Parents Claim Victory Over DOE in Marine Park IS 278

Dont Dismiss Our Kids

HLA Protest 2009 - Which brings the score Marine Park: 2 DOE: 0

Wow!

Unofficial word is spreading that the parents, teachers, and Marine Park community have won yet another battle with the Department of Education. The DOE has pulled the idea of putting the New American Academy or any school in Marine Park IS 278 for the upcoming school year.

We are told, that persistent parent and community pressure as well as strong letters from Anthony Weiner, Marty Golden, Lew Fidler, Alan Maisel, was the tipping point for the decision, made by Chancellor Black.

As of right now there is nothing officially planned for the September school year, so stay tuned.

Anthony Weiner: Green Streets Money Exists

Although Anthony Weiner talked heavily about Health Care and Immigration reform at the last property owners meeting it’s a little out of our scope and we won’t touch on those larger topics. You can watch the whole video here. However there are some topics which you need to know about!

The Green Streets money still exists! After the crash and burn death of the project, we were under the assumption that Anthony Weiner allocated the money elsewhere or NYC DOT stole allocated it elsewhere, but no we were wrong! Here’s the deal.

The Green Streets money was allocated toward Gerritsen Beach through our federal gas tax dollars through our congressman. DOT did try to steal use it for other purposes but the congressman took it off the table until Gerritsen Beach can find a use for it.

Councilman Lew Fidler asked a very direct question about the federal warrant guideline that DOT uses to continuously deny requests for a traffic signal at Channel Avenue.

Congressman Weiner did say that the issue with DOT it isn’t a money issue but an issue of DOT of understanding some streets don’t cross and pedestrians still need to be protected. The federal warrant is only a guideline however it is used by transportation commissioners around the country as the end all say all document. It basically says there needs to be a certain amount of traffic on streets that intersect to qualify for a signal. For us – the outgoing Channel Avenue traffic would have to be just as heavy as and the north and sound bound Gerritsen Avenue traffic.

Lew offered up the idea that he and all the other elected officials get together with the congressman and DOT to offer up some of the money to use for a traffic signal.

Although Congressman Weiner jokingly implied that our chances are slim unless we want to do anything with a bike lane he did say YES!

There may be hope yet for a traffic signal at Channel Avenue. A 40 year battle may be coming to an end.

Anthony Weiner to Restart Belt Parkway Repair Discussion

The Sheepshead Plumb Beach Meeting was last night (4/6/2010) and Congressman Anthony Weiner was in attendance.

Congressman Wiener mainly spoke about the recently passed health care law and how it will effect everyone. We won’t be touching on the health care issue.

However he did heavily discuss the Belt Parkway erosion.

“Now about two feet and a bunch of sandbags are what separate the Atlantic Ocean at high tide in a storm from the Belt Parkway, and it’s gotten worse, not better.”

The whole story boils down to New York City repairing the Bike path first. Then the Army Core of Engineers can step in and partake in “a major piece of civil engineering”. The Army Core has offered to consult the city in it’s repairs.

The Congressman has also asked the governor to designate the belt parkway and parts of Queens, which suffered from serious damages from the March rainstorms, a disaster area. This will free up federal funds to repair the damage.

The Congressman promised to bring the City and Army Corp back to a active discussion to get something going.

Floyd Bennett Field to Get 2.4 Million

Rep. Anthony Weiner recently announced that he secured $2.4 million dollars to cleanup Floyd Bennett Field. The money will first be going to study the areas that have been closed to the public due to jet fuel pollution. Then the actual cleanup.

Floyd Bennett Field used to be a naval airfield and the city’s first commercial airport before JFK.

A National Parks Service investigation found that the fuel contamination has left amounts of benzene, naphthalene and other poisons and carcinogens in the soil.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the cleanup.
