Letter to the Editor: Not the Average Comment

We received this letter to the editor and we feel as though it should be posted for all to read and discuss.

Earnest Lee Saddened
Wouldn’t you like to know the Court I live on,
Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn

Cute name huh? Not as clever as Maury Povich or anonymous1, but like most sane people, I want my nights filled with calm serenity, not antagonized by a band of minor malignancies tearing at the outer shell of my hard earned life for the ego boost they must desperately need. I hope I can rouse some real concern in my neighbors that will bring more attention to the “I’m a GB lifer” parental failures and their loser spawn. Yet the spawn are committing only misdemeanor crime so they can stay the angels of GB since Mom and Dad may not bail them out, on the rare chance they are arrested. Tough to raise a scofflaw renegade snotnose, might miss a Jerry Jerry Jerry thrill! A few may pump gas or even work civil service to keep a roof for mom. That’s a “good” boy, just misunderstood and frustrated, but “brave and self-reliant”. Lesser evils to cover the basics with a justification icing on top.

Disgraceful Graffiti Attack on Gerritsen Beach

172032_10150095633773865_560998864_6007222_3289068_o

Overnight graffiti appeared up on homes and businesses all over New Section’s Bevy Court, Everrett and Devon Avenue’s. Graffiti has been popping up on Bus Shelters over the course of the last few weeks as well as smaller unnoticeable places. Now it seems like the perpetrator(s) went all out and cause a decent amount of damage.

“This is a disgrace and totally intolerable,” a neighbor who did want to be identified said by e-mail. “I want to perpetrators to go to jail. These kids needs to be stopped.”

We have been getting word of small groups of neighborhood kids calling themselves a few different gang related names (yes, seriously)trying to wreak havoc but this may be the damage of a single person.

Graffiti damages our property, and impacts our community. Help eliminate graffiti — report it immediately!

We have been getting reports of Graffiti and witnessing  an incline in graffiti around since the holiday season. Graffiti damages property, and casts a bad light on our community. Don’t let vandals take control of theneighborhood. We encourage everyone to help combat this problem!

Within 24 hours of graffiti appearing:

  1. Take a picture of the graffiti
(send it to GerritsenBeach.net, email info@gerritsenbeach.net),
  2. Report graffiti to the police at 311. Do not call 911!
(there are city and police units dedicated to following up to these calls ), and
  3. Clean it off or paint over it

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Remember, graffiti effects everyone!

Nostrand Pathmark to Close

l

Troubled supermarket giant A&P, which filed for bankruptcy protection late last year, will close 32 stores, including four in the New York City area, union officials have been told.

Brouogh President Marty Markowitz sent us this letter:

The loss of a supermarket in Brooklyn, particularly when so many of our neighborhoods are lacking quality food at affordable prices, is not only a major quality of life issue but a public health issue. When supermarkets close, our residents—especially seniors—are forced to travel greater distances, often at greater expense, to provide for basic needs for themselves and their families. The preservation and creation of supermarkets has been, and continues to be, a top priority of my office, and it has been my ULURP policy to seek the inclusion of supermarkets as part of my discretionary land use review where deemed appropriate, as in the Shops at Gateway, Gateway Estates and Coney Island, to name a few. While I am disappointed the Pathmark on Nostrand Avenue will be closing, I am interested in working with the property owner and other stakeholders to identify a supermarket retailer to replace Pathmark and provide the residents of Sheepshead Bay and surrounding communities with the access to the fresh food they deserve.

Always a Long Line at Pathmark! Must of been popular.

WPIX: Snow Parking War

Channel 11 WPIX, which apparently has no shame getting leads from us at this point, chimes in on the parking war in Gerritsen Beach.

Reserved

I hope no one has family, friends, or an elderly relative with a home health aid – there will be no parking.

These pictures were collected in about 15 minutes of driving along. There were even cones on Gerritsen Avenue!

Pastor Nebrasky to Leave St. James

DSC_5492

Pastor Nebrasky Receiving Recognition Award from GBPOA - 2007

After 10 years as pastor and 20 years in the ministry, Pastor Nebrasky is leaving St. James.

Amidst the recent string of hardships facing religious institutions, St. James finds itself under financial stress. Nebrasky’s inability to work part-time has led to a mutual decision between her and the St. James council; for her to step aside.

“One of my fond memories was September 16, 2001, when former mayor Giuliani came down to St. James to give the bride away, as the bride’s brother (a firefighter) had died in action a year earlier… …it was a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony,” the pastor said. The wedding date was only five days after the World Trade Center attack.

“The journey has been wonderful,” said Nebrasky. She and her husband of 40 years, Ira, have been part of the community for nearly a decade. She currently holds a honorary Fire Chief position Department Chaplain position (alongside Pastor Farrell)with the Vollies and sits on the GB Fire Department Council. “The community really embraced us,” she added, being proud of her administration for reaching out and inviting the community groups to come and be part of the St. James family.

“She’s certainly been available to each and every organization,” commented George Broadhead of the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association. “You could always depend on her for our Veterans services, Memorial Day, Veterans Day. Personally, I like her very much. I am not sure if she is going to be moving away, but she surely will be missed.”

Her last day preaching at mass a worship service will be Sunday, January 23rd, at 11 AM, to be followed by a coffee hour reception in the basement of St. James.

“It’s hard to say we won’t be here anymore, but we look forward to see what God has in store for Gerritsen Beach and for [me].”

Update: for clarity St. James no longer requires a full time Pastor and Pastor Nebrasky would rather be involved with a full-time ministry.

Happy New Year

Dear residents of gerritsen beach both near and far.

Five Days Later: This Guy

While all if not most of the beach has been plowed Canton Ct. between Cyrus and Seba Av has not been plowed because of this unregistered – no plate – range rover.

Coming in via email

This selfish car owner(who was part of your cone story) left his car there the night of the storm and walked home. Now he is not even home to move the car. No effort has been made. Now we are one of the only blocks that cant get plowed. We still have THREE feet of snow on the block! They did put a single Delaware plate on it yesterday maybe so it does not get towed. Multiple calls to 311 and to the 61 desk have gone answered
