Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) is announcing plans to host his annual “Support Our Troops” rally on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Marine Park, at Avenue S and East 33rd Street.
Residents of the community are invited to join with veterans and family members of active servicemen and women in sending a message of support to our troops both home and overseas. The event will feature inspirational speeches and a patriotic musical selection. American flags will be distributed to all those in attendance.
Senator Golden stated, “I wholeheartedly offer my continuing gratitude to our service men and women. We must continue to gather as a community so to recognize the sacrifices that have been made in the name of freedom and liberty.”

Local businesses will be this years honorees. Every year, Kiddie Beach likes to honor people that exemplify our community spirit. This year some local businesses will be receiving a much deserved thank you.
Although there was an early morning rain there wasn’t a cloud in sight at the start of the VFW 107 annual Memorial Day Parade.
The parade was filled with patriotic music provided by the Gerritsen Beach Marching Band and was followed by VFW Color Guard, Cort Club, Property Owners, Resurrection Sports, Gerritsen Beach Little League, and the Volleys. The parade made three stops for brief ceremonies. Burnett Street & Whitney, St. James and at the Knights of Columbus at Cyrus.
The Argonne Marine Park Post No 107 VFW will host a ceremony and parade observing Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the VFW at Gerritsen and Whitney Avenues. The parade will proceed along Whitney Avenue to Burnett Street then down Gerritsen Avenue. Ceremonies will be held at Burnett Street & Whitney, St. James and at the KofC at Cyrus.
The New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life. Their meritorious service to our nation deserves the special recognition that only a Hall of Fame can provide, as a fitting expression of our gratitude and admiration.
This year Corporal George Broadhead, President of the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners was inducted into the Hall of Fame who Senator Golden selected for induction into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame this year. Corporal Broadhead, of Gerritsen Beach, served during the Korean War. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Naval Unit Citation and campaign awards.

The Curtiss Pusher, built and flown by former naval aviator Bob Coolbaugh and his crew of aviation volunteers, is making its way across the country this year at various events. This provides audiences with the opportunity to see the flying replica of the biplane that established naval aviation on Jan. 18, 1911 with the successful landing on the deck of the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania.

In addition to the free refreshments and lunch, The senior fair offerd information and assistance offered by various City agencies including the Department for the Aging, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Finance, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Sanitation, New York and Company, the New York City Police Department and New York City Fire Department..

Three weeks after burglars stole a safe containing $12,000 in donations, the Knights of Columbus has bounced back raising $21,000 from the Annual Raymond A. Loughran Pool Tournament.
People either paid to play in the tournament, bought raffles for bikes, autographed sports jerseys and sporting equipment or came in, had a drink, and left some money in a donation plate, said Knights of Columbus member Mel Hidalgo.

This weekend is the final weekend in the Knights of Columbus Raymond A. Loughran pool tournmant benefiting cystic fibrosis. The community has really come through for this fundraiser, donating back to the level that was stolen within the first weekend of the tournmant.
Knights of Columbus member Mel Hidalgo told Courier Life that the Knights of Columbus collected more than $8,000 by April 9. “A lot of people showed up. Usually we get between 30 to 35 people, but this time we had 44 players. A lot of other people came, but they didn’t want to play pool. They just showed up with donations.”
