The Seba Avenue traffic signal is about complete as the signals and cross walk signals are up. The installation of the signal hopes to help parents cross the street safely.
Residents at the end of Gerritsen Avenue are struggling with a growing number of off-road vehicles who use Gerritsen Avenue for dangerous stunts and racing.
A video posted on YouTube in February shows an example of the use of these vehicles racing up and down Gerritsen Avenue at high speeds. The summer weather has brought out even more riders who race up and down Gerritsen Avenue and back weeds.
There are many law abiding ATV riders in the area that bring their ATV’s to a designated area. The issue in Gerritsen Beach is that many locals as well as some out of towners use Gerritsen Avenue and many of the Courts as their own private highway creating dangerous conditions. Another concern is that a few riders are tearing up the soccer and ball fields which are damaging them. Some locals and out of towners use back weeds which is considered to be illegal, but many residents of Gerritsen Beach are “okay with this” as they consider it “out of sight, out of mind”.
If you remember, in May 2007, a 26-year-old man was killed while street racing down Gerritsen Avenue during the early morning hours.
The police have always said that it’s difficult to catch offenders because they often take off when approached. If they were to chase the rider it would create an even more dangerous condition. Apparently, they never heard the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. While riding back weeds is technically illegal, some residents would rather have back weeds be used than the dangers of it happening on Gerritsen Avenue.
Here are some fun facts:
Just be reminded that Parks Enforcement or the Police can issue Criminal Court Summonses for unlawful operation of motorized vehicle and confiscate the ATV.

Why is summer such a dangerous time on Gerritsen Avenue
Speed – The speed limit on Gerritsen Avenue is 25 MPH for a reason. Speed kills pedestrians and can lead to a crash with less reaction time.
Teen drivers aren’t in school. When kids have the summer off, they are more likely to be on the road and they are more likely to be staying out late or even drinking on the weekends and during the week. College kids, too, aren’t studying on campus as they are during the academic year – they are more often on the road and out with friends. With less to do and less experience behind the wheel than most adults, teens become involved in accidents involving speeding, driver error, reckless driving, and drunk driving.
More cars are on the road. More vehicles out on the streets means more traffic and more accidents.
More pedestrians and cyclists are out and about. Just as there are more cars on the roads, there are also more motorcycles, bicycles, and people on foot. Distracted drivers and drivers who aren’t familiar with bicycle and pedestrian law smay find themselves in an accident before fall arrives.
Drinking More daylight hours and warmer weather, summer days can fool one into thinking less time and drinking has passed than has actually passed. The commercials and ads encourage you to drink “responsibly” – but the key here is that the companies that manufacture and sell alcohol ENCOURAGE YOU TO DRINK.
Gathering friends and families together to celebrate summer with backyard cookouts, pool parties, and baseball games is part of the American tradition. Most of these events include alcohol. After all, what is a hotdog or hamburger without a beer?
It is a hard conversation to have with a friend when you believe he has had too much to drink and needs to give up his keys and take a taxi home, get a ride with a sober friend or spend the night at your home. However, think about how much harder it would be to have a conversation with the police or his family if he were involved in a traffic accident. Moreover, think about the even HARDER conversation if that accident resulted in a fatality.
Do not “drink responsibly” and drive. Be responsible.
Yesterday, a middle aged man lost control of his car and ended up on the sidewalk. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced DOA.
