The vollies are wrapping up their 2012 Golden Donor drive and are making another push – this time online.

This past September we began our Annual Fund Drive for 2012. Letters requesting donations were delivered to the doors of over 2,000 homes and businesses in Gerrittsen Beach, and to date a total of 420 total donations have been received. If you have already donated since September, please accept our sincere thanks for your contribution. Your support is necessary to keep our unique organization afloat. Gerrittsen Beach Fire Department is the only Volunteer Fire Department in Brooklyn and is necessary for the safety of our community.
In March, our annual payment of $29,733.12 is due for the fire truck. Insurance payments of $29,000.00 are paid through the year for liability for the trucks and buildings. Supplies, equipment and operations run a costly $40,000.00 annually. These expenses cannot be paid without your help.
There have been many new developments at the Gerritsen Beach Fire Department that will benefit the community tremendously. In August we elected and installed the new Officers and Fire Council. The Chief, John Czap, and new corporation President Mike Castro will be directing the department since they were sworn in this past week. Our Treasurer, Dan Ene, is doing an great job of keeping the books.
A volunteer fire department depends on the dedication and commitment of community members, and we’re happy to say that during the past year we have seen an influx of new members. We have been busy training the many new EMTs, firefighters, dispatchers and youth members that will be on call for you 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency. Even an old category Special Services has been re-activated for members who want to offer their expertise to assist the department.
At the moment the department is teaching an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course with seventeen students at the Memorial Hall with three students being department members. The last EMT class we had graduated four new EMT’s. Looking ahead, we will be holding additional CPR classes for the community and in June we will hold our annual Chinese Auction.
Please take a moment to send in your needed donation in the enclosed postage paid envelope. To be a Golden donor this year is $85.00 but every donation counts towards our fundraising efforts. Golden Donors will receive a golden donor window sticker in the mail. Please send what ever you can as soon as possible. To save postage, you can drop your donation in the mailbox at 52 Seba Ave. There are almost 50 members, on call for you, 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
