Despite promises from Councilman Fidler, the Parks department was indeed allowed to encroach on the Gerritsen Beach Little League, blocking their walkway. Parks recently “completed” the walkway, gate, guardrail mess (above) blocking normal pedestrian, stroller, dog walking, traffic while giving ATV’s easy access. It appears that it’s a parks department gate and not necessarily a community access gate. If that is true then we are going to need a parks department employee to unlock this gate whenever necessary. None of this makes any sense, the area is now 100% closed all the time instead of 100% open all the time. There used to be a small opening all the time through the guardrail (maybe 3 feet) then a huge concrete block to block any ATV’s from driving in. Now it’s closed 100% of the time. But now we have a 10+ foot gate that will be open when parks feels like it. No where in previous meetings was a new path discussed, suggested, nor was anything presented to the community.
Well, as it turns out the guardrail was replaced. No access gate yet but replaced nonetheless. Note: The Seba Avenue Comfort Station path is well under way and if you have not noticed the contractors recently removed a substantial length of the guardrail and a community access gate. According to Senator Goldens Town Hall, Parks does not know when the guardrail or the community access gate will be replaced. This is concerning as it could cause many new problems and rehash many old problems with Cars, Quads, Dirtbikes, Etc as there is nothing to anything or any one from doing anything malicious back there. This past weekend police from the 61 and 63 precincts came down to crackdown on ATV’s back weeds and on the street. This enforcement came as a result of all the recent attention to the Radio Controlled Society of Marine Park. At least one community member said “It’s about time…they [the riders] are not from this area and they are dangerous.” The police ended up confiscating a few ATV’s from anyone who was riding on the street. As much as it pains GerritsenBeach.net to bring it up: All weekend long kids were throwing rocks at people, buses and cars again from Seba Avenue Park. One resident even tried to reason with the kids:
We have also heard on good authority that one of the Radio Control Airplane guys saw a kid that he thinks was involved in throwing rocks at his vechile and started to yell at him. The kid ran home got his father, and a how dare you accuse my kid started and the Airplane Guy left for fear of retaliation. Editorial note: People have accused GerritsenBeach.net of “creating” these problems saying that they do not exist, have never existed and only exist because we wrote about it. They do exist, we are just the messenger. We hate these stories as much as you do because they are horrible to hear about and more horrible to know that it’s our kids. We only bring these stories to your attention to make you aware of what is happening in your community. However, If you have ever seen any historical Gerritsen Beach paper you would know that the issues we face today are the same issues that have been around since the year of the flood. We are judged on how we react to the situation. We have always intend to show the great things of the neighborhood and will continue to do so. We will show the “bad” when it becomes a neighborhood issue. There is an dangerous battle being fought Back Weeds at the airplane field. It’s being fought between the Radio Controlled Society of Marine Park (RCSMP) and local “rock throwing” kids. Over the weekend, the Parks Department along with 130 Volunteers planted about 2,000 trees and 500 shrubs across from the library. The trees planted were organized into research plots to allow scientists to study the ecological effects and benefits of urban trees. In the coming years, researchers will analyze soil nutrients, soil carbon, and plant diversity and abundance in the research plots to determine how urban forests can be managed to maximize benefits such as regulating air temperatures, filtering pollution, trapping rainwater and storing carbon dioxide. This large-scale, multi-institutional research project is led by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation’s Natural Resources Group; Columbia University’s Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology; The New School’s Tishman Environment and Design Center; and Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Study. The tree planting was part of a larger city wide event planing trees in all five boroughs with approximately 1,500 volunteers planting 20,000 trees in parks and natural areas. Much of the mulch at the planting sites was composed of reused woodchips from trees from the recent storm. Check out Million Tree NYC The vines and weeds along the soccer field fence have gotten a bit out of control. At the most recent Property Owners meeting the vines and overgrown weeds on the soccer field fence were discussed with State Senator Marty Golden. The Senator intends to contact the Parks Department to clean up that area as soon as possible. The morning after the West Nile Spraying, reports started to come in of dead animals on the weeds side. Specifically a crow and rat. Many believe that these animals and possibly many more died as a result of the spraying. To be fair, the correlation of these events does not imply causation. The whole situation would have to be investigated further. The City investigates clusters of 10 or more dead birds and three or more dead geese, swans, ducks, chicken, or turkeys. It is possible that the City will collect some of the birds for West Nile Virus testing. An investigation will determine if the birds will be collected. To dispose of nine or fewer dead birds or one or two dead geese, swans, ducks, chickens, or turkeys found on private property, use plastic bags or disposable rubber gloves to put the dead bird or birds in a double plastic bag. Place the bag outdoors for trash collection. Wash your hands with warm soapy water afterwards. A picture of the Point from Saturday July 3rd of all “outsiders” bringing in Jet Ski’s, BBQ’s, and parties. What’s wrong with this? Well it’s not really a beach that has lifeguards. We as a community do not need someone that can’t swim drown or hit by a Jet Ski. Which there was an accident recently. The point is a no standing zone – and it’s for a good reason. All of the buses we have here in Gerritsen Beach need to turn around and they cannot make a U-turn while the Point to Seba is packed with cars. Then have the fact that it’s not a beach! I’ve seen people and friends summonsed for being there. You cannot launch boats, Jet Skis, from that area. Basically you can only launch canoes or kayaks. Lastly, Do they clean up after themselves? I have one word to answer that:NYET! Coming in Via Email: by George

This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things
A Slow Day - Only Two Buses
It has to be said.
Garbage! Garbage! Garbage! Enough with the Garbage.
Despite artful messages the Gerritsen Avenue Soccer Fields are filthy! Why? Because our fields are growing more and more popular during the week with Day Care Camps. They come in by the busload and when they leave they don’t clean up after themselves!
These camps come in usually because Marine Park is filled and they come here to use our facilities.
Don’t get us wrong here we are all for having kids having fun but if they leave the place a mess it’s not worth it.
Who knows when Bergen Beach is coming back to clean it up!
