Why is Amici Stopping Traffic on Gerritsen Avenue?

Updated: 7:32 am

During a fundraising event at Amici’s this past weekend, party goers setup what appeared to be vehicle checkpoint. They were aggressively panhandling - stopping cars along Gerritsen suggesting people give money for cancer.

Many people starting contacting the website this past Sunday about problems in front of amici’s and when we went up to check it out. We confirmed that the bikers setup a vehicle checkpoint and they were being very aggressive.

Through the strategic use of cones and bodies, southbound traffic (into Gerritsen Beach) had no choice to stop at the checkpoint when someone would flag, wave, or literally stand in front of traffic. At that point they would ask for money for cancer. Although it seemed festive, many felt like it was meant to be an intimating shakedown as it was bikers stopping your car. If a vehicle did not stop, slow or give money members at the checkpoint would yell or make motions to try and kick the car. At one point during the day there was a line of cars to Channel Avenue.

No idea why they thought they could stop traffic, but i’m sure everyone has lots of opinions. What do you think of what took place this weekend?

They do not have a right to stop anybody. I cut through the courts so not be to stopped a third time.

Do your own fundraiser not involving stopping traffic.

Loud music and motorcycles. Not to mention a tatoo parlor and “lounge.”

    Whats next?

  • anon

They have no right to stop all the cars. This is an outrage. Where are the cops? Where is the permit to block cars? I kept driving and they almost jumped in front of my car. They were screaming at me. I cut through the courts the next time.

  • Anonymous

Who is accounting for the money collected?

  • heres an idea

Turn a negative into a positive. Have the bikers from Amici direct traffic when the kids are going to & leaving school.

    • Anonymous

Here’s a another good idea.. Have them ride the Avenue on Halloween and instead of stopping cars stop all the not my kids who insist on vandalizing the neighborhood

      • enough!

@Anonymous: This comment actually made me laugh out loud!! Of course it has so many dislikes, no one wanted to hear that it was GB kids destroying the neighborhood then, and they sure don’t want to hear it NOW.

the kids in this neighborhood is a shame.. I cant believe their parents let them destroy the beach

Good idea or when they have. Soccer

Where are the cops when a biker gang tries and intimidates people into “donating” money for cancer. I almost ran over the stupid women with her bucket. Next time maybe I will. And I do donate money to legitimate organizations not half-@ss low life bike gangs. Get a job losers!

    • Anonymous

Many years ago when King Rudy was Mayor the courts ruled panhandling was not illegal. If you remember the city had to pay some big bucks out to panhandlers they chased, harassed and arrested

    • anon

Maybe they should use a squeegee like other thugs. That is what they acted like.

    • enough!

@Anonymous: Running over women and their stupid buckets? You are a CLASS act!! WTG big man!! Your parents must be SO proud!!

    • Anon

@Anonymous: I guess its OK that your kid goes out in the middle of traffic with a plastic bucket collecting for “baseball donations”

      Hello Anonymous People,

The only punks on this site are the ones hiding behind a computer screen posting unfair bullshit. If there is a problem with the Bikers hanging out in the beach why don’t you Anonymous people come over and talk to these Bikers & speak your mind. Maybe if you got to know these Bikers you would see they work real jobs, own businesses and have families that they take care of just like every other person who is not a Biker. If stopping traffic for a cancer fundraiser is such a bad thing I could only imagine how you Anonymous people feel about real criminals.

They are getting annoying stopping cars, one even put there arm out to stop me for a donation as I drove by!

Just look at what the Avenue is looking like tattoo parlors, motorcycle hangouts, maybe these are not bad people but it does not look good … sorry .

BTW anyone notice how many medical places ( not including Dr’s office ) have opened on the Avenue. Legitimate or not ?

    • enough!

@anonymous11: WOW, he put his arm out? You must have been petrified!! REALLY? This is intimidating?? You people make me laugh!!

      • anonymous11

Intimidated, petrified, NOOO I don’t think so but I did almost hit the guy

Maybe it was you standing in the street waving your arms looking like a jerk that’s why you are feeling so upset about this

    • Gerritsen beach neighbor sick of the fast drivers

what about the kids in this area??? lets be honest they are a bunch of punks who hang out on the ave.. drive fast, walk out in front or your car & find it funny? or how about some of the adults who are clearly drunk driving in the beach… seriously when did we become white trash?? I remember when I was younger people who lived here were called beach rats.. I think now the way the attitudes are around here its now hood rats.. wow such a nice place to live in ruined by the trash & their punk kids..

  • bill d

ou people are real assholes.theyare trying to raise money for a good cause!!!!

    • Anonymous

Pissing off the whole neighborhood is not a good way to raise money. Why don’t they try a legitimate fund raiser?

      • Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker

        @Anonymous:
This was a legitamit fundraiser. Why don’t you ask for the name of the institution ?

        • anon

They still have no right to stop traffic. Internal affairs should be called. This was ignored. Great job again 61.

          • anon

Hey 61st, are you ever going to do anything about the high stakes poker game in the back room of Amici? The entire neighborhood knows about it. I hope internal affairs reads this board. Maybe that is what the fund raiser was for.

          • Anonymous

@anon: the back room of Amicis? You mean where the pool table and dartboards are?

          • enough!

@anon: NO one STOPPED traffic… they were standing on the median. If traffic was stopped, it was because someone was looking in their wallet for money to donate, NOT because anyone was FORCED to stop!!

    • Anonymous

@bill d: there are plenty of better ways to raise money that doesn’t make those donating feel intimidated.

      • Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker

        @Anonymous:
Really Bill D ? You use to ride motorcycles and support the bikers. Wow

      • anon

No, not where the dart board is. It is in the building next to Amici’s that they also own. They enter through the back of Amicis. This is where the high stakes poker game is.

        • Anonymous

@anon: It is dangerous to other peoples welfare to post about a “so called high stakes game” I am reasonably sure there are a few degenerates that read here and it reall would be horrible if one of them decided to show up at the bar to rob a game that isn’t there… and HURT someone because of misinformation.

          • anon

It is not misinformation and there was a robbery attempt already.

          • Anonymous

@Anonymous: It is not misinformation? And you know this because “everyone knows” right? That is called gossip, not information.
So why don’t you think before you say something that could get someone hurt because you people love gossip!

        • Anonymous

Cash in your empty beer cans, maybe I’ll get you in the game/ idiot.

          • Anonymous

This is the real problem with Amicis. You open a questionable business in the neighborhood and then try and look down upon the residents. Your nothing but a bunch of lowlife crimminals looking for a quiet place to set up your illegal operations behind the front of a legit business. Nothing new about that, lots of cimminals have done that before, but you are making a huge mistake by insulting and alienating the residents here. Take for example the assertion above that there are so many closed up storefronts on the Ave. Not true. There are 3 or 4. In this economy, in an isolated neighborhood with little foot traffic, that’s really not bad. And in the end, I’m sure that most would agree, empty storefronts are preferable to organized crime.

        • Gerritsen beach neighbor sick of the fast drivers

who cares?? is it taking money our of your pocket??????
lets fix the issues of the punk kids in the beach.. or are you one of those who think that their kid is an angel??

oh wait what about all the double parked cars blocking traffic at the pizzeria or the karate place??? noo they aren’t doing anything wrong or how about the bar 2 blocks down which the beach kids hang out in?? noo they are angels too wake up the beach is a disaster because of the kids & the young adults, its disgusting I am not proud to say I live here anymore its as bad as the projects

  • UnknownN

dont stop the car for these clowns. if they kick the car as it passes, just have them arrested for criminal mischief(have a cellphone camera ready). the 61 pct should be contacted so they can write summonses for disorderly conduct(blocking vehicular traffic).

  • former resident

Perhaps if they sponsored a neighborhood event, people would feel better about donating..not some checkpoint shakedown.
    That’s just intimidating and wrong.

    • Anonymous

@former resident: There were 2 wonderful fundraisers this passed weekend. One for Breast Cancer that is a fantastic yearly event that raises many thousands of dollars. The other was a collection run by the VFW. Both events were well attended and people clearly give from their hearts. We don’t need to be shaken down by thugs in the street to be charitable. We have a great history of stepping up to help each other as well as the greater good. I don’t think that I have ever seen a ‘donated by Amici’ sign on any raffle etc. for other events. Do they support any GB causes/teams/clubs etc?

    • Anonymous

@former resident: did the event take place in GB? Then it was a neighborhood event! It was well advertised and if you chose not to be involved, that doesn’t make it less than anyone elses event

  • gb resident

the business is obvoiusly like most (not all ) residents of GB. They feel they can do as they darn well please. Rules and common courtesy do not apply to them.

  • Anonymous

Harassment! People should file a complaint against them!!!

  • on the ave

I do disagree with the manner that the solicitations took place. I can see people feeling as if it was a shakedown. The bar for the most part has been quiet. Perhaps a revision of how they handle fund raising would change the perspective of some residents and it would be in their best interest to pay attention to the comments here. Also I think it is unfair to group the tattoo parlor with the motor club. Granted many bikers have tats. But I’ve not seen a single minion in Wylde chyld since it opened

  • Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker

Are you people kidding me ? #1 This was a cancer fundraiser and if anyone is concerned where the money went why don’t you ask ? I did.
#2 The bikers would love to do a Gerritsen Beach fundraiser at Amici’s to help but they are tired of being slammed all the time on the web. Why don’t all you concerned Beach Natives ask for help or support ? You all will be very surprised how nice these guys are who all wear leather.
#3 As far as stopping traffic to ask for donations. The ladies stopping traffic where very polite and worked really hard all day for a good cause. Yes, maybe once in a while there was a nasty remark made to a driver that tried to run them down or a driver that was speeding while people where crossing the street. Have you ever tried to cross Gerritsen Ave ? I have and it is like crossing the Belt Parkway. So thank you bikers for worrying about the peoples safety.
#4 Who cares about the Tattoo Parlor ? The owner of the Tattoo Parlor is a real nice guy and would also get involved with Gerritsen Beach activities. Why don’t you ask ? I did.
#5 Let’s talk about the killing a few weeks ago ? Oh, I forgot that was swept under the rug.
#6 Let’s talk about maybe putting speed bumps on the Aveune to slow down the traffic.
#7 Let’s talk about teenage intervention to help underaged kids to stop drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
#8 Let’s talk about maybe Gerritsen Beach security. So far this year my car was broken into 3 times. The last breakin was to steel my inspection sticker. Are you kidding me ? Sticker $35 and window $300.
#9 How about filling up all the empty stores on the Avenue ? It looks like the area has been condemned.
Are you people kidding me ? This list can go on for days. Guys and girls there is so many other issues that need addressing. Leave the bikers and Amici’s alone.

      i@Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker:

I could not agree more… Im a new beach brat.. and I love it here… everyones always complaining… they should try living in the ghetto (projects) for a few weeks.. I bet they would appreciate the S@#%t !! out of GB…

Gerritsen Beach is beautiful.. but I could do without the lil young ones thinking they’re gansta..

I love the bikes and the tattoo shop… I got quite a few tats myself.. but you would look at me and not think that I am an accountant.. and have been for 12yrs…

But its common knowledge, people will always find something to complain about… they have no idea whats going on in the real world.. living in GB is cake !!!

      • Gerritsen beach neighbor sick of the fast drivers

The beach with these kids is becoming the ghetto.. they have no regard for the people that live here.. some of their parents do not care… there was a murder at a bar the “BEACH” people go to not the bikers.. they drive like its the Indy 500 with their dirt bikes & cars.. they dont care at all about this community. Its a shame it really is to see the potential of this area & have it ruined by the kids & young adults who live here

    • Anonymous

@Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker: you sound like an idiot! If every panhandler was allowed to stop traffic the city would be gridlocked!

      • Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker

        @Anonymous:
Panhandling. It was a fundraiser and maybe if you were not driving like a speed racer they would have said nothing to you. Oh, maybe you could not read the signs that said slow down that were posted in the street.

        • Anonymous

@Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker: Oo you mean the signs that they also illegally put in the street. I should of ran them and the signs over they had no right being in the street in the first place.

          • Anonymous

@Anonymous: let me get this straight… it is socially unacceptable for bikers to raise money for children with terminal illnesses, however you consider it socially acceptable to talk about running over women and children? WTF is WRONG with you people??

          • enough!

@Anonymous: and of course you people disliked that comment. There were women AND CHILDREN standing in the street… so I am guessing you think it would have been okay to run them over?
And another thing the only time traffic was actually stopped was to cross children so they could play in the fields… since none of you seem to understand a speed limit or a LIFE.

          • Anonymous

@enough!: Maybe women and children just shouldn’t have been standing in the street

    • Anonymous

@Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker: Yeh “the ladies were really nice” when she yelled at me and tried to kick my car cuz I didnt stop for her panhandling.

    • anonymous11

@Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker: You are right about Gerritsen Avenue being like the Belt parkway, since they made the street one lane in each direction. The city really screwed up traffic on the Avenue what used to be a smooth ride has become a maze of going around double parked cars and trying to get accross a steady stream of one lane traffic in each direction.

    • Anonymous

Well said. And I love to stop by Amicis for an after dinner drink..it is a beautiful bar inside.

  • Gerritsen Beach Native & Biker

Gerritsen Beach. Let’s ask for help when it comes to Gerritsen Beach activities. Ask do not assume.

I would like to thank everyone who came down to support us. @gene: @gene: Gene, it appears you are confusing Amici with Bantry… but its okay, we will just assume that you are severely lacking in intelligence… perhaps one of the bikers can loan you a helmet so you don’t hurt yourself trying to string together a sentence

      • mike d

@gene: @gene: Gene, oh Gene, I have been to that “junkie bar” many times. Not only have I not seen any junkies, I have also not seen anyone so out of control because of alcohol consumption. Fact is, I am a very well educated man, and I do very well for myself; I have not seen anything remotely offensive at this bar. Before assuming what is inside based on what is parked outside, take your head out of your ass and look inside for yourself. You may be shocked to find out that you are wrong. Frankly, I’m not shocked.

        • Anonymous

@mike d: Mike, Gene doesn’t live in the Beach, that’s why he has no idea what bar we are talking about. You Amici people all have to understand that MANY of the comments made here are made by TROLLS that live in Shitshead Bay and come here to get their jollies ripping apart our kids, neighborhood and anything else. Joke of it is they sit around the bars in SB and try and look down on us while people are being mugged, murdered, teens are vandalizing the train stations, there are mountains of garbage piled up on street corners. Maybe if they got out of our business they would have time to do something about their own crumbling neighborhood.

        • gene

@mike d: you have not seen anyone out of control because of alcohol??? these idiots were harassing people in the street with their fake fundraiser. i call that out of control. obviously these are your friends since you admit to going to that junkie bar, so you will defend them.

@Irish Kevin: “In Great Britain and many of its former colonies, “judgement” is still the correct spelling, but ever since Noah Webster decreed the first E superfluous, Americans spelled it Judgment” Oh look JUDGEMENT is the correct spelling everywhere else… and it is still accepted as the correct spelling in America, however, Americans also use judgment.

judgement – an opinion formed by judging something

Merriam-Webster prefers judgment and lists judgement as a variant.

judgement is the form sanctioned in the Revised Version of the Bible
So, I guess your spelling opinions are also wrong, as well as your JUDGEMENTS

So what you are saying is the murder doesn’t make the beach look bad?? The kids driving down the ave 50mph not look bad or how many accidents have we had on the ave due to what?? oh wait the beach residents or the flashing lights near the school because of who driving past the school fast?? was it the bikers or your neighbor?? I have to say its really amazing the crap that goes on from our very own beach residents that people look past as soon as you see someone that appear to be bad & they are castrated but all I see is the Trash that drives down the ave or hang out at the bar.. the guy who comes home from work parks his car & is clearly drunk and they go in their home which is located in Gerritsen beach

Ur comment is completely right. The Editor loves to see people trashed nd trashing our neighborhood. It’s how the lonely boy gets attention. He’s actually a wimp he hides behind things instead of saying it to someones face. Does anyone think that he has the guts to come up to Amicis nd say anything to one of the bikers never. He also loves to trash the teenagers. But u have a few individuals that join his circus nd make Beachers look bad. The best thing that could happen for gerritsen beach would be for him to move out. Believe me bikers I grew up with him nd he will never come within ur reach. He hides like a rat.

@GerritsenBeach.net: Well that would explain why your website has become a place to sling mud instead of a place to get news… great attitude for a reporter. I am frankly unimpressed.

          • GerritsenBeach.net

@GerritsenBeach.net: It didn’t start that way and frankly it was because I didnt have enough readers. I really think it changed is because more and more people are reading the site and they have opinions that want to be heard. I haven’t run the numbers but usually over 90% of people read and don’t comment and less than 10% comment. I’m not sure if you follow other news sites but the comments generally have the same tone of contempt and mud slinging.

This story was news it happened and judging by the reactions some were pretty angry, and if all I can offer someone is a small place to vent then so be it.

          • Anonymous

@GerritsenBeach.net: To each their own… I prefer a more positive approach to handling community problems. The tone you started off this article set the tone for the commentors. You even titled it why is AMICI stopping traffic?
My points are 1. Amici is a bar and cafe… if someone asks to hold a benefit there, the bar is not responsible for how it is handled… the bar was the location… if things had not gone as planned at the breast cancer benefit, would you have blamed the FIELD?
            2. Why ask a question that you could have found out the answer to very simply…
            3. Why allow people to bash the hell out of Amici all the time? There are very few problems there.
Wyld Chyld gets the same treatment and I haven’t seen any problems there either.
Why doesn’t the community back the community? It is a much more proactive stance… back the businesses you HAVE, get to know the owners, they are really nice people and would more than likely willingly help with community events!

          • GerritsenBeach.net

@GerritsenBeach.net: Your first point makes sense on the surface. but any establishment is responsible for the image they present and are responsible for what goes on during their events. I’ve been to enough meetings and read through enough documentation. For example If a Bar had fights all of the time outside of it and people lingering about, it would create a bad image. Sometimes enough for the city or state liquor authority to step in.

I’m not sure what question you wanted me to ask. I’m sure a “whats going on here” would of went over real well.

your absolutely right amici and wyld chyld get crap tossed their way for no reason sometimes. I have met both owners and they are nice people.

      • Anonymous

@GerritsenBeach.net: You should really think about getting glasses if you think what you saw was a little off. What you saw were people celebrating the life of someone they loved and lost, and trying to help others while doing so. You need a life dude, and maybe then you would stop interfereing in others.

@Sick of the trashing of GB: accidents happen to people all the time”,don’t let your mouth get in the way of common sense,,,it could lose teeth,,,if. Ur lucky

      • D- Beach resident sick of the neighbors who ruin the area

that comment makes the club look bad.. it shows them that they are right..

don’t give in to them & make them right

    • rico

@Sick of the trashing of GB: seriously. Dan post the things that actually take place in the area. The problem is if its something negative about someone then those affected are up in arms because they get outed. Fact is if you don’t want to end up on this site in a negative way then don’t do anything negative. You can’t have a fundraiser and force people to donate and kick cars and yell when they don’t. No matter how u slice it forcing people to pay and illegally stopping traffic is extortion. Just because its a great cause don’t mean you have a right to do it. Hold it at Larry v or across in The fields and I assure you that you will have a great turnout and the residents will have nothing to complain about

    • Ray

The other nite after this comment about trashing our neighborhood with the help of Dan and his website. Dan himself had posted a comment that he would meet this person and he got very defensive. Amazing Dan can embarrass and have his negative say about people and things. When in reality your negative feelings towards him got the better of him. I myself would love to know why he removed his attacking comment. I guess he realized he showed his true colors and the people in GB would actually realize what he’s truly like.

    • GerritsenBeach.net

@Sick of the trashing of GB: I am not hiding, my name is on the site, what more would you like? This site posts both the good and bad. If I grew up with you and I am not longer associated with you, it may of been for a reason. :)

  • new beach brat

all this complaining and bashing… all a bunch of cheap self absorbed snobs..

if your mom had cancer you wouldn’t be complaining…

great job amici’s and all the supporters..

  • Mel H

Wow…drama, drama, drama. This is worst then day time soaps. Everyone has something to complain, someone to bash and the best thing is that they do it anonymously. Grow balls and put your name to your comments. Gb is a great community and many try and do good by it….others hide behind their ignorance. A comment on a website goes as far as those who actually take the time to respond. Now, there is always something that will always piss GB residents, it could be an old lady suffering from mental illness walking up to you and asking you for a dollar, it could be your kids exposed as the rotten apples or the honor student who has too much scholarship money….but if it bothers you so much, atleast grow balls and put your name up. Maybe stopping by and donating a dollar to a good cause is not your cup of coffee, but a dollar goes a long way to helping someone..if you dont like it, show your true colors but grow balls to put your name behind your stupid comments.

    • Blow Me

@Mel H: Put your name here so the bikers can come smash your windows. Good idea Mel “H” lol

      • Mel H

@Blow Me: personally, i do not have an issue with them….they stick to themselves and have fundraisers…wow, so intimidating. I wish I was in the area so I could have donated.

    • anonymous11

@Mel H: If people had to put their name on it, the truth probably would not be told.

Who cares about names I am more interested in the truth.

      • enough!

@anonymous11: However, you are not getting truth… you are getting people’s judgements. I am so sure that a 16 year old girl asking for donations with a bucket felt like a shakedown. If you wanted truth, you should have come to the benefit and ASKED.

        • enough!

@enough!: And Danny honestly if you were there watching, why didn’t YOU come over and ask some questions and find out what was going on and why? There were fliers up for weeks ahead of time… and it was well publicized on facebook.

        • Anonymous

@enough!: There were only two girls with buckets collecting money. One was 4’10″ in height and the other girl was 16 of age. Now how intimidating is that. Those that feel like a shakedown.

          • Kate

@Anonymous: As I said in a separate comment I had no problems passing but I was approached by a man & a woman each of the times I drove past. They were both dressed in biker wear & slightly intimidating to look at but there was no 4’10″ girl & no 16 year old girl.

Maybe each of the times I passed the girls were on break. :/

          • anon

What about the guys next to them?

          • Anonymous

@Anon: The guys next to them were just GUYS!! Did their leather freak you out? Are you scared of the cows the leather came from? Honestly what is your PROBLEM???

          • ANON.

@Anonymous: next year, there will only be the girls doing the collections,we will keep the guys off to the side to help with traffic, and between now and then figure a way out to keep traffic flowin for those who do not wish to stop/donate-or get stuck in a traffic jam….

          • Kate

@Anonymous: Great job to start planning now. Perhaps take into account all the feedback you have gotten. Maybe publicize the event int he neighborhood better. I walk all over the place & didn’t see a single sign, flyer, nothing or maybe I would have attended your event & not just been annoyed at the panhandling & traffic jams.

    • Anon

@Mel H: Mel H…u must have some pair! Telling us to grow balls and post our names and who are you? Oh yeah, Mel H…..same as anonymous idiot.

  • ...blow who?!

You’re right ‘blow me’ ! Put up your name, and get your window smashed in…chances are though, that your window will be broken from a rock-throwing GB punk kid, before it will come from the bikers..lol

I’m with Mel H on this one

  • lol

    Q) Whats the difference between a Harley, and a Hoover???

    A) The Location of the Dirtbag. =)

  • ANON.

mayby the girls doing the collecting were a little aggressive, but the cause/intention was good.not everyone is polished and smooth, but some thinks should/could be overlooked, they did collect alot of money for breast cancer.if there means were a little rough, the job of raising money was compleated…if it was for your family/or cause you would’nt be so fast to critisize them.

    • Anonymous

@ANON.: breast cancer? Ithought they said it was for children with cancer. Which is it? The breast cancer fundraiser was down on LV field. Unrelated to the Amici shakedown fundraiser.

    • D- Beach resident sick of the neighbors who ruin the area

I have to say I am for the bikers I know they are doing a good job But in all honesty if you want more money… sugar is sweeter & gets your more a smile a hey how are you gets you more donations then anything else.. Bikers don’t scare me hell you bleed like I bleed you drive a bike and wear leather that’s the difference… BUT the women should be nicer it will get help HELL ill come down and smile & be friendly asking for donations. And I know your guys are working but maybe they should stand more away from the girls but I think if everyone was nicer smiled hey please donate to a good cause not standing there kinda looking not happy.. PS I am rough around the edges but when I need to I throw the charm on its all about presentation.. the community needs to see it once they do they will lighten up

  • Anonymous

Wouldn’t suprise me if the city put a light in front of the bar for pedestrians so they can stop traffic easier.

  • Beach M

Seriously. Why the F does the tattoo shop always get brought up? People are always slamming it on here yet, there has not been ONE incident involving them. Your hate is the fuel to the problems in our community.

  • Terrible Andy

And don’t forget who not only trashed our community last Halloween, but also back lashed, threatened and vandalized Dan’s house. It wasn’t the big bad bikers or the tattooed people, it was you. The people who claim to be the community, who come on here and judge everyone behind a computer screen.

  • enough!

Hey Danny, how about you write an article about the dirtbikes that zoom up and down the avenue popping wheelies non stop? That is a death waiting to happen… maybe that is something “the concerned citizens” need to know about… or is that one of those things that doesn’t matter until someone dies?

  • Kate

I drove by the event with no problem. One time when I tried to pass, cars were backed way up so I went through the courts instead.

In general I have a problem with all people who stop cars to ask for money for their cause and call it a fundraiser. If you want me to participate in your fundraising event, then invite me. Don’t ask me for money as I drive past it.

  • Gbres

Heres the bottom line, those guys n gals could have been handing out candy it would not have made a difference…they are a biker gang, people are intimadated by them, that is how they do bussiness. They may have been overly agressive at times, but they did get the job done.Lets be real with a name like Devil’s Minions what would you expect.

  • Annonymous

Sorry it is such a shame that for it being such a legitimate and serious cause that there was any negative about it. I agree that stopping cars anywhere is wrong and creating traffic to anyone who is coming or going to work is wrong. The people who were doing this lost someone very near and dear to Cancer and would like to stop this terrible disease, but I do understand that creating traffic and aggressively asking and or demanding donations is wrong. I wish people would just get back to being people again! If you lost someone and had this much influence what would you do?

  • Annonymous

I have a great question so should Amicis just get a permit to close down the whole street during charitable functions or set up traffic safety cones and request donations? There should be no problem in shutting down the Avenue being that the community has done it for less reasons than a benifit to Cancer.

  • Anonymous

Comment 100 doesn’t have an opinion on anything. It’s just here wasting your time.

  • Anonymous

The sad part it was for a good cause but as usual everyone here turns it into Halloween, the school and anything else they can think of. Yes they are bikers and they do have alot of fundraisers and maybe they went about it the wrong way , but its no different then when you are stopped and there is a team raising money asking for help, or the beggers in the street that come up to you. I understand that everyone here has a problem with Amici’s not really sure actually eveeryone here has a problem with everything actually I mean it was a fundraiser and you are calling it a shakedown. What would giving even a dollar do to you people, maybe you have been lucky enough to never have cancer, cystic fibrosis or any other diesase or sickness that they raise money for touch your life and thats why it bothers you or because you had to stop your busy life for 10 seconds for the so called biker shakedown. life is too short for all you bitter people. They don’t close down the whole street they simply were asking for donations im surprised there are such complaits during the GB game, the block party at the court club or the Dan 5k race all it does it inconvience people for 2 mins of thier life so get over or take the courts you know when and what is going on so instead of everyone in a hurry to get nowhere you’ll have to stop at the stop signs instead of fly down the ave.

    • anon

Those events get permits. They also don’t stop, or try to stop cars. Get a permit next time.

    • Kate

@Anonymous: “What would giving even a dollar do to you people, maybe you have been lucky enough to never have cancer, cystic fibrosis or any other diesase or sickness that they raise money for touch your life and thats why it bothers you or because you had to stop your busy life for 10 seconds for the so called biker shakedown”

Really? You have no idea what anyone supports or what any of their personal problems are. You don’t know what charities I support & in what way. You don’t know what diseases I or my family have. You want to ask for help with your fundraising then ask for help but don’t insult people. Be grateful to those who give & gracious to those who don’t. I drove by several times & not 1 time did the men thrusting a cup in my car window say “Could you help us? We are collecting money for XYZ.”

Gerritsen Beach residents come together all the time to raise money for all sorts of things. The same day there was a huge turnout at the ball fields for a Breast Cancer event and no one is complaining about that. If you do things the right way and get the community involved you might be surprised.

So many negative people live here now.

  • Irish Kevin

It is truly amazing how many posters here cannot spell. May I add such phrases as “You’re right ‘blow me’ ! ,judgemental douchebags, Seems to be the language used by the New Beach Residents who wonder why people call them low lives. They call it Regression… that is exactly what is happening.! BTW now this is Judgmental !!

  • Kelly D

Being that everyone is so upset about the way these wanna be tough guy Bikers were trying to put the arm on People on the avenue. They call it collecting for a good cause..lets assume that was the intent..however the execution sucked. These types think by acting in the manner they did they will intimidate people into contributing.Well guess what people you all let them open there so called Biker hangout without objection and same for the tatoo parlor..These places truly depict the skid of the Beach as a family oriented neighborhood. These punks need to be sent packing and their sleeze holes closed down. The people of the Beach need to take their neighborhood back. Show up at the GBPOA Meetings, get in touch with the community board and see what can be done to turn the Beach back into a neighborhood for families not thugs.or should I say wanna be thugs.

    • Mr. Murphy

@Kelly D: I agree Kelly these Punks need to go,we need more of a Family enviorment than a sleeze ball low life enviorment. I hear they could get cheap rent on Brighton Beach Ave LOL.The Russians would run these wanna be tough guys out of Dodge in a minute. The Russians have balls.

    • boy are you ignorant

@Kelly D: let me start by saying that he way contributions were collected was wrong. And I’m sure the next event will be held differently. But to group all of them with some stupid stereotype is just plain ignorance. And your ignorance really shines thru by including the tattoo parlor in your rant. You talk promoting family and family oriented, the owner is often outside with his family. Children included. If such devious things were taking place how come you don’t hear anything going on over there? And really what can u say about the bar besides the way they handled a fundraiser? The bikes are loud? There is a high stakes card game in back? Oooo hide your children someone may get a papercut from a wild 6 of heart’s. Educate yourself before you pick up the first stone. We have other bars on the Ave with more “documented” problems then Amichi or Wylde chyld

      • Irish Kevin

@boy are you ignorant: Now this is really Funny,Just because the Kids as you put it are outside its Family Oriented ??? Judging from your Post I gather you are a supporter of these establishments. To each his/her own.I would prefer a Whole Foods.

    • Spelling and Punctuation Police

@Kelly D: Another person who is anti-tattoo, yet can’t spell it! YOU GO GIRL!! Take your undereducated self right back to school!
You should never stereotype and make assumptions… like my assumption that you are not so smart… bet you don’t like it, do you?
Hate to break this fact to you, okay really I don’t hate it, but a lot of those “thugs” are FROM GB.
There and their, are actually 2 different words in case you didn’t know.
What exactly is “the skid of the beach”?
There are so many things wrong with your post, it actually gave me a headache to read it!
You know what? Never mind… I would hate for you to exert yourself trying to type a reply.

      • Kelly D

@Spelling and Punctuation Police: Now that the spelling and English lesson is over and noted. Another wonder with no balls posting with a contrived name. It is truly amazing that the pro Amichi posters are either afraid to put their names on the posts or just don’t care about the neighborhood.I guess the only comeback you could think of was to correct my spelling and grammer.Like I said before you gutless people removed my post Close these dumps down. BTW policeman LOL!!! Have a nice day in you little world. My next post will be in texting format.

      • Mr. Murphy

@Spelling and Punctuation Police: That’s the best you got? Kelly is right many of you posters are lacking Balls! Take a lesson from our neighbors in Brighton Beach and Boro Park. They would send these Punks packing,if these jerks were real Biker’s they would be down in the East Village with the real men. These Punnks are just a bunch of “Wanna Bs” with nothing better to do than hangout on the Avenue and act tough. What a Joke .I laugh every time I drive by these places.Better yet many of you Idiots are intimadated by them..

    • D- Beach resident sick of the neighbors who ruin the area

you apparently haven’t seen the kids who hang out on the avenue or is it one of yours & you are too blinded by the beach punks who live here?

I lived her for over 10 yrs & it has changed for the worse & it is due to the kids & young adults who are not a biker

take your glasses off & take a good look

WELL it seems when someone posts a different opinion the post is blocked out (Hidden). Whats the problem afraid someone might get offended. Kelly is entitled to her opinion. Just like the supporters of these so called Bikers are.

  • anon

I noticed one of the categories Dan listed this segment under was crime. This is fitting, because crimes were committed, but the 61 ignored them. Next time everybody driving on the Ave should call 911.

  • Spelling and Punctuation Police

@Irish Kevin: Are they bikers or aren’t they? Proper punctuation might make your posts more legible… that is just a suggestion though.

    • Heynonnynonny

@Spelling and Punctuation Police: You forgot the comma before “though.”

      though (adverb)

      1. However; nevertheless
Ex: Snow is not predicted; we can expect some rain, though.

      2. Informal Used as an intensive
Ex: Wouldn’t that beat all, though?

Good cause/poor execution case closed. Can we all act civil and just request amici’s rethink they’re fund raising next year?

  • anon

I don’t stop for them and I do not ride through the courts. I have every right to go up or down Gerritsen Avenue without being stopped by anyone except law enforcement and they are never around… I give to the Salvation Army who take care of people in need, all races and religions without prejudice…..

    • Anonymous

I think this is the whole issue. The avenue is now one lane in & an out. I don’t need to be stopped by anybody unless there is an emergency. Have fundraisers, we are a generous community. Make it clear who, what, why,the cause is for & you don’t need to stop people, they will come to you. Stop people on the way home from work or on their way someplace with bullying tactics does not work.

  • Sick of your crying

Does anyone know the story about the Hells Angels/ Gerritsen beach residents fight from the 60′s or 70′s…?

    • anonymous11

      @Sick of your crying:

      Yes I remember that.
I recall hearing that one of the Hells Angels was very badly hurt . I remember men waiting on the avenue for them to return but they never did.

What happened to the old Gerritsen Beach, we were fighters!

      • Beachwalker

@anonymous11: They weren’t Hells Angels, though. (S&P Police, notice the comma!) They were called The Rat Pack. It all started when they beat up a couple of teenagers from Park End that went back weeds, probably to see what the Rat Pack were up to back there. Unfortunatly for The Rats, they didn’t realize that these kids had BIG brothers, and lots of friends. It culminated into huge fight at the end of the Ave. No guns, just fists, clubs, chains, etc. That guy wasn’t badly hurt. He was dead. Before he died he spit in the face of the priest from Resurrection that had been called to give him the Last Rites, being that we were still a good Catholic neighborhood they gave him that chance to make good at his end. And no, they never did come back.

  • beach bum

remember it well, they were making porn movies on the beach back weeds, people got together and went after them with 2x4s the police had to protect them and escort them away, all the time vowing to return they never did. but maybe they are sneaking back to the beach.

  • beach bum

dear beachwalker, thats some story you came up with. i really like the part about the priest.

  • Jo

I love Amici’s and I love the people that I know from there. However, when I drove by several times that day, I WAS forced to stop. Everytime I passed, someone stood in front of my car. I donated each and every time. I also witnessed what happened to people who didn’t stop. I saw them get yelled at, have things thrown at them, and have their cars kicked. Maybe they didn’t have the cash? Maybe they donated the first 2 times they passed that day? Really, is this the right approach?? It has nothing to do with Amici’s or “bikers”. I do not need to be forced, or harrassed and neither does anyone else. If women and children were in the streets, I don’t care how “nice” they are, they’re being put at risk. As a mother, I wouldn’t have my child in the street. For any cause. I applaud Amici’s and their fundraiser, but It should have been kept on the sidewalk. Period.

    • Anonymous

It will be better organized next year.thanks,amicis.

    • D- Beach resident sick of the neighbors who ruin the area

I agree with you… I have no issues with the bikers or the bar.. but the women should be nicer and not so angry I drove by & was like wtf.. This is for the Devils Minions you have to be fair and admit that maybe I know if people spoke to you they can see you are nice BUT some do stand there looking like they hate the world.. I am not saying its a mean scary look its just not a friendly look or a nice hello.. I think that is what is giving everyone a bad impression & again I have no issues with the bikers I know a few from different clubs & one from yours and I know you guys most times have a serious face to outsiders.

white trash punks who live in our neighborhood who I fear will hit me or my dog walking the street or some stupid kid playing a game running in from of my car is intimidating.

Just Remember Don’t Judge a Book by it’s Cover!! We Don’t like people passing judgement on Us (GB) for a few bad Nuts,We Shouldn’t Pass Judgement on Others!!!!

  • Aggravated

@enough! But it wasn’t 16 year old girls in the street asking for money. It was grown men in the street trying to stop cars and when you did not stop they would make a notion as if they were going to kick your car! I am all for fundraisers but you do not stop traffic illegally and try to intimidate the driver into giving you money. You Could have placed signs around the neighborhood and informed everyone what you were raising money for! And I am sure you would have had a really nice turn out. I am one of “those people” of whom did not stop to give money and had a grown a$$ man jerk his leg out at my car like he was going to kick it! I do not appreciate it. And if you are going to use the excuse that I was speeding well guess again I am not one of the speed racers on the avenue I go the speed limit and stop to let people cross. And if you did have kids in the street holding the buckets shame on you!

    • Irish Kevin

Aggravated; I agree with you,I also have heard the same thing. These so called Bikers were trying to intimidate people with these type of gestures. Honestly what were they thinking ? I for one do not appreciate a grown man acting in that manner in our neighborhood. These Punks need to either act in a civil and peaceful manner or get out of the Beach.

  • anonymous

The bikers made a threat to come to the neighborhood and start trouble. If I remember correctly this was in the late 60′s or early 70,s. I believe the police were supportive of the neighborhood and set up a command post on Gerritsen Ave and the Vollies would use their horn to signal if there was a problem. I think a priest was involved in trying to give last rites to a biker. If anyone can add to my account of what happened, that would be great.

  • Anonymous

my opinion is that people want to criticize for no good reason…Bobby Marshall owns Amici’s and lives here in GB..he runs blood drives andfund raisers all the time….but becuase they are bikers they must be thugs…same with the tatoo parlor which always seems to come up…a local business that gives generously to every single event in GB…..above lots of good ideas on here about what we can do to imporove the neighborhood….stop running down people who do try to make a difference….and if people would support the business that are on the avenue, we wouldnt have empty stores….

  • Anonymous

it was the Prospects stopping the cars and informing the gang members of any pretty women and thier bra sizes..
