Ice Cream U Scream’s Open Mic Night aka Beach Stock was a great success.
The yearly event is a fundraiser for Kiddie Beach, and hopefully a way to get some kids off the streets for a night.

Cleanup organizer, Diane Sullivan, hopes Gerritsen residents will volunteer some of their valuable time to collect rubbish and help with maintenance. The event is being organised by the Gerrittsen Beach Property Owners Association. Every year this event, has seen dozens of volunteers and community group members do everything from garbage collection to painting. The off season drops a lot debris on Kiddie Beach, and this is a chance to remedy that. Organizers are hoping the number of volunteers donating their time this year will help make the 2011 Kidde Beach season a great success. The Gerrittsen Beach Property Owners is holding a Prize Bingo fundraiser for Kiddie Beach Saturday March 26th upstairs at the Knights of Columbus. Bingo night begins when the doors open at 7 p.m. Come one come all to Kiddie Beach for a night of Official Sponsored Rockband Night. For those that don’t know…Think of Rockband as karaoke but with an entire of your friends playing instruments! If you don’t have a large group you can still play! Anywhere from 1 to 4 can play. Lead guitar, bass guitar, drums and microphone. For you technical people out there we will be using: an Xbox 360, hundreds of DLC, The AC/DC Track Pack, All Lego Rockband songs. You may bring your own (non modded) instruments. Tournament Play & Free Play Kiddie Beach held it’s first ever Open Mic Night over the weekend. The event was organized by George and Patty Smyth of Ice Cream U Scream and Diane Sullivian of the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association. The event has been in the works for months and was in part designed to help curb local teen angst. “I think everyone should really appreciate all the work that George did. He really worked with the kids, let them rehearse in his basement and he even closed down the ice cream store on a Friday night in the summer to do it.” said Maureen LaPorte who’s son participated in the night. There was nothing but sun and smiles this weekend as Gerritsen Beach kicked Kiddie Beachs’ Opening Day Celebration The parade kicked off at Gerritsen and Whitney Avenues led by the Vollies, VWF Color Guard, Gerritsen Beach Community Marching Band, Stars Dancing Center, GBPOA, and lots of Gerritsen Beach beach goers in tow. The parade ended at the Lois Avenue entrance of Kiddie Beach. I would like to think that although we have many parades in Gerritsen Beach throughout the year, I consider this parade one of the best and that it is somewhat of a “sponge parade”. Meaning that although it it starts off with only few dozen people at the start by the time the parade hits Lois Avenue there are at least a few hundred people. This years honoree was Gerritsen Beach resident Caitlin Sarubbi – who notably competed this year in the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games. Also Kiddie Beach dedicated the children playground to Liam James Walsh who suddenly and unexpectedly passed away a few years ago at the age of 6. Like years past we took hundreds of pictures and if you need/want/desire a copy of pictures taken please email me at info@gerritsenbeach.net. Otherwise here is the Photo Galleries:
