John Samuelsen, TWU president, leads contract talks with MTA

DSCF8265

On a rainy mid-December night, transit union president John Samuelsen led hundreds of chanting, whistle-blowing workers on a head-turning march through lower Manhattan.

As a member of Local 100 & a Beachite for 60+ years, I was shocked to find John was one of us. He is a man of honor, truly fights for what he believes in. I only hope he doesn’t make us “walk”.

  • Anonymous

You can always tell when a city union is in contract negotiations because the news, especially the NYPost will print some half assed, skewed ‘story’ about members. Like the BS last week about the bus drivers sitting around for the day so the MTA could save some money not running busses during a slow week. They make it seem like the drivers just decided on their own to not take their busses out. Maybe if the MTA planned this better some guys could have used vacation time, maybe offer them an extra day to take some of their vacation during the undesireable winter. But no, they tell them to stay in the depot and then invite the Post to make it look like they are slackers. Why? Because they want to turn driving a bus and I’m sure ALL of the MTA jobs into part time jobs. Then they don’t have to pay family benefits. Penny wise and dollar foolish. I work for another city agency that has done this, hire only part time now, so I work with young guys who work 4 hrs. a day, medical only covers themselves so the wife and kids are on medicaid and qualify for food stamps. Ridiculous! The MTA should look at their bloated, high paid upper echelons, their vast real estate holdings etc. if they want to find savings. People need good jobs. Solid jobs. Dig your heels in John, fight for your members and their families and for our city!

  • Ralph Cramden

Mr. Marshal, YOU are a bum!

  • Just wondering

Did you see todays Daily News. While the city cries poverty it’s going to build a golf course at tax payer expence on the Bronx side of the Whitestone. Donald Trump gets to run it for 4 years for FREE. Then he gets to run it for 300 thousand per year. guy with a hot dog stand in front of the Met pays 600 thousand. Always looking out for their rich buds while they depict workers as criminals and negotiate contracts through the dirtbag press.

    • Anonymous

Your right, it is crazy! And who does this golf course serve? The article said the fees will be 3X any other in the city. I guess it will be for rich manhattanites and the residents of Whitestone where houses start at a million. Oh wait! A few of the 99% will be able to mow the grass and be caddies! See they DO care about the little people! Crazy us! It’s job creation! Maybe one of those new part time bus drivers can caddy on the side!

    • anonymous

Here is a prime example of your “Fathead Midget Mayor” and his wealthy cronies getting richer..That is all this little S.O.B. has done for 3 terms now, is steal land and condemn property..So they can build new things and make more money…I would like to know if the Golf Course will be tax abated, along with all the other places recently built…I don’t think we should be even talking about layoffs,cut-backs or anyone losing a job…Until all of these political sweet-heart deals are investigated

    • Anonymous

I heard they are going to have a huge club house on the 9th hole with a spa and massages.

  • Biff Tannen

As I said before The B-31 Service will soon be Toast if these BoZos from the MTA have any say in it.

    • Anonymous

Yet, most of the expense of running a bus line for each run is the salary of the MTA employee. But we will just ignore that here.

      • Biff Tannen

This is true,I bet not one MTA Employee is let go. Funny how the Public Gets screwed again.

      • Just wondering

Do you work for free ?????

      • Anonymous

So what are you saying? The busses should drive themselves or the drivers should work for free? Jackass! Where is all the money they “saved” when they put in the Metrocard system and got rid of all the tollbooth clerks? That used to be a decent job too. Anyone who complains about the unemployment rate in this country as got to be realistic about where all the jobs have gone. What about the jobs that were deleted because of the Easy Pass system? Where is all the money they saved? We were all told that all the money was going toward salaries and benefits for MIDDLE CLASS WORKERS and thats why the roads sucked. Well, we have had EasyPsss for years now and the roads and bridges are worse than ever. Where is all that money they “saved”? They still keep raising all the tolls. How stupid are we that we then allow them to funnel money and tax abatements to people that are already millionaires and are fooled into believing that they are going to create jobs. All they create is more money and exclusivity for themselves.

  • Jerry Butler

This Guy looks like he has been eating quite well !

  • Anonymous

Meanwhile they continue work on the 2nd avenue line in Manhattan, and have even put entire families up in hotels.

    • Anonymous

The 2nd Ave line is going to add massive amounts of tax revenues by opening up the East Side to business. The Lex line can’t all the traffic.

  • Anonymous

If they do decide to discontinue the B31, it would be devastating to the community. 80% to 90% of the people here depend on the B31 to get to work everyday. We’re one of the few communities that rely on one bus line. We can’t walk 2 or 3 blocks to catch another bus like most of the city. Instead of shutting down the B31, take one bus off a few lines around the city to make up for your wasteful spending.

    • Anonymous

They would probably just make a shuttle bus to Ave. U.

      • Anonymous

That wouldn’t really save them much money. They would still have to pay the driver’s, unless the use part timers. From the point to east 16th street isn’t a very long run. Although, having a shuttle to avenue U only and using part timers would save on maintenance, benefits and gas. But who pays the real price, WE DO!

        • Anonymous

Why dont you take the job. Work weekends , nights & holidays. get cursed at , spit on. get hit with bottles, Bricks, get punched while driving, get stabbed in the face with an afro-pick like I have. But I’m lucky, I have’nt been shot in the eye with a BB gun or had acid thrown in my face like some of my co- workers. never mind the ones that were shot & stabbed. Then come back & tell us if you feel you are overpaid. Otherwise , confine your armchair comments to televised sports because you have no idea what you are talking about .

          • Beachwalker

I am not a bus driver or have any in my family, but any job dealing with the public is difficult. There are also inherent physical problems with any job driving all day. (Back, leg, circulatory, polynidal cysts etc. ) Does anyone really think that anyone gets rich driving a bus?? Is it so wrong to just want to do a job that you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to do, get paid a decent salary, not have to worry that you will be wiped out if one of your children gets sick? The talk of part time work is ridiculous. Who can support themselves on part time work, much less a family? When the city does this to people and then they or their families qualify for Medicaid/food stamps/subsidized housing etc. the city is only shifting the burden from your city taxes to your Federal tax dollars. Then the fathead midget takes those ‘savings’ and uses them to enrich his rich buddies further. Your not saving shit. Your helping to put the middle class out of work.

          • "Marty McFly"

Sounds like you really hate your job. So maybe you should quit.I hear that McDonalds is Hiring. But they are non Union.

Why don’t you take a long ride on a short bus!

@ Marty McFly, what do you do for a living ? Punch assholes in hobby horses for Toys R Us

          • "Marty McFly"

To answer your question,First of all answer questions of assholes like you,and second work for the MTA.

          • Anonymous

Why put down people who work at Mc Donalds or Wendy’s. My dad would say ” Son, theres no such thing as a bad job, just bad pay”

          • Anonymous

Wouldn’t a long ride on a short bus still get you there the same as a long ride on a long bus. It’s not really the same as the short pier thing.

        • Anonymous

One bus is all it would take and it could be a short bus for the specials.

          • You want fries with that?

McDonalds is a UNION job. The restaurant association is an good union. Joke about McDonalds all you want but the fact is it is a well run chain, good to their employees as far as training and the opportunity for advancement.

          • Biff Tannen

OK Pal I will take what you say as True. How about Wendy’s ? BTW do you work at McDonalds ? If so It is good to be Loyal to your Employer. Bravo !!

          • Anonymous

No, I don’t work for Micky D’s or any other fast food establishment, never have, but they are all in the restaurant union. They get reliable increases in pay without having to resort to the groveling and scraping that city unions do. I do belong to a city union and haven’t had a raise in over 4 years. It is very hard to keep up with the bills when everything keeps increasing except your pay.

          • Biff Tannen

Look on the Bright side of things,at least you still have a job. The saying goes the average guy keeps getting screwed. Take a Good Look at Big Boy and others like him High up in City Jobs that’s where your raises are going to. These Union higher ups are lacking nothing.

          • Anonymous

It’s true about them not lacking anything. I recently made this point in no uncertain terms to my union officials that THEY get raises every year, regardless of our contract status. I suggested that they not get increases while any of the divisions that they represent are working under expired comtracts. Got a rousing standing ovation from the membership and really dirty looks from the officials. On the other hand, their jobs aren’t easy either and they have alot of people to answer to. John has a tough job ahead and I wish him luck and the skill to negotiate a fair contract for his membership without people losing their jobs or benefits.

          • Pixie

The Union officials lack Nothing. Someone said this guy looks like he has been Eating well. That did not go over with some on here. Know what the Union Officials get paid well and Lack Nothing..While many of us are sitting on the bench waiting for work these guys are eating steak and drinking well enjoying their Holidays while the union members can’t even buy gifts for their kids. All you see is these guys in the headlines,I wish they would post how many Union members are unemployed and living hand to mouth after being laid off. Really this BS has gone far enough.

    • Anonymous

Where are you getting anything about discontinuing the B31? They won’t do that, the MTA knows it’s the only way in/out. You are pulling that out of thin air. What are you trying to say – if Local doesn’t go along with the lame plans of the MTA they are going to discontinue the B31? Where are you getting that? What kind of job do you have? Do YOU get a raise every year? Do YOU have benefits? Why do you expect other people to work for crumbs?

      • Anonymous

It would be kind of funny if they cut the bus route of the head of the workers union.

        • Anonymous

LOL, it would be even funnier if they cut it in the neighborhoods where the MTA brass lives, oh, but wait, none of them have to take public transportation. They all ride in limos and chauffeured SUV’s. And talk about people who feed at the public trough and don’t live in the City where do you think they live? I’d love to know how many of the MTA’s brass live in the 5 boros and pay taxes here. Stop believing the crap that the NYPost feeds you and start thinking rationally about what is REALLY going on here. Middle and Lower income people are not the enemy. Don’t drink Bloombergs coolaid!

  • Just wondering

Transit workers pay taxes too !!!!!

I am a unionized worker and I am not “lucky” to have a job…I work for the city for 20 years so far and I earned every penny I get…stop hating because you didn’t get a city job back in the 80′s and instead opted for Wall St or a banking job…

    • Anonymous

I agree with that anon. People drinking the NYPost Koolaid believe that City workers get paid for doing nothing. The truth is that many are doing all the most dangerous, life shortening jobs around. We work around the clock to the detriment to our health and families. The unions aren’t only about pay and benefits but about safety and compensation for your contribution to the city that never sleeps. People in Wall St./banking etc. who tend to lose their jobs when they are making good salaries, to be replaced by new guys making starting pay have no recourse. They shouldn’t be hating the people in union jobs where senority means something, they should be asking themselves why they don’t have a union to stand up for them when they are clearly being thrown out of work for nothing more than working hard and long enough to be making a good salary.

      • Old Geezer

The Unions were necessary back in the Good Old Days because Employers tended to take advantage of workers. I believe that the Union is now becoming necessary again due to the downsizing of personal because of the economy. These same companies are quick to Lay Off workers yet leaving the overpaid Higher ups in place. The so called Managers,VPs,CEOs, are cutting from the bottom to save their own butts. They are replacing employees with lower paid workers and calling it a downsizing where in fact it is just an excuse to pay less. The new thing is called under Employment,The Employers are using threats to keep the Employees in line and not ask for raises. When in fact the big wigs are not only getting raises but corporate spiffs as well. This is why I feel the Unions are Necessary again.

        • Anonymous

National average wage for CEO’s was up 37% last year

          • Beachwalker

Yup. top 1% still raking it in and the city and state does nothing but bs about how they are so broke that they need to cut out pensions. Cuomo wants everyone to have a 401k plan, with payroll deductions, basically pay for our own pensions. If the State does this, the City will follow. I don’t know about the rest of you but we were trying to save on the side with a 401k and it TANKED when the market crashed. Along with millions of other people, retirement became an impossible dream. The fact is we will probably have to work until we are dead. And alot of other people will also, NOT giving up our jobs to the next generation, what will they do? But our Fathead Midget of a Mayor, (thanks to the guy that came up with that name for him!) the 7th richest man in the WORLD tells us, sorry you can’t have raises, no matter how much the cost of living in this city gets, that we must give back pension contributions, sick days, vacation time etc. while with the other hand he gives a HUGE break to Trump to build a golf course, while he spends 700 million of city money to buy waterfront property to develop luxury housing and ‘promnades’. Who are all those developers going to be? Why all his already wealthy buddies, of course. How about some accountability for the millions wasted with Citytime and all the other crap he has done. Funny how the rich can always justify what they want, take what they want and make everyone else out to be just a bunch of lazy leaches. Sorry for standing on the soapbox, but I have been working since I am 14, I am tired and the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off because I can’t pay the bill.

Who would that bother? Carnival is the worst cruise line in the world. Cheap, trashy. Have a good time though if that’s what you are into. Next time try Norweigen. Lol, make sure you get that life boat drill early in the trip, you never know. Maybe that’s why it is called Miracle. It is a miracle every time it docks.

  • Shea Holmes

Actually I have been on the Norwegian Sky and the Norwegian Pearl out of Miami, your right Norwegian is a nicer cruise. But for a short cruise Carnival is not bad.Life Boat drill good Idea after all I believe the Italian ship was a Carnival cruise.
