make local stops between
Sheepshead Bay and Prospect Park, bypassing Neck Rd and Avenue U.  Customers at
Neck Rd and Avenue U should take the train to Sheepshead Bay and transfer to
    a Manhattan-bound train.
  • The B3K shuttle bus will operate along the B3 route to/from Kings Highway during morning
    rush hours.
  • Coney Island-bound B Line Subway Link and Q Line Subway Link trains make local stops.

Thanks to Joe S. for sending this in!

Beginning 5 AM Monday, Dec 8, 2008 the Coney Island Bound Avenue U and Neck Road stations will be closed to be completely rebuilt. This project is expected to run for one year.

The stations, both 100 years old have never had any comprehensive repair. The plan is to completely demolish and completely rebuild each station. Representatives from the MTA promised wider platforms, larger stairwells, more exits, newer windscreens that are easier to clean, and vision panels.

I guess this means we will all get home that much faster!

    • Use the Kings Highway or Sheepshead Bay (B) (Q) stations.
    • Use the Av U (F) station.
    • To travel from Av U and Neck Rd take a 57 St/7 Av bound (Q) train to Kings Highway and transfer to a Coney Island bound (Q) .
    • To travel to Av U and Neck Rd continue to Sheepshead Bay and transfer to a 57 St/7 Av bound (Q) train.
    • On weekday afternoons, please transfer to the B3K at the Kings Highway (B) (Q) station. The B3K will operate on weekdays only, from 2:50 PM to 7:45 PM, on Av U between Ocean Av and Gerritsen Av to/from the Kings Highway/East 16 St (B) (Q) station. The B3K will run every 10 minutes. Travel time is approximately 15 minutes in each direction. The regular fare is charged for the B3K bus.

Beware: “Don’t fall for it! This guy is a hack!”

Coming in via Email (Thanks Janelle!)

I know this site is geared more towards Gerritsen Beach but I figured a lot of people in other areas still read this site.

There’s a guy who considers himself handicapped, when he’s the farthest thing from it. He’s sometimes found by the Kings Hwy train station entrance (on the Rainbow side) in a red motorized wheelchair, begging for money with a cup on the arm rest. Unfortunatley, I don’t have a picture of him as of now, but I sure can describe him.

He’s got grey, thinning, wiry hair, a grey mustache and his face looks sunken in, especially near the eyes.

He lives around the corner from me and has absolutley NO problem walking. I actually saw him one day pulling the chair behind him, I guess because the battery may have died. If that’s not a hack move, then I don’t know what is.

He begs for money to support his drug habit. I am not even joking. He used to deal heroin to one of my neighbors and even had them shacked up in his apartment for a while.

IF YOU SEE THIS GUY- DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT GIVE HIM ANY MONEY!!!!

Kings Highway Station Fall Onto The Tracks

Stand clear of the platform edge and then some: A 14-year-old boy fell into the tracks at the Kings Highway subway station when the partial platform collapsed. Avi Katz was able to get away before the approaching Q train made it into the station.

Katz had been at the station around 6PM on January 29 and, per WABC 7, “stepped onto the edge of the platform to see if his train was coming.” The platform, made of wood, cracked and Katz fell three feet into the tracks. Katz, accompanied by his mother and Assemblyman Dov Hikind, spoke at a press conference, “I was laying on the tracks and I was really scared. My yarmulke fell off and I didn’t even care. I saw the train coming and all I could think was, ‘Get up, get up – this isn’t how I want to die.’”

Katz said it was hard for him to get up and after three attempts, he managed to get back to the platform. Though the MTA did patch up the platform, Hikind questioned the MTA’s commitment to maintenance; pointing to the decrepit conditions (per WCBS 2, “crumbling concrete, rotted wood, and burned-out lightbulbs”), he asked, “This is our transit system that we spend billions and billions of dollars for it to look like this, at one of the busiest transit stations?”

And right now, Katz is too scared to take the subway: “I just, every single time I see the train pass by I’m thinking about me on the tracks.”
