Post Sandy: Will We Be Ready for Halloween?

DSC_0268

Halloween is coming soon! and if you have noticed the Kids and Dirtbikes are out in full force recently.

Last year we had a bigger issue Superstorm Sandy. But the community had an impromptu parade.

In 2011 the community took back the streets. Starting very early on, the police had a strong presence on Gerritsen Avenue. They were patrolling the Avenue and the courts frequently. They also had foot posts with a patrol car at every intersection of a one mile stretch of road. During the prime trick or treating hours (4-8pm) there may have been up to 20 police vehicles and at least that many officers.  The officers were from not just the 61 precinct, officers were brought in from the 63, Patrol Boro Brooklyn South, and Brooklyn South Task Force.

For the first time in years, the B31 bus was not shut down. This is a major accomplishment for us as a community.  People were free to walk up and down Gerritsen Avenue without fear. Even yours truly was able to walk around and talk with people.  One person said “If this is what it takes then so be it”, another told me “Thank You”, others were just surprised to see me walking around and had a lot to say about last year. The property owners patrols were a success as well. They were able to get the word out and kept watch over the area.

There were a handful of arrests and at some point a dirtbiker thought it would a good idea to ride up and down the weeds with all of this police presence. Needless to say, it did not end well for the biker.

Although the 2010 events were full of drama it seems that we have seen a drastic improvement and was a complete success thanks to the Police, Property Owners, Councilman Fidler’s Office for standing up for us and State Senator Golden’s office for arranging essential meetings.

How do you feel?

It’s a shame we have to shut down Gerritsen Beach like it’s Syria with police presence, I don’t understand how some peole feel that it’s ok to throw eggs, shaving cream, rocks, etc. at other people. Why can’t you just have fun the normal way or if you want to toss stuff at each other do it at your own homes? It’s so messed up.

How come I do not believe you!

  • Pixie

I guess we will see if the community thugs can act civilized this year.

  • Mr Murphy

Anyone hear of any incidents last night ?

  • Trainman

All quiet on the Western front:-)

  • DB

Maybe all the thugs lived in the Old Section and their rentals were flooded or destroyed by Sandy.

Shame on you. And you were probably in church this morning. 1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. Maybe that was 3 years ago and the 14, 15 year olds are now 17 & 18. Maybe everyone makes mistakes and deserves second chances and forgiveness. Maybe you need to get a life and stop being so mean spirited.

      • DB

God bless you to !! To bad we are judged by our actions (even if they were three years ago )

And you have led such a perfect life? Puleese! Teenagers do stupid things sometimes. They have an excuse, their brains aren’t all there until they’re 21 or so. Biologically, they don’t have the capacity. Even the law recognizes this and handles their crimes differently.

          • Pixie

Now lets say a teenager commits a crime at 18 or even 17 he gets away with it, I think not. Now who is making excuses for sub human behavior. Could it be this is hitting close to home.

      • Mr Murphy

Maybe you should consider becoming a man of the Church. Sounds like your going in the right direction. Just think of all the poor souls you could help repent, starting with DB. BTW I think I know what DB stands for LOL.!!

          Dirt Bag?

Actually, I’m an atheist. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t know what the bible says or that I don’t appreciate some of the great wisdom in it. You know, like ‘do unto others as you would have done onto yourself’.

      • Trainman

I’m not necessarily trying to beat a dead horse anonymous, but apparently it never really sunk into your mind the magnitude of what went on that Halloween. It was not only the disturbances from some of the young residents that part took on that fateful day but also the reaction of many of their parents in defense of their children’s behavior.
Unfortunately, it’s that aspect that will stay with me a little while longer.

      DB+Douche Bag?

  • DB

So you are an atheist ? and you quote the Bible. I think you need might be a bit Confused LOL.

  • Kelly D

Sounds to me that Anonymous(which ever one that might be) was one of the poor innocent teenagers from three years ago. Sure tell that to the woman who got stones etc. thrown at her while she was walking with her young child. Give me a break, “Once a Thug always a Thug” !!
