Despite the constant barrage of speculation with emails like “OMG!!1! THE AVE IS GETIN GREEN STREETS!” & “is the green streets comin tru?” NO this is not green streets.
The re-paving is going from the Point to Seba, and in front of 277.
If by some odd chance the DOT didn’t get the memo and we were all lied to, we should probably stage a small revolution (but only after they install “green streets” by 277 and the point.
If you don’t know what Green Streets was/is, it was a plan to place a small curb/sidewalk/something down the center of Gerritsen Avenue, with a little bit of green and to create more parking spots, obviously it was shot down.
Remember Good Ol’ Green Streets? It was that proposal to put a concrete “curb” down the center of Gerritsen Avenue, if you remember it failed…miserably, flames should of been involved to show how much the proposal failed.
These guys were using their jackets to catch the wind to sail down the avenue. It looked they were having fun, until they noticed me driving down the center at them with a camera pointed right at them.
Yes, green streets would of solved this problem, however, just in case you didn’t know, Green Streets is dead and its not coming back. With spring weather arriving, Seba avenue park is going to be packed, the avenue is going to be more crowded with children skating and on bikes.
I do have a solution, everyone needs to follow the speed limit! Wow what a concept, and its not even that hard to do! You can get to from the Point to Avenue W in 3 minutes 30 seconds doing 25 MPH. I have close to a dozen pictures of people passing me, some while people were standing on the median. One fatality and I see green streets back on the DOT table for resurrection and we wont have a say, it will just happen.
Is it worth it to park in the center of the avenue and blocking a turning lane to take a picture of your own parked truck? Maybe green streets is just park vehicles parked down the center of the avenue.
Unless the Department of Transportation is some sort of evil corporation and has a zombie formula that brings projects back to life, Green Streets is dead…again.
What killed the project this second time? It wasn’t any gunshots to the zombie head, it was a statement by John Quaglione the Press Secretary for Senator Marty Golden in response to “Are we Being Lied To?”
I wish to respond to the recent postings on this website, following a press story that has caused speculation among Gerritsen Beach residents, that the Greenstreets Project has not been officially been removed from consideration. I wish to inform you that this speculation is unwarranted and not true.
As the District Manager and Press Secretary for Senator Marty Golden, I wish to reiterate that from the very beginning of this project, Senator Golden and the other area elected officials have maintained that the community was to decide if this project was to happen. As a result of the meeting, Senator Golden and other elected officials, along with the Department of Transportation, have officially agreed to no longer consider this plan for Gerritsen Avenue.
I thought it was necessary to respond so that this message board can receive an official position from Senator Golden’s office and that the community can move ahead. Please be assured that Senator Golden is respectful of the wishes of the residents of Gerritsen Beach.
Thank you. If anyone has questions regarding this project, or any other matter requiring assistance, please contact Senator Golden’s office at 3610 Quentin Road or by calling at (718) 627-3659.
What do you think of all of this?

Just when we thought the Green Streets project was dead, turns out, it may never have actually died.
In the February 21st issue of the Bay News, a reporter from the newspaper asked the DOT about the project and the aftermath of the meeting. A DOT spokesperson said that “the project was still being discussed internally between local elected officials and the city” and that “everyone is going to take a second look at it.” Additionally, they stated that the meeting “alone did not kill it.”
Are we being lied to? Remember the rumors that the project was going to be forced on us? Now it might seem that way. Why even call a meeting with the community if DOT officials are going to talk about the issue amongst themselves, after the fact. It appears that, Marty Golden’s decision to “pull the plug” at the Green Streets meeting may not have been final.
Toward the end of the article Joe Maniscalco, who wrote the Bay News article, reported that the project being “dead may be premature”. Who reported that it was dead? I wonder? Maybe it was my devil of a post that was titled Green Streets Dead.
It also seems like he needed a filler for his article so he used my “after 30 minutes Marty killed green streets for the DOT” talking point. I’m all for sharing information when its sourced. I can safely say that he did not look at his watch when Marty Golden called the meeting. On the contrary, he looked at my post and/or my video and took my talking point.
I cite and source everything I get and use on this site. When I get no mention or people use my images without proper citation it annoys me. Oh and Joe nice zinger: “the senator had a devil of a time”. Really? Did He? Ugh.
Green Streets died tonight. It is now a dead issue. The community really came out in force against this proposal. P.S. 277 auditorium was standing room only.
This guy decided to bypass traffic on Gerritsen Avenue and drive on the sidewalk as if it were his own highway. Almost hitting a guy with a cane. He drove away very fast , maybe it was the guy taking pictures of him.
You always think about driving on the sidewalk, but you just don’t. Sidewalks are meant for people.
So I went to the property owners meeting, and unlike the 61st Precinct Meeting it wasn’t that boring. It was the exact opposite. The topics that were discussed were:
Bulkheads Project is going to start on the 25th
Crime Rate
Lacon Ct project and soil testing
Knapp and U Project for sidewalk permits
and of course Green Streets
Ah Green Streets, the project no one seems to want. Well this is the deal, there will be a meeting this upcoming Wednesday at PS 277. There will be some very important people there and the point of this meeting is to have them listen to the community. If there is disconcern and no one shows up they will assume that everyone is for it and the project will go forward. There will be time to review the plan at the school. There will be posters and a presentation explaining this.
The Property Owners and GB Cares both voted against such a proposal. Some of the interesting points of this plan raised at the meeting were:
Changing the Direction of Burnett
No Left from Avenue X to Avenue
Gotham and Florance to be both turned one way
and other street changes
Ive been told that adjustments can be made but it is my impression is that it is all or nothing with Marty Golden. Even more interesting, it is a becoming a hot political issue with local politicians. Marty is all by himself on this. Alan Maisel and Lew Fidler have not been invited to Marty’s meeting and express that if we don’t want it we shouldn’t get it. Is the invitation in the mail?
Also at the meeting they briefly murmured about notifying the community other than their usual methods but that conversation went away and no definitive action or stance was taken. One resident said that it is the Property Owners responsibility to notify the community because the flyer’s left in the stores, left on bus shelters, and ads in Our News, are not enough.
So come to this meeting and come with an open mind. If you don’t come and show up, this project will happen.
I was going to say be civil and calm about this, but if you are it wont be as interesting for me.
There is going to be a town hall meeting at PS 277 for the Green Streets. There will be representatives from the Department of Parks and also a representative from the Department of Transportation.
The Semi-New Problem on the Avenue
