Sandy should be filled in with asterisks like a curse word. S****y.

Can someone tell me what is the city or state doing to prevent this all this from happening again in the future.
I have not seen any indication that there are even plans in place to make NYC better equipped to handle another big storm.
I am also still waiting to hear how and if I will have to raise my home.
Does anyone have any information on this?

    • If a certain percentage of your home was damaged by Sandy, and it is not already above FEMAs guidelines, it’s my understanding that you will be required to raise your home if you want FEMA to cover you next time. Make sure to register for Build it Back. They’re moving slow as can be, but that is the program that will distribute funds for making those alterations… eventually. In theory. And depending on the amount of funding they receive.

      But still, that’s something.

First of all there is not much the City or State can do to prevent storms. The only thing they can do is advise when and where to evacuate. Besides building a giant Dyke around the entire city there really is no protection against natural disasters like storms. As far as raising the house goes, that is entirely the home owners responsibility. I recently purchased a damaged home in the Beach and currently in the process of raising it to conform to the new standards, so I can get insurance coverage.

They are raising the beach up 25 feet. Unfortunately, they forgot to put in the plans any ramps to get up to the new height so ladders will be the new norm.

  • Pixie

Besides the few of you, looks like no one cares about this site anymore. Maybe it is because the Like and Dislike are gone. The anon’s can’t Dislike others from their PCs anymore, Guess that’s just tuff luck !

  • Trainman

Pixie, I think a lot of people would love to have a functioning website for their community. Unfortunately too many negative thinking people with very little to say, overwhelmed the few good contributors that took this site seriously. If the administrator of this site followed the recommendations from the few that were truly contributing and require real names and valid e-mail addresses, perhaps we could restore this website to accurately reflect the good people of GB

PS I was never a fan of the like/dislike feature either. If someone disagrees with someone’s statement they can always reply.

  • Pixie

Trainman, I totally agree with you. I have noticed in the past that certain posters were always bombarded with Dislikes. Not because they posted poor comments only because who they were. That in my pinion was a cowardly way of telling someone I don’t like you etc, etc. Case in Point when Irish Kevin posted some good advice about dealing with insurance companies and FEMA the Dislikes came out in force. So using his past experience with insurance companies in a positive way to help some of us went by the wayside because of the few who for some reason dislike him. JMO

Pixie, Boy do you have that right !!

  • Trainman

    Kelly D and Pixie,
I think it goes way beyond people being annoyed with each other. Unfortunately the Internet is full of people who, sadly to say, have very little going on in their lives and they just surfed the Internet to occupy themselves. They latched on to a website and comment negatively just to get a rise from that person. I once commented on a subject and got three dislikes and then sent an open letter requesting that those three people to please tell me why they disagreed with my statement. After waiting many days not one person responded probably because they really didn’t have anything to say but just wanted to feel like they’re in the mix.

The only reason I stopped posting on this site is because it was never updated especially when our neighborhood really needed it, after the hurricane. It would have been wonderful to have had a place to go to find out information that was up to date and important. I was really disappointed that we had no place to turn for information.
Gerritsen beach .net would have been a perfect place to place get all the information together and give it out to the Gerritsen beach residents.
I don’t care if there is a like or dislike button that means nothing to me only reliable information about our neighborhood.

  • Kelly D

Trainman and Anon Also, Agreed on both replies. To add a bit I noticed that the site was becoming a place to support certain political candidates, may I add by the site. This was a turnoff, But when the support was essentially ineffective more than likely noticed by the site the interest in this site seemed to diminish. JMO.

  • Mr Murphy

I would like to chime in on this one. I have noticed a real decline in this sites principles as far as posting new stories, Beach news etc. I can only assume that the site did not do what the founders expected it to. It would have been nice for the site to be more of a resource for the people of the Beach than it has turned out to be. As far as Pixie’s comment goes on people being more interested in Disliking others than the content and usefulness of their posts I totally agree. So now we have a site that benefits no one. JMO as well.

Founders? It is one guy. Instead of complaining, why not get involved. Send in what is happening.

I don’t know if you have seen him around but it appears his allegiances have shifted to another organization. For the better? Who knows. Not for the better of neighborhood news, that’s for sure.

I do miss the news, it was very exciting to come in and see everything that was going on on the site.

Dan, If you ever come back to us! I would love to know the real story behind NY Cares!

      • Mr Murphy

Anonymous are you suggesting that I post the News and Happenings in the Beach ? I was under the impression this is what this site once did. So you are saying that Dan has lost interest in this site and now is involved with NY Cares. That is what I figured as well, Looks like this site will just fade away into oblivion. Look at it this way at least it was good while it lasted. So to speak ?? BTW; I bet some of our Posters would be able to get this site up and running again.

  • Trainman

    Anonymous,
You’re right that Dan hasn’t been paying much attention to this site and you’re also right that people are not contributing new stories and leaving it up to Dan to do all the work. If you remember he was also threatened by some people on this site along with some property damage to his home. I too miss this site and I wish someone as enterprising as Dan would offered to take it over and restore GB.net to the levels it was five years ago.
My experience with the other sites in our area are they seem to lack the petty bickering and insults by people towards one another. Another observation reveals that no one could post anonymously. Could there be a connection?

  • Trainman

I just noticed the comment I just made at 6:01 PM on Tuesday, September 10, was placed on hold and said
    “Your comment is awaiting moderation”
A euphemism for censoring which I take exception to. Apparently there are some words that trigger a filtering process; A process that I took exception to a few years ago and I don’t feel any better about it now.

  • Mr Murphy

Trainman, My post on 6:30PM 9/10/13 is being held as well. Moderation Sure !!

  • anonymous

I noticed that some of the other sites in the area do not allow comments. I guess the site that do allow posts are censoring the comments, which in some case may be a good idea If the conversation goes off topic or if the comment is making nasty remarks about the poster that should not be allowed on a community site.

One suggestion that if this site starts up again I would really appreciate it if the community could start discussions. Many times when I wanted to let people know about something that was important I would have to post under another discussion and the information would be buried only because I was not able to start one of my own. I feel that’s important to let people know about incidents that may in our neighborhood

Anonymous, you must have a short memory or perhaps you’re not a contributor to this site very long. I can’t tell because your handle is exactly the same as many others who contribute to this site. The creator of this site (I can’t mention his name or this reply would “be held for consideration”) sent out numerous requests for contributors to this site and some did, the antisocial contributors came out and greeted these contributions with disdain and relentless criticism. Never any constructive criticism or an alternative point of view, just negativity. At that time I was preparing a contribution of my own and when I saw how things were going, I decided it would be a waste of my time and energy. These cloaked people would disparage everyone and anyone until most of the “real” contributors left and the creator lost interest.

  • Irish Kevin

Trainman, Very well said. I also wish one could leave information, News etc. on this site without being subject to negative comments, one good thing is that the Dislike feature is gone that when reaching a number of times it removed your posting. I remember this site from years ago when it was a positive for the Beach. In my opinion the Dislike and Anonymous posting feature contributed to the sites downfall. Posting with a name even if it is not the persons real name still gives the poster an identity.

    • Pixie

Kevin and Trainman I agree. The problem as I see it is the Dislikers need to fess up and identify themselves. But we all know it’s to easy to take cover behind a keyboard. It is unfortunate some people have nothing better to do. I think the lack of traffic on this site is do to the fact that the Dislike feature is gone.

    • Biff Tannen

This brings back memories. Most of the time when I posted the truth they hit the dislike and my posts were gone

  • This is a utter informative article.I was looking representing these things and here I found it. I am doing a job and this intelligence is very usable me. If you are interested, but this is my duty to inform you that accepted administrative link a least dedicated navy and can be applied anywhere you want and acquire

I think it is time to go back to school and learn how to write and what grammar is, it certainly is not present in your attempt to get free advertising. This kind of garbage should be held for administrative viewing.!!

  • Marty McFly

I jumped in my DeLoean and went back to 1955, so I won’t have to worry about the storm for another 58 years. Just kidding people. It’s nice to see some old names again on here and everyone is okay. Trainman, i’m happy that things are good for you. I hope everyone continues to be well and prosper. Lord knows we have all paid a dear price this past year. BTW, does anyone know if there will be a gathering on 10/29/13 to mark the one year anniversary of Sandy?

  • Marty McFly

Sorry Trainman, I meant Irish Kevin.

  • Marty McFly

Amen Kevin. BTW my name is Bill.

  • Pixie

I was watching a special on the Weather Channel about the rising oceans. They said that Miami Beach will be under water in many sections in a decade. This is something we need to look at and give some taught about. I for one am seriously thinking about relocating, not that I want to but as a precaution. I have read many articles about ocean levels rising, I think Sandy was a warning and the beginning of an entirely new weather cycle.

  • Trainman

Pixie, your predictions seem to be accurate according to all the scientific data I have read. Either you believe that global warming is a man-made occurrence or a reoccurring global event that happens every few thousand years, the results are the same. Its said that the ocean has already risen about 3 feet in the last 600 years and another foot or so over the next 100 years. As far as panicking and selling my home here in GB, I don’t see that happening any time soon. According to historians in the Beach the last flooding occurred in 1937 the results of a extremely powerful hurricane and even then only a fraction of the Beach sustained serious flooding.
Could Sandy happen again? Absolutely but I’m going to bet it won’t be in my lifetime.

Trainman I have been around for a while and Do Not have a short memory
I was posting under my real name Jane but also got tired of the nasty replies, so I resorted to Anonymous just like many other posters to avoid the aggravation. BTW how is trainman any different from anonymous I have no idea who trainman is, and to be honest I don’t really care.
I am just interested in what you have to say not who you are.

  • Trainman

Dear anonymous (Jane) It’s true that I also use a synonym but there is only one trainman and many anonymous. I may have known that you were a regular to this site and lived in the beach if you took on a name that you personally would be known by it doesn’t have to be your real name.. I really didn’t know which anonymous I was speaking to.

Oh, by the way my name is Bob and it’s nice to meet you.

  • retriever

i haven’t been on this site lately, thought it was taken down. Glad to know it’s back. I registered with NYC Build it Back on July 28 and as of today haven’t heard a thing. Has anyone?

  • Pixie

Trainman, According to Ocean Science at NOAA these changes are being predicted in 10 to 20 years.

  • Trainman

    Pixie,
That prediction may very well be true for parts of Miami Beach especially if those areas that you mentioned have very little elevation relating to normal sea level. Those predictions may also be true for the Gulf states especially south of New Orleans. Up here we have Seagate and Breezy Point which are also extremely vulnerable. Here in the beach we have some elevation like so many other communities near the water. I also like to mention that our government is rebuilding many areas that were affected by Sandy so apparently, save for another catastrophic storm, they don’t see any immediate concern about our coastal communities.
(That’s providing they know what the hell they’re doing)
    I can’t believe I’m quoting elected officials :-)

  • Pixie

Trainman, I will go along with most of what you said, As far as them knowing what they are doing look at the mess in Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Okeechobee and many more oversights made by our government that can’t even agree about about keeping running. Now as far as the Beach having elevation it is only marginal to say the least. For example my back yard never got creek water in it years ago, for the past 20 years on a moon tide we get a good six inches of water and my basement gets water from ground saturation. Now if it rains at that time boy it stays wet for a week. So I installed a auto sump pump system, now twice a month I hear the pump cycle on and off for a day or two. I Had some cement work done in my basement to accomplish this the contractor could not believe that the house is still standing he said the dirt and sand under and around the foundation were soft and muddy. After all said you can see why I am concerned.

  • Shea

Pixie, When I lived in the Beach my house had the same problem as yours. I recall I started noticing it in the late 80s. Did what you did Cemented entire basement floor installed a Auto Sump Pump recessed 18″ below the floor so it would come on before basement flooded. What would happen when the water level would rise(twice a month on the full moon cycle) the ground would saturate and my basement started getting flooded. Funny you mentioned about what your contractor said ours told us the same thing. Who knows maybe it was the same guy. When I sold the house both inspectors the buyers and the buyers bank never even took a look at the condition of the soil.(good thing they didn’t) One day they will get wise to this and start rejecting mortgages based on risk factor.

  • retriever

I guss no one wants to answer me. Thanks for nothing

    • Pixie

Sorry Retriever, Did not have any thing to add to your post. I did not register been building back mostly out of my own pocket, hoping to get some back from insurance companies but not holding my breath. As far as the site being back goes I as well am glad to see it. Not many are participating these days. Who knows maybe it is that the like and dislike are gone ?

      • Kelly D

That is what it must be now they have to reply to our posts directly . They can’t hit the dislike so we disappear. I would like to be able to post on here without being erased anonymously by someone who disagrees with what I posted.

      • anonymous

Kelly Do you think we care ?

  • Mr Murphy

It would be nice to see this site come back to life.

  • anonymous

What are you trying to do,advertise for free on a local neighborhood web site? At least find a person that can type a legitimate sentence or two.
