Halloween 2012 approaches and you maybe remember (Recently Transferred) Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Georgios Mastrokostas, had promised a sustained response over the years to ensure Halloween 2010 would never happen again. Halloween 2011 saw a major response and a quiet calm halloween.
That statement was the past, we now have a new Commanding Officer of the 61 Precinct; Captain John M. Chell. As of right now, there is no public statement or commitment of resources for our area. In comparison to last year, DI Mastrokostas reached out early to residents for ideas. Hopefully we will hear something soon.
Locally, there has not yet been any statement. However, the GBPOA (Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association) will meet the first Wednesday of October.
The 61 will more than likely keep the same response level. If they keep the same level of response we should expect:
- Officers at every other intersection.
- Officers at the Parks.
- Patrols following Buses.
- Roving patrols in weeds with all terrain vehicles.
- Sky Watch (this is a long shot, but it may be available)
- TARU Video cameras and such (also a long shot but who knows)

Gerritsen Beach is a very safe neighborhood. Kids love trick-or-treating in the neighborhood – lots of candy, lots of families out and about, and lots of decorated houses. It is really a nice experience. I believe this site has some pics in posts of previous years under “Halloween – The Good”. I’d worry more about my kids after dark in Bay Ridge.

@ Anonymous, Yes, I have gone egging as a teen but it was just eggs and only against friends or another group of teens that challanged us. Under no circumstances did we target adults and their children, throw rocks at a bus causing service to stop, or destroy the bus stop shelters.

It is a shame that the police have to be stationed all over Gerritsen Beach for Halloween, but it is not a waste of police manpower. The criminal acts that have been tolerated in the neighborhood in recent years are over. Halloween should be fun and safe for small kids, not an excuse for teenagers to run wild, attack buses, and terrorize neighbors. Please help this situation by keeping your teenager off the streets. This has really gone too far. When we were kids, we threw eggs and shaving cream at each other. We did not attack people on the street and destroy property. There is a big difference.

Holloween 2010 was a nice way for People to see the Beach. We are called Trailer Trash ever wonder why? The Kids running from the Police Great Picture. I for one think that respect starts in the home. All of our residents should teach that to their children from the time the little ones can understand English. Last year these “kids” (and I use that term very loosely) broke the window of my store and almost injured someone, who was working here that night. The idea that throwing a rock and damaging someone’s property seems like fun is just, for the lack of better word, well, idiotic to me.
The sad thing is that the window was smashed a week after Halloween. Sure, Halloween was nice and quiet, but these punks got all upset that the police ruined their “Halloween Massacre” and were harassing my store for a week, throwing small rocks every night, until, one night, they got a bright idea of throwing a huge rock that broke a window and cost me significant amount of money to replace.
This year, I will be at my store myself, getting ready with my trusted baseball bat. Unfortunately for myself and Laundromat, we are easy targets since we are the only ones open on the avenue at that time. 61st Precinct promised me increased presence. However, I will believe it when I see it. The only thing I hope is that neighborhood actually teaches these punks a lesson.
After the smashing of the window last year, many people stopped by every night for weeks just to make sure that I am OK and nothing like that happens again. I am very thankful for that. However, this year, I am hoping that this doesn’t happen at all.

The way I see it this year can go one of two ways. Either we do nothing and the avenue will have a strong police showing year after year which sends the message to the rest of brooklyn that our neighborhood is not safe. Or we kick a few punk asses but good. This will bring the police also, but I guarentee they will only have to come once to investigate with no results and the punks will never get out of line again. This too will send a message to other area’s. The hard working honest people of GB take care of their own.

Sorry, but I just don’t get GB. I didn’t grow up here but have lived here for 22 years now. Seems like half want to get together and beat up the punks which most likely will never happen. The other half just like to point fingers at the their neighbors and not talk to them or get involved. You can’t have your cake and eat it too! Thanks Ryland. The times have changed. When I was growing up in the 60′s if I was caught doing something bad by a neighbor, they had my parents permission to beat my ass. Then my parents would beat my ass too. Over the years more and more laws have been passed to protect the kids. I’m all for laws which protect kids, but they also tie our hands as adults and parents and pretty much lets these kids run wild. As an adult or even a parent, lay a hand on a kid and you can find yourself in jail.

keep the uniform police offioers visible, so they are seen by everyone but have some undercover police officers positioned in different areas,they wil get a better view of anyone causing problems.the punks will not know is that person a cop or not.we the beach residents hope the new commanding officer captain john m. chell has a strong strategic plan to stop this nonsense for good.arrest them, make an example of one of them.

People have been posting on here about taking care of our neighborhood and going after the punks. I doubt this will ever happen. I can’t blame anyone for not getting involved in this type of vigilantism. We grew up, have resposibilities to our families, our homes and our jobs. Why jeopardize what you have worked so hard for to achieve? These kids don’t have these things to lose. They may even retaliate causing damage to your home or family. I understand a few good beating will put them in place and make them stop, but is it worth the risk?

He reminded me of a guy in Bay Ridge in the late 70′s early 80′s. He walked around 4th avenue with his beer. He owned a colonial house but prefered to live on the streets. Found out later he was a POW in Vietnam and was kept outside in a cage for 5 years. He couldn’t take being inclosed inside anymore. Opie didn’t have that problem, but he reminded me of him from time to time.
