Parks was on site the other day at the Giant Hole Inside PS 277 Playground site and has determine that this is not a hole but a sinkhole caused by a broken pipe. According to a parks spokesperson they have gone in with the camera probe and found a broken pipe, possibly a sewer pipe, that will need to be repaired before the hole can be filled. “It is not a simple case of filling a pot hole, and will take some time”. They will have to open up the street and repair if that is the cause which will take time. Therefore, in response to the community’s concerns, they will put a temporary plywood cover on the hole itself in addition to the barricades currently around it. Updated with better pictures. There is a giant hole right in the main pathway of Dr. Johns (PS 277) playground next to PS 277. The hole became evident weeks ago after the snow melted. A simple barricade was erected around it to keep the toddlers away. It’s been weeks since the barricade and now the hole seems to be growing and everyone is wondering when this will be repaired. Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city! Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree. Last year, close to 24,000 Christmas trees citywide were recycled. This year, MulchFest will take place on January 8 and 9, 2011. Parks will host 35 chipping sites and 35 additional drop-off locations: 70 sites in all! Please remember to remove all lights and ornaments before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Biodegradable bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home. Marine Park will be operating Saturday and Sunday, January 8 and 9 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today urged New Yorkers to follow ice safety guidelines and exercise extreme caution in New York City’s parks. During the winter months, while ponds and lakes may appear frozen, venturing onto them is extremely dangerous and can cause potentially fatal accidents. Determining the strength of ice is extremely difficult, especially for an untrained individual. Ice must be at least six inches thick before it can maintain the weight of a person, and to freeze to the right thickness, the temperature must be well below freezing for weeks. Moreover, ice strength is affected by the depth of the water, the size of the water body, the water’s chemistry, the distribution of weight on the ice, and local climatic factors. To remind people of the dangers of thin ice, Parks & Recreation posts warning signs along the perimeter of the City’s lakes and ponds. Special ladders are also installed around the edges for trained personnel to use in the event of an emergency. Ice Safety Tips:
Dragonetti The Parks Department has been busy all week clearing the land across from the library for their new forest. Yesterday, they started to bring in trucks full of woodchips to act as the ground floor for their trees and shrubs. The planting event is set for Saturday, October 23rd 2010 Our Parks manager is working on getting a plan together to work with other city agency’s to remove any large debris that has formed over the years. Parks has been clearing the land across from the library for months now to make way for a huge forest. Recently parks has been bringing in the heavy machinery to clear more of the land. They look like they are pushing around some of the larger cement debris aside – kinda like piling all of your stuff in a corner so it’s not seen. How did all of those blocks and debris get back there anyway? “They have no guns and often encounter dangerous situations and are simply not given enough manpower and backup,” Local 983 VP Joe Puleo told the Daily News. The vines and weeds along the soccer field fence have gotten a bit out of control. At the most recent Property Owners meeting the vines and overgrown weeds on the soccer field fence were discussed with State Senator Marty Golden. The Senator intends to contact the Parks Department to clean up that area as soon as possible. Seba Avenue Skate Park is expanding again.Parks recently held a meeting at Councilman Lew Fidlers office with George Broadhead of the Property Owners and John Douglas of GBCares. They were invited to see the new plans and offer their input. We will be getting a new general asphalt field on the right side of the park more toward Lois. The new asphalt MAY end up being used for roller hockey WITH nets. That’s a huge maybe right now. This won’t be started until Spring of 2012. Here is where we are now. As for the existing Asphalt which is the middle ground for the Skate Park and Tot lot – that will be replaced with swings: 8 Child 8 Young 1 Handicap. Project completion date: Fall of 2012 GerritsenBeach.net Epic Time-line |
