Brooklyn Ballgame Raises Thousands for Breast Cancer

08 Softball_flyer

The Annual Timmy “Tub” Girardot Pagans /Women’s Softball Game is a neighborhood tradition in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn for good reason. The game, now in its fourth year, has raised a total of $15,000 for the American Cancer Society. Each year the proceeds are brought to the Prospect Park Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk by a group of Gerritsen Beach residents registered as Team Hope. Last year’s game raised $8,000, making Team Hope the only non-commercial group on the American Cancer Society’s list of top ten Brooklyn fundraisers. The success is an example of how one small Brooklyn Community can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

On Saturday, September 27, 2008 the Gerritsen Beach community will gather at Larry Veiling Field on Gerritsen Avenue to enjoy the game and festivities. The event is free of charge and funds are raised by selling raffles, chances, food and beverages. You can expect to find hotdogs, hamburgers, barbecued chicken and hot or sweet Italian sausages for a suggested donation of $1-2. Local vendors like the Knights of Columbus and the Cort Club donate food and supplies, and everyone takes turns flipping burgers behind the grill.

When breast cancer survivor Jinny LeDonne Hanson mentioned the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to her softball coach, Ernie Blundell, the idea for a fundraiser was born. The Annual Timmy “Tub” Girardot Pagans/Women’s Softball Game, named in remembrance of a beloved friend, would feature the local men’s team, The Pagans, playing against the Women’s Softball league. Last year’s game drew a huge crowd including representatives from the American Cancer Society and local assemblyman Alan Meisel. This year’s game will be more successful and - if possible - more fun.

Team Hope leader Jinny Hanson was recognized by the American Cancer Society for the fundraising efforts of the Gerritsen Beach community and was awarded a proclamation from the New York City Council in a ceremony at City Hall in 2006.

Dans 5k Fun Run

This years fun run is dedicated to the loving memory of Marlita Mattaliano and Francis T. Walsh

The race started at Gerritsen and Devon, ran along Burnett street, ran through the nature trail behind the nature center then back to the Cort Club.

The southern Brooklyn Fun Run is an idea of Dan Foster to bring people together to support cancer awareness. Dan has been an active crusader to support cancer awareness for over 10 years. His activities have helped raise thousands of dollars for various charities that work with improving the care and information for those affected by cancer. Through his activities Dan has touched the lives of thousands of different people that share the same life altering experience with them and their families.

Gerritsen Beach 9-11 Memorial

DSC_5743

Thursday, September 11th

The Knights of Columbus held their annual memorial service for the lives that were lost on September 11th 2001.

There was memorial songs, poems read, prayers from Resurrection and St. James.

I have video I will upload it later. Check back.

The younger than 13 crowd that was there I guess don’t realize what happened that day or don’t know how it effected everyone older than them because they were a bit noisy and playful when they shouldn’t have been. It might be because they have absolutely no memory of that day at all; the smell, the crystal clear sky, the smoke cloud over us, the papers flying around, the buildings collapsing, jet fighters.

Bikers Complain about Parking Everywhere During Duck Curry Competition

IMG00156

This came in via E-Mail:

My wife and I were riding bicycles in the late afternoon along Belt Parkway last Saturday. As we approached exit 13, we saw lots of cars parked on either side of the bike path. We were not sure what the deal was, and there were lots of people in the area near Floyd Bennett. As we rode back cars were backing up and existing right from the bike path. As you can imagine from the pictures attached, it was quite dangerous and awful for the bicycle riders like us. We did see a few of these vehicles being ticketed, but the number of cars seen within that area was unbelievable.

After some quick research I found videos and pictures of an event last Saturday at Floyd Bennett Field called “Duck Curry Competition 2008″.

IMG00161

From the pictures and video it seemed like a great event, but I’m not going to be talking about the event. This is about people parking on the bike path and causing a dangerous situation

More than likely there was plenty of parking inside Floyd Bennett Field for the event but we as people are lazy and didn’t want to drive all the way around for the event.

2008 Canal Party!

DSC_3048

The Canal Party is the most unique in block party in Brooklyn!

The canal party is a private event on the Gerritsen Beach Canal, which started in 1998. All residents on the canal are encouraged to have their own private party with family and friends in their back yards.

There was a swimming race, water tube races, and a New Section vs Old Section tug of war, which the old section continues to dominate.

The Tug of War was by far the best event of the day. However, it didn’t seem fair to the new section because there were about 55 people for the old section and about 25 for the new section.

The new section will continue to fail if they don’t come together to win. I don’t think its possible for the new section to ever beat the old section, the old section is better at everything. It might be that everyone’s house in the old section is closer so we know each other better, in the new section you people are too spread apart!

DSC_4195

The entire team at Gerritsenbeach.net was there to partake in the event. We all had a great time and would like to thank everyone who organized and volunteered including

Mike Taylor, Dave Stevens, Joan Bostwick, Mary Jean & Robert Kralick, Dave Reynolds, NYKids Time for the cartoon characters, Richie Bowers as Uncle Sam, and all of the other volunteers and their families who helped during the day.

I know there are a ton of more people to thank but I don’t know who they are at the moment.

Next time I go to the canal party I have to make sure the Gerritsenbeach.net team goes home on time we don’t remember what time we home.
