Pastor Nebrasky Receiving Recognition Award from GBPOA - 2007
After 10 years as pastor and 20 years in the ministry, Pastor Nebrasky is leaving St. James.
Amidst the recent string of hardships facing religious institutions, St. James finds itself under financial stress. Nebrasky’s inability to work part-time has led to a mutual decision between her and the St. James council; for her to step aside.
“One of my fond memories was September 16, 2001, when former mayor Giuliani came down to St. James to give the bride away, as the bride’s brother (a firefighter) had died in action a year earlier… …it was a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony,” the pastor said. The wedding date was only five days after the World Trade Center attack.
“The journey has been wonderful,” said Nebrasky. She and her husband of 40 years, Ira, have been part of the community for nearly a decade. She currently holds a honorary Fire Chief position Department Chaplain position (alongside Pastor Farrell)with the Vollies and sits on the GB Fire Department Council. “The community really embraced us,” she added, being proud of her administration for reaching out and inviting the community groups to come and be part of the St. James family.
“She’s certainly been available to each and every organization,” commented George Broadhead of the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association. “You could always depend on her for our Veterans services, Memorial Day, Veterans Day. Personally, I like her very much. I am not sure if she is going to be moving away, but she surely will be missed.”
Her last day preaching at mass a worship service will be Sunday, January 23rd, at 11 AM, to be followed by a coffee hour reception in the basement of St. James.
“It’s hard to say we won’t be here anymore, but we look forward to see what God has in store for Gerritsen Beach and for [me].”
Update:for claritySt. James no longer requires a full time Pastor and Pastor Nebrasky would rather be involved with a full-time ministry.
Dear residents of gerritsen beach both near and far.
GerritsenBeach.net would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We had
an interesting year to say the least.
While all if not most of the beach has been plowed Canton Ct. between Cyrus and Seba Av has not been plowed because of this unregistered – no plate – range rover.
Coming in via email
This selfish car owner(who was part of your cone story) left his car there the night of the storm and walked home. Now he is not even home to move the car. No effort has been made. Now we are one of the only blocks that cant get plowed. We still have THREE feet of snow on the block! They did put a single Delaware plate on it yesterday maybe so it does not get towed. Multiple calls to 311 and to the 61 desk have gone answered
I hope everyone enjoys your Thanksgiving and a hopefully a little extra time off to spend with your family. Be sure to check the site next week for updates!!
Gerritsen Beach grappled with its latest controversy during last night’s Gerritsen Beach Property Owner’s Assocation meeting, as they tackled the Halloween “bombing” that saw violence and destruction spill through the community.
The solution put forward by most? Silence the blogger who put the nefarious youths in the spotlight.
On August 14, 1980, 43-year old Police Officer Harry R. Ryman was gunned down while in the process of stopping 3 men from stealing an automobile. Harry served both his Country and his City. He served 8 years in the U.S. Navy, and was a NYC Police Officer for 17 years. He received 17 medals throughout his career and was a member of the 60 Precinct Anti-Crime division at the time of his death. He left behind a wife and 5 children.
Harry’s strong love of family and community are the traits for which he is best remembered. He believed in education and continued his own studies at John Jay College.
The family of Police Officer Ryman has created a scholarship in his memory. This scholarship is for Police Officers and their dependents from the NYPD who will be attending an accredited university or college. The scholarship is funded by personal and private donations and various fund raising campaigns, which include the raffle of contributions donated from the generosity of individuals and local businesses.
The scholarships will be given out once a year on or about August 14. Donate Here
Dan’s 5k Fun Run in Gerritsen Beach, has grown to be a must to-do event for runners (and walkers) in our area. It has also become a great event for runners in the brooklyn area to participate in.
This year’s run will be in memory of Jerry Bradley and Reverand Father Marciano M. Caliwan. Jerry Bradley was a past coach for the GB Huskys in the 70′s. Father Marciano “Mark” was from resurrection.
All benefits will be donated to the Circle of Hope Cancer Foundation.
Dan Foster was diagnosed with rectal cancer a decade ago. His doctor, anticipating surgery, told him that dropping from 230 to 170 pounds would greatly assist his recovery. He lost the weight and, having experienced the fruits of exercise for the first time in his life, has since embarked on many long-distance fund-raising walks. In 1999, a recurrence of the cancer spread to his lungs, but he now has a clean bill of health. He organizes Dan’s 5K Fun Run for cancer charities from his home in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn.

Today there was an extended power outage in Gerritsen Beach. The Old Section was the last to come on after a few hours.
We would like to take this opportunity to explain what to do:
Power Problems? – What you should do when your power goes out. (Coned Flyer)
IF THERE IS A POWER OUTAGE:
First, check to see if a fuse is blown or a circuit breaker has been tripped.
Call your power provider immediately to report the outage.
Con Edison 24-hour hotline: 1-800-75-CONED (752-6633)
You can also report an outage on-line on ConEd’s website.
National Grid 24-hour hotline: 1-718-643-4050
Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) 24-hour hotline: 1-800-490-0025
Disconnect or turn off all appliances that will go on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, they may overload electrical circuits.
In order to prevent food spoilage, keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Move milk, cheese, meats, and other perishables into the freezer compartment. If the freezer is only partially full, keep all items close together and stacked on top of each other.
Stay indoors if possible. If you must go outside, stay away from downed and dangling power lines.
If power will be out for an extended amount of time, consider going to a shelter, hotel or friend or relative’s home that has power. However, ONLY do so when authorities say it is safe to travel (i.e. in the case of a storm).
Check on people with special needs.
While prolonged power disruptions occur infrequently, it’s always a good idea to be prepared. In addition to the items you keep in your Emergency Supply Kit, consider storing a battery-operated lantern and freezer packs to help keep food cold during a power outage. See Food Supply Preparation for more information about preparing your food supply for an emergency.
Power Conservation Tips:
During periods of intense electrical usage, such as on hot, humid days, it is important to conserve as much energy as possible to avoid brownouts and other electrical disruptions.
Set your air conditioner thermostat no lower than 78 degrees — a 75-degree setting uses 18 percent more electricity and a 72-degree setting uses 39 percent more electricity. This setting allows for sufficient cooling while still conserving electric power.
Only use an air conditioner when you are home. If you want to cool your room down before you arrive home, set a timer to have it switch on no more than one-half hour before you arrive
Turn off all nonessential appliances.
Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms.
Only use appliances that have heavy electrical loads (dishwashers, washers, dryers) early in the morning or very late at night.
The MTA cuts are happening Monday, and we are losing the overnight B31 and Marine Park is losing the B2. Yesterday the bus that I got on had every seat covered with a flyer to call the MTA CEO and demand a stop to the cuts. The flyer was sponsored by the TWU.
