There is a giant hole right in the main pathway of Dr. Johns (PS 277) playground next to PS 277. The hole became evident weeks ago after the snow melted. A simple barricade was erected around it to keep the toddlers away. It’s been weeks since the barricade and now the hole seems to be growing and everyone is wondering when this will be repaired.
Channel 11 WPIX picked up on the graffiti story. Although their headline suggests that the neighborhood is taking on graffiti vandals, there are no current plans for any official neighborhood watch program.
Overnight graffiti appeared up on homes and businesses all over New Section’s Bevy Court, Everrett and Devon Avenue’s. Graffiti has been popping up on Bus Shelters over the course of the last few weeks as well as smaller unnoticeable places. Now it seems like the perpetrator(s) went all out and cause a decent amount of damage.
“This is a disgrace and totally intolerable,” a neighbor who did want to be identified said by e-mail. “I want to perpetrators to go to jail. These kids needs to be stopped.”
We have been getting word of small groups of neighborhood kids calling themselves a few different gang related names (yes, seriously)trying to wreak havoc but this may be the damage of a single person.
Graffiti damages our property, and impacts our community. Help eliminate graffiti — report it immediately!
We have been getting reports of Graffiti and witnessing an incline in graffiti around since the holiday season. Graffiti damages property, and casts a bad light on our community. Don’t let vandals take control of theneighborhood. We encourage everyone to help combat this problem!
Within 24 hours of graffiti appearing:
Take a picture of the graffiti (send it to GerritsenBeach.net, email info@gerritsenbeach.net),
Report graffiti to the police at 311. Do not call 911! (there are city and police units dedicated to following up to these calls ), and
Clean it off or paint over it
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Remember, graffiti effects everyone!
Over the weekend the Department of Transportation placed new speeding signs in front of P.S. 277. The new signs explicitly spell out the new speed limit of 20MPH during arrival and dismissal times of 7-9am and 2-4pm.
Gerritsen and Channel is still scheduled to receive a flashing yellow traffic signal. There is no estimated date on installation.
The latest heavy snow claimed TWO boats on the canal and a portion of the dock it was attached. The two boats: Boats and Ho’s a 24 foot and an unnamed 34 foot keeled over under the weight of ice and snow.
The 34 foot boat boat went to the grave yard. The smaller is possibly salvageable. Although, there was some damage to the engine.
According to the Boat U.S. Marine Insurance claim files, for every boat that sinks underway, four boats sink in their slips. 32% of all boat sinkings come from Rain and Snow.
A reader sent this in who received the above note on their car over the weekend.
“I don’t know who you are but I shoveled out this spot and Park here in Front of my house everyday. It’s not very nice that every times I move you park here. I am 7 months pregnant and have to walk two blocks in the Ice because your are in my spot.”
Miss you do not own a spot, you do not own the street. Just like I don’t own a spot in front of my house. That being said I feel for you, I also had to walk two block from my house. Just like everyone else in the city. My block has a lot of snow and a lot of “reserved parking” with cones. Then, when I went to park on Seba avenue I forgot that it is filled with mostly DIRTBAGS who are leaving chairs and garbage cans to protect “their spots”. Never-mind that they own multiple cars, never-mind that they are drunk a-holes, never-mind that would damage your car or my car in a second on a normal day for parking our cars there. Nevertheless I was forced to venture out and I parked on the street, which was kind enough to not have cones, which turned out to be in front of your house. I won’t get into the fact that we all have health problems and the fact that ice is dangerous no matter what age or status. However, if you were able to dig out, and you are comfortable enough to drive, I am sure you are healthy enough to walk two blocks.
Also it’s you’re not your.
This is one of many reports GerritsenBeach.net is getting about notes being left being left on cars.
According to NYC Traffic Law, Section 4-08 (7), it is unlawful for anyone to reserve a parking space. The law goes on to list every which way you can reserve a space – we will spare you – but it does say cones.
We have received numerous reports that our local youth have been harassing the owner White Wave Laundromat (2690 Gerritsen Ave) on Gerritsen Avenue on a daily basis. This may have been due to the recent school week off but nevertheless the laundromat seems to be a timeless target for vandals. The vandals are closing the security gates (essentially locking everyone inside) and throwing objects into the store and at the owner. People are worried that this may be a potential hate crime in the making because the owner is a Chinese woman and the vandalism does not happen when others are manning the store.
Coming in Via E-Mail:
There’s a group out roudy kids… who are continuously throwing things, and close the metal gate down on the laundrymat on the ave. The owner is a nice chinese woman, and they do it because she gets crazy when they do this. They laugh at her for cursing etc. One day last week I chased them and grabbed a kid by his coat to try and make peace for her but he just coldly laughed at me and said she’s funny that’s why they do it. Its pretty close to a hate crime but not so…one day im affraid they’re going to break the glass. It happens atleast once a day. She put up surveilance but when she calls the cops they’re already gone and all the surveilance shows is the kids jackets. One day they threw a snow ball that was strong enough to dent her car.
We will post the surveillance video if/when it is available.
The Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department has been ready to handle any Gerritsen Beach emergency since the start of the blizzard.
The FDNY and EMS response times have been completely compromised during the blizzard. Any normal type of response to Gerritsen Beach would be difficult if not impossible. The Vollies have taken up that slack going on multiple emergency medical calls.
According to a follow up story from Courier Life, Lacon Court is still a mess.
Residents say the folks running the marina at Lacon Court in Gerritsen Beach are still illegally dumping fill and garbage on the filthy site — which the state ordered to be cleaned up by Nov. 6.
In fact, more than three weeks after the deadline to clean up the decrepit waterfront area passed, residents say the two lots along between Lacon Court and the Plumb Beach Channel are being used for more nefarious purposes.
