Giant Hole Inside PS 277 Playground

DSC_0005

There is a giant hole right in the main pathway of Dr. Johns (PS 277) playground next to PS 277. The hole became evident weeks ago after the snow melted. A simple barricade was erected around it to keep the toddlers away. It’s been weeks since the barricade and now the hole seems to be growing and everyone is wondering when this will be repaired.

Letter to the Editor: Low Low Prices

We received this letter to the editor about Walmart:

To All,

First off, I want to express my gratitude to Dan for allowing me this opportunity to announce my grassroots campaign to bring Walmart to Gerritsen Beach/Sheepshead Bay area.  He does a lot of great things for the community I hope he keeps up the good work for years to come.  First off let me start by saying that we were all saddened by the announcement of the closing of Pathmark located on 3785 Nostrand Avenue, this closing will have a deep affect on the community with the loss of jobs and a place to shop.  I have read that officials from Representative Anthony Weiner’s office have sent out letters to Stop & Shop, White Rose, D’Agostino Supermarkets, Key Food, and Whole Foods to open another supermarket in this location.  However in these tough times, most of these stores listed probably do not have the capital to open a new store.  As you probably know already, Walmart is currently looking to open up in locations in New York City, I believe this location on Nostrand Avenue will be a perfect location for Walmart.  Walmart is the only company I believe has the capital to open up a new store in these tough times.  I believe Sheepshead/Gerritsen and the surrounding area needs Walmart, and Walmart needs Sheepshead/Gerritsen.

Area Code 929 to Begin April 16 2011

We are getting a new phone area code 929 . The addition of 929 will bring the number of New York City area codes to six (212, 646, 718, 917, 347 and 929).

There are 7.91 million phone numbers per area code.

The continuing exhaustion of phone numbers in the area led Neustar i.e., the coordinator of the North American Numbering Plan, to announce, and New York State’s Public Service Commission to approve, the overlay in January 2010. Area code 929 will be used for both landlines as well as mobile devices.

A spokesman for the North American Numbering Plan Association says that phone numbers are getting used up now that many parents give cell phones to every child.

You’re In My Spot – Neighbors Leaving Notes Everywhere

photo

A reader sent this in who received the above note on their car over the weekend.

“I don’t know who you are but I shoveled out this spot and Park here in Front of my house everyday. It’s not very nice that every times I move you park here. I am 7 months pregnant and have to walk two blocks in the Ice because your are in my spot.”

Miss you do not own a spot, you do not own the street. Just like I don’t own a spot in front of my house. That being said I feel for you, I also had to walk two block from my house. Just like everyone else in the city. My block has a lot of snow and a lot of “reserved parking” with cones. Then, when I went to park on Seba avenue I forgot that it is filled with mostly DIRTBAGS who are leaving chairs and garbage cans to protect “their spots”. Never-mind that they own multiple cars, never-mind that they are drunk a-holes, never-mind that would damage your car or my car in a second on a normal day for parking our cars there. Nevertheless I was forced to venture out and I parked on the street, which was kind enough to not have cones, which turned out to be in front of your house. I won’t get into the fact that we all have health problems and the fact that ice is dangerous no matter what age or status. However, if you were able to dig out, and you are comfortable enough to drive, I am sure you are healthy enough to walk two blocks.

Also it’s you’re not your.

This is one of many reports GerritsenBeach.net is getting about notes being left being left on cars.

According to NYC Traffic Law, Section 4-08 (7), it is unlawful for anyone to reserve a parking space. The law goes on to list every which way you can reserve a space – we will spare you – but it does say cones.

You can call 311 or fill out the online complaint form if you were so inclined.

Vollies Bill Gets Paid by Elected Officials

Vollies Bill

The Gerrittsen Beach Fire Department is going to have that $520 bill, paid by our elected officials.

The bill is going to be split three ways amongst Councilman Lew Fidler, Assemblyman Alan Maisel, and State Senator Marty Golden. However, at this time this same bill will come up next year if the city council does not exempt the Vollies from this tax. Paying this bill now is a short time fix.

As a long term fix, Councilman Fidler has introduced legislation to exempt the Vollies and similar organizations from this fee.

“Dibs” Revenge Over Parking Space

garbage pails 008

The other night in the early morning hours an older woman went to park on her block and found more than half of it reserved by objects. She decided to move one object so she could park on the block and found her tire flat the next day.

How neighborly.

According to an anonymous email, here is the story:

Here are some pictures of the garbage pails that are put out on a daily basis to save parking spaces for the residents of 18 Lois Avenue. I live on the other side of the street at (redacted). I never have moved any of the pails before to park. However Saturday evening I came home around 12:30am ALONE and was NOT going to park three blocks away when there were at least 4 spots in front of that house and then walk by myself home, so I moved one, only one of the 5 garbage pails that were out there and in the morning I came out and found my tire flat. Someone pulled the valve out. I thought the tire was slashed but it wasnt. The valve cap is missing and the valve was pulled out. I had an air pump in my car and that is what you see. It took me a good 45 minutes to fill my tire back up with air and fix the valve. Good thing I wasnt on my way to work that morning.

garbage pails 015

There seem to be more and more garbage cans, cones, buckets, etc ALL OVER Gerritsen Beach. Reserving parking spots all day and night. It gets ten times worse in snow which we totally understand why. When you’ve gone and spent hours getting your car out from a pile of dirty snow few things are as irritating as losing “your” spot and not being able to find another one.

If you couple the “dibs” mentality with that pesky Gerritsen Beach retaliation, you get a story this.

This woman is not the only person this has happened to. GerritsenBeach.net has gotten multiple emails and voice-mails of parking wars and notes being left on cars about parking in someones “spot”.

Why should people who live on their block not be able to find a spot when available? What about the people who don’t live here? Like our home health aids who take care of our elderly. What about contractors? Hell, what about family and friends? We can’t always assume that the people who are trying to park here actually live here.

What gives us the right to live by our own rules? Why do some think they can do whatever they want?

Call 311 to report cones on the street.

City Starts to Tax Gerrittsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department $500 a year.

Fullscreen capture 172011 111855 AM

The Gerrittsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department was recently surprised by $520 bill for inspection of the Blue Star Mothers Hall. The Blue Star Mothers Hall is where the “Volleys” hold most of their training for the community. In June 2009, the City Council enacted legislation as part of the Ficsal year 2010 budget package to amend the New York City Fire Code to limit the exemption from fees for Fire Department permits, inspections, and witnessing of required system performance tests. This “fee” has long been in place but many groups, including the Vollies, have always been exempted. The whole point of removing that exemption and assessing this fee, was to raise money to prevent the closure of any FDNY firehouses.

Our City Councilman Lew Fidler has said “To impose a fee that was intended to help keep firehouses open on Volunteer Firefighters is not only ironic, but wrong headed. Our community in particular knows the important work the Vollies do at no cost to the City. Putting unnecesary burdens on them that endanger their ability to continue is foolish.” The Councilman is going to introduce legislation that would exempt the Vollies, and similar volunteer services, from this fee in the future. They have submitted the paperwork to start the legislative process for it earlier this morning!

Effective June 29, 2009, Fire Code Section FC117.2.1 exempts from such fees only premises predominantly used by a religious or educational institution for the following purposes:

(1) A house of worship, or dwelling units for members of the clergy which are situated on or adjacent to the same premises as the house of worship; or
(2) A school accredited by the State of New York providing kindergarten through twelfth grade education.

City to Develop New “Four Sparrows Retail Center”

Toys R Us Flatbush New Neighbors - Click for LARGER

There is a new proposed project in and around Toys R Us on Flatbush Avenue called Four Sparrows Retail Center

A Public Scoping meeting for the Four Sparrows Retail Center Project will be held on January 11, 2011 at 7:00pm at the Kings Plaza Community Room.

The Project Planned:

The retail center (15 acres) will include the Toys ‘R’ Us currently there plus a building (two stories, 110k gross sq feet) to house the Kristal Auto Mall to the north of Toys ‘R’ Us and one or two buildings (one story if one building, and if two buildings then one of which would be one story and the other two stories) of multi-tenant retail space (127k to 138k gross sq feet, depending) to the south of Toys ‘R’ Us. There would be 820 accessory parking spaces.

The marsh parcel (46 acres), it seems, will mostly be left wild, although it will be mapped as parkland. They plan a nature trail, though the trail is both small (400 feet) and placed in only a corner of the marsh, on the far end of the retail center parking lot.

Project build year is 2014.

More information can be obtained at this site: http://www.nyc.gov/html/oec/html/ceqr/project_10dme005k.shtml

Some more detailed information:

The proposed project is comprised of two parts: a development parcel and lands to be preserved and mapped as City parkland. The development parcel totals about 15 acres and is proposed for a retail development that would total approximately 294,000 gross square feet (gsf). Adjacent to the development parcel, directly on the Mill Basin waterfront, is the existing Sea Travelers Marina. A relocated driveway and traffic signal would provide access to both the proposed development and the existing marina via a common access corridor. To the east and south of the development parcel is Four Sparrows Marsh. This is also Cityowned property. Containing large areas of tidal wetlands and coastal habitat, the marsh is an undeveloped natural area. However, it is not mapped parkland. Therefore, one of the proposed actions is to map this area as public parkland which would protect, in perpetuity, these tidal wetlands and coastal habitats as natural areas under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). The project area to be mapped as parkland totals about 46 acres. A public trail proposed as part of the development component of the project would provide waterfront access for passive recreation

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT PLAN
The proposed development parcel is approximately 15 acres of City-owned land. The site design principle for the proposed project is to create a functional, interconnected, and aesthetically appealing commercial retail center. There are three components to the retail center, which are:

  • A proposed auto-related commercial use referred to as the Kristal Auto Mall. To be located at the northern end of the development area, this proposed use would provide automobile sales, showroom, and service space in a two-story building with about 104,000 zoning square feet, with about 110,000 gross square feet. Also provided would be accessory parking for about 206 cars. This includes at-grade parking and rooftop parking. In addition to the proposed main building there would be a small accessory structure on the north side of the site. There would also be stormwater runoff and infrastructure improvements, as well as landscaping.
  • The existing Toys ‘R’ Us, which contains about 46,000 gross square feet, would remain on the site. No additions or expansions to this building are proposed, with the exception of facade refurbishing. Improvements on this parcel include landscaping and paving/circulation improvements to interconnect the three development parcels.
  • The proposed commercial retail complex on the south side of the development area would be the Four Sparrows Marsh Retail Center. There are two site plans under consideration that will be analyzed in the DEIS. Under one scenario, the proposed development concept calls for two commercial structures with a combined total building area of 137,967 gsf . The proposed development would include a one-story commercial retail structure (with about 40,176 gsf) along the Flatbush Avenue side of the lot and a two-story commercial retail structure (with about 97,791 gsf) to the rear of the lot set back further from Flatbush Avenue. The layout of this site plan and building design would allow for multiple tenants. The building heights would be 24 and 45 feet above grade, respectively up to 29 and 50 feet above grade, including rooftop mechanical space. Parking would be provided for 460 vehicles. This development would include the required finishes and landscaping in accordance with City zoning, including the planting of about 74 trees and space for about 32 bicycles. Under the second scenario, the proposed development concept calls for a single commercial structure with a total building area of 127,340 zsf.
  • This site plan and building design assume a single-tenant building. The building height would be 30 feet above grade up to 40 feet above grade, including rooftop mechanical space. Under this scenario, parking would be provided for 427 vehicles. This development would include the required finishes and landscaping in accordance with City zoning, including the planting of about 68 trees and space for about 24 bicycles. Under either development scenario, there would be a new curb cut and relocation of the existing signalized intersection at Flatbush Avenue (which provides access to the Toys ‘R’ Us site), The relocated intersection would provide controlled access to the main access corridor of the proposed development.

MulchFest this Weekend at Marine Park

Remember Xmas Tree Graveyard? Turns out there's mulching party in park today! (Tompkins Square Park, NYC 10-2pm)

Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city!

Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree.

Last year, close to 24,000 Christmas trees citywide were recycled.

This year, MulchFest will take place on January 8 and 9, 2011. Parks will host 35 chipping sites and 35 additional drop-off locations: 70 sites in all!

Please remember to remove all lights and ornaments before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Biodegradable bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home.

Marine Park will be operating Saturday and Sunday, January 8 and 9 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m.
