Why is there no cleanup or development along that stretch
of the park? It appears our local Parks Dept doesn’t want to acknowledge that that area is the lover’s lane of drug adicts, sexual deviants & trash dumpers at night. Maybe they should clear the land and add some fill and make a real park area up to the waters edge like they were most willing to do by the Brooklyn Bridge.
Hot debate. What do you think?

There is no development along that stretch because it is a protected nature preserve and natural salt marsh. It is not only home to a number of species of bird but also serves as a nesting ground for crabs, shrimp and sport fish before they grow and venture out into open water. Also I can see your point with people doing drugs and dumping garbage but sexual deviants? I have never heard somebody say “I wanna get laid lets head down to the marsh lands”

Thank you. That was a very well said response. What the other person fails to realize, it could be an accident, or that body could have been put in the water at any number of places and washed up there. We do not have any information as to what happened. As for the phrase “I wanna get laid lets head down to the marsh lands” I could see a 16yo boy saying that and a girl saying get lost. But 99% of 16yo boys don’t put bodies in the water. Dumping garbage in the weeds and parks, I never understood that. There are thousands of trash cans in the city. I can see drugs being done, in the 70′s my friends and I would go to the park and smoke pot and drink, but we always threw our empty cans and bottles in the trash can. We may have gotten high, but we still liked a clean park.

A clean up I can understand as far as trash goes. Developing an area has never detered crime, in fact, crime has risen in any area that has been developed. Since this is a protected natural preserve, it is state funded. If you were to turn it into a city park, it would be left unkept, unless you have volunteers. The city can’t take care of the parks they have let alone add a new one. Just walk around the city and take a good look at the parks.

The body of a man found floating in a Marine Park salt marsh Friday has been identified, cops said.
The parents of Alex Bender, 45, who lived nearby, confirmed that the body was that of their son whom they had reported missing earlier that day, police sources said.
A passer-by had discovered the body near the Salt Marsh Nature Center on Avenue U near East 33rd Street at about 2:30 p.m. and alerted a park ranger, who called 911, authorities said.
Sources said the man suffered from depression, and no criminality is suspected.

I agree that statements made in poor taste have no place here. But as of yet, we still have no information. We do not know if it murder, an accident or suicide. We need to know the facts before we say his life was taken from him.
