The lot which is currently on sale for $9 million, is currently undergoing bulkhead repairs. This is not the city repairing the bulkhead as some may have first thought, but the property owner. They have also repaired the entire sidewalk on Knapp Street adjacent to their property

GBCares Container Burglary

Tools being used by Gerritsen Beach Cares volunteers and staff have been stolen from their containers.
The equipment stolen includes: Weed Wackers, a speaker system, other maintenance tools..etc. Totaling a few thousand dollars.
If anyone knows where these tools are or who actually perpetuated the crime please call the 63rd Precinct as soon as possible.
If you can volunteer or can donate new ones, call GBCares at 718-648-3745.
You could always call GBCares if you know who stole these items, so they could be beaten talked to.
How NOT to Dump Your Construction Garbage
Usually when you do any construction… you usually get a dumpster but hey! why get one of those pesky things when you can just dump right into the creek?
Hell most of the bulkheads are falling apart right? What your doing is saving the street?
Well WRONG. Although its not one of the new ones put in, that bulkhead is in decent shape and the cement actually does massive amounts of damage to the water.
Thanks.
White Island Meeting Thursday at Cort Club
Alan Maisels office in conjunction with GBCares is holding a meeting (which anyone can attend) this Thursday 7pm at the Cort Club to discuss White Island.
They will be discussing the results of a NYC Parks report analyzing the pollution that is seeping from the original seal of white island.
Residents are concerned about the new project specifically the new recapping the island that will add additional pressure to the waste.
A Bridge Built to White Island

Its been a little while since we last checked in with white island. More or less the parks department is capping the island with sand.
What is being put there now is a temporary utility bridge so they are able to transport whatever they transport to and from Mau Mau.
Hopefully someone will send in some close up pictures or offer GerritsenBeach.net a ride
Local Waters Closed Due to Sewage Spill
Via NY Daily News
Coney Island and Manhattan Beaches were closed yesterday after a raw sewage overflow from a local treatment plant. One man was even arrested then cited for disobeying the order to stay out of the water.
Until further notice, swimming is not permitted at Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Kiddie Beach and Kingsborough/Seagate Beach
The beaches will be tested daily to determine when they will be reopened.
Environmental Taskforce Operations at Lacon Court
For those that don’t know about what’s going on at Lacon Court at the end of Devon and Everette Avenues here is a quick recap.
What used to be danazs and the boat yard are gone, they are empty lots. They were purchased byStephen Jemal former owner of the the wiz. He is now a brooklyn waterfront land developer. He has bought up numerous waterfront properties all over south Brooklyn. He plans to develop his Knapp street and Lacon court property into luxury condos. He also just so happen to threaten to sue GerritsenBeach.net
Recently Jemal was ordered by the DEC to remove any docks, debris, or anything that will become a water hazard in front of his Lacon Court property. Keep this in mind.
There is now an organization called Environmental Taskforce Operations (ETO) that is run by Greg Moss, Perry Papadoupoulos, and Bill Dumphy. You can read more about them on their website (http://taskforceoperations.org/)
ETO has reached a lease agreement with Stephen Jemal to occupy the Lacon Court property for two years rent free. In exchange ETO will clean up & maintain all four of the Jemal properties (two outside GB).They will also be taking over communications with the DEC. They will remove any boat, dock, debris in the creek to come into compliance with the recent DEC order . It should be known that ETO will not be doing any construction on the properties this is just clean-up and maintenance.
They are also operating a surveillance program in the creek so if you own a boat or enter the creek you are more than likely being watched and recorded day and night. The goal of this operation is to see who is scuttling the boats in the creek.
So there you have it. ETO is our new neighbor, for at least the next two years, they are watching boat traffic, maintaining the property, all for our good friend Stephen Jemal.
Another Gun Recovered in the Creek
Since the Hi-Point Carbine rifle that was found on the Beach at Garland and Allen a week or so ago, another gun was recovered in the creek Wednesday.
This time a silver 9mm was recovered during low tide near the point.
AK-47 Found on the Beach at Garland and Allen
|
A real, unloaded, seaweed covered, AK-47 washed up on the shore of Garland Court and Allen Avenues. It was spotted then called in by the kids who play on that block.
The precinct responded to the situation and once it was determined that it was real the Emergency Service unit responded to handle the weapon.
As Summer Approaches, Battle Between Photographers and Jet Skiers Heats Up on Creek
|
For those that done know, Gerritsen Creek is a no wake zone which prohibits Jetskiing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding in the area. Basically no anything of any kind.
This is meant to protect the wildlife (and plant life) here including the migratory and local birds, terrapins and fish. Consequently because of the wildlife there are also a good amount of photographers in the area that are shooting wildlife and love to post pictures of the no wake zone offenders.
The photographers know that there are limited resources to police the area and feel that taking pictures of the offenders is there only recourse.
This happened last summer as well with Salt Marsh Hall of Shameand Salt Marsh Hall of Shame Continues.
Photographer VictorSiegfried of our forum posted a handful of photographers of recent offenders. Which I could only assume is the first batch.
He stated that he brought the attention to the local park rangers and was told that there is currently a plan to stop all these activities for good with the help of the US Coast Guards and NYPD harbor patrol.
Here are some of his pictures: Check out the rest of the pictures on the forum.

[[Fema Flood Insurance Rate Map ]]
We received another email regarding an insurance company dropping a Gerritsen Beach resident.
Coming in via E-Mail:
I just got a notice from Allstate Insurance stating they will not be renewing my homeowners insurance when it is up in April. They claim that they are dropping all Gerritsen Beach customers when their next renewals are up. Allstate feels that since we are in a “coastal” area, we are a risk and they have to limit their risks. I am really angry. I have paid them for 9 years and now they are leaving me in the lurch. Made two calls today one quote was $800 more and the other $500. This is an outrage. I have been told that we have no recourse since the insurance company can drop with 45-90 days notice. If anyone has Allstate, start shopping!
Just in case you didn’t know we live in a flood zone. Being prepared for a flood might be the the most important thing we have to worry about. Things like having a “go bag”, batteries, canned food, cash, medicine, but you should be also adding home flood insurance to your list.
Now we all know that Allstate and other agencies has been dropping area residents like we have the plague, but it is still possible to get flood insurance.
Check out this list of insurers from FloodSmart.gov. Make sure you also go through that site with a fine tooth comb. It has lots of very relevant information.

- Insure the full value of your home.
- Remember to separately insure the contents of your home;
- When filing a claim, don’t sign any documents that you don’t understand.
Consider yourself lucky if you never need to use your insurance; or, as the Today Show put it: “Purchasing flood insurance can be a roll of the dice, but it may just be worth investigating.”
