Gerritsen Beach paid their respects to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 yesterday at Larry Veling Field. The memorial went well into the dark with everyone sharing stories, tears, and prayers.
The Brooklyn Cyclones hosted the Girl Scouts of America on June 27, 2008.
At this annual event, Girl Scouts troops were invited to march along the base lines and stand on the field during the National Anthem. The Cyclones took the game with a 4-3 walk-off win against the Aberdeen Iron Birds. As a nice surprise, Mets OF Ryan Church played for the Cyclones after beginning a rehab assignment the night before. The girls got autographs, received a Commemorative Patch and some even slept on the field at KeySpan Park for the Post-Game Sleepover.
If you missed out, there is another Girl Scout Night at the Richmond County Bank Ball Park when the Brooklyn Cyclones are facing the Staten Island Yankees on Saturday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m. Pre-game parade begins at 6 p.m. for all Girl Scouts, all kids 12 & under get to run the bases after the game & there will be a post-game SWAP will all scouts before the movie screening of Nancy Drew down on the field.
Gerritsen Beach has an 8 year celebrity! Hailey Scott, a Girl Scout Brownie, was featured on the Rachel Ray show on July 3rd and on the Next Food Network Star on July 5th.
She was partnered up with finalist Lisa Garza, and helped mix up a recipe for horseradish cream sauce. Hailey is one of the five NYC Girl Scouts chosen out of the many who auditioned for the coveted spot on the show.
In case you missed it, you can view the clip here: http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/segments/view/lisa-garza/
Opportunities abound in NYC, and we can encourage our daughters to be leaders just by giving them the variety that the Girl Scout Community brings. Hopefully Hailey has been inspired to become a cooking show host herself one day.

As almost all of the current residents of Gerritsen Beach are aware, there was a Pajama and Book Drive held in May. A large delivery of 187 sets of PJs & many boxes of gently used books was made to a Domestic Violence Family Residence Shelter in Brooklyn by Brittany, Theresa, Janice, Amber & Nick. They represented the Brownies, Juniors and students of P.S. 277, who teamed up to make this service project a community effort.
After marching in the Gerritsen Beach Memorial Day Parade on May 26th, they counted, packed, carted & carried all the donations that were made by the caring people of our neighborhood. The older Girl Scouts will be receiving the highest recognition given to Juniors, the Bronze Award for their commitment to completing all the prerequisites & carrying out the project. The work on this award consolidates the key program elements in Girl Scouting: helping others, improving your community & world and becoming the best you can be.
All contributions were thankfully received from the Director of the shelter, Ms. Peters. The partnership which was formed has been a motivation for the Scouts and members of our community to continue helping the families transition through their adversity with the assistance of the shelter.
On Saturday, May 17th, three Girl Scouts from Gerritsen Beach were honored by Andra Douglas, owner of the New York Shark’s women’s football team at Floyd Bennett Field, next to the Aviator Sports Complex. The girls were given youth sized footballs, they took photos with team members & got autographs signed at their after party. Although the Sharks lost that game to the Boston Militia, we are hoping they will win on June 7th when they play against D.C. Divas. The New York Sharks are dedicating this game as the Tri-State Area School Day. Visit their website www.nysharksfootball.com for information to participate for free.
Junior Girl Scout Troop # 2053 would like to thank all their customers who purchased Cookies from them this year. With the rebate money they earned, the girls decided to take a trip over to the Jamaica Bay Riding Academy to complete the requirements for their “Horse Fan” badge. All Girl Scouts & their families are invited to join us for Girl Scout Day at Astroland in Coney Island on June 28th. Look for the flyer or contact your Troop Leader for more information
