Holiday Lights Taken Down on Gerritsen Avenue

I guess this means that the holiday season is actually over. It was a great sight to see every night on the Avenue and Thanks to everyone that made these lights possible.

Did you take down your tree yet? I dont, I keep mine up all year and celebrate Christmas everyday. kinda like a Christmas version of Groundhogs day.

If you liked the Christmas lights this holiday season you better thank the people that helped put them up and take them down.

A Christmas for the Dogs

Bargain Bow Wow(2754 Gerritsen Ave), which replaced the hardware store a few years back held a one of a kind event over the weekend.

They asked Santa to take time out of his busy schedule and take pictures with their customers, the Dogs!

From 12-3 pm it was non stop dogs. Dogs came by walking in from every direction, they were even pulling up in cars. I was thinking about hitchcock’s The Birds with all the dogs around Bargain Bow Wow

Tis’ The Season Kings Highway BID Edition

The Kings Highway Business Improvement District was establish in 1990 to enhance business on one of Brooklyn’s most dynamic outdoor retail corridors. Long known as a great place to shop, the area that the Kings Highway Business Improvement District encompasses stretches from Ocean Avenue on the east to Ocean Parkway on the west and two short blocks on Quentin Road.

St. James Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

The Photo Gallery

Because the AOH sold the property that contained the traditional Christmas tree, this year’s tree lighting ceremony was held at St. James on Saturday, December 8. It was also moved to 4 pm because no one was sure about what time the new solar-powered Christmas lights would go on.

The Property Owners asked Pastor Nebrasky if they could use St James as the location for this year’s ceremony. St. James and the pastor were more than happy to allow the community to use the yard. However, since the AOH display was elaborate and involved many lights, there was a concern that the electricity load would be too much because of the age of the church.

The Property Owners found a solution to the problem: solar-powered Christmas lights. They bought 6 strands of multi-colored 100 LED at $80 each.

On Saturday a group of volunteers helped to put up the lights and sponsor wreaths. Jane O’Flaherty, Donna Davis Cathy & Terrence Shea, Bob Banham, Janet Behrens, Danny Smith, and Kevin Howard were among the volunteers.

At the ceremony Lilybeth’s Little Big Players sang Christmas songs and the Gerritsen Beach marching band played some songs as well. Lew Fidler, Marty Golden, and Alan Maisel were all there to wish Gerritsen Beach a happy holiday and then went downstairs in the church to have some hot chocolate to warm up from the cold.

It was a good family fun ceremony…

Tis’ the Season - Help us out edition

For residents, We know you have seen the great decorations on Gerritsen Avenue. Many have wanted to know who was responsible. GB Cares along with volunteers installed the lights this year and every previous year.

We hope that this letter finds you in good health and great spirits during if this holiday season. The holiday decorations along Gerritsen Avenue mean something different to each resident. For some. they are a great reminder that YOU are finally home at the end of a hard days work. To others. they are a reminder of the short days and long nights during this time of year and make us wish for summer. In any case. we hope that they put a smile on your face by giving you a bit of holiday cheer.

Thanks to donations from residents. local businesses. organizations and elected officials. we have decorations to install each Year. We want to give a,special thanks to everyone that helped fix and install the decorations on Gerritsen Avenue. If not for these volunteers the cost for decorating, Gerritsen Avenue would be about $10,000 a year.

The cost this year for the new decorations and other supplies will be about $2.800. We hope that YOU may consider making a donation to help cover this cost and to support the positive improvements that GB Cares continues to make for our neighborhood. Please support our community any way that you can

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

All the best,
The Board of GB Cares
