At last night’s 61 precinct community council meeting the 61 Precinct Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Georgios Mastrokostas flat out asked for our assistance to prevent another dangerous Halloween in Gerritsen Beach.
As explained at the meeting, the 61 precinct does not want Halloween to go down like it did last year. Councilman Lew Fidler and Property Owners President George Broadhead echoed that call and asked the Deputy Inspector to start forming a plan together. The Deputy Inspector did explain that the precinct has a finite amount of resources and that if the 61 was to deploy 6 cops to our area it would be a big deal. Although he has no problem doing that it would be taking away a decent amount of police resources and deploying them to our relativity low crime area, and secondly how effectively can those cops police the area without assistance from parents or a plan for the weeds?
Deputy Inspector Mastrokostas is asking for ideas: any idea. One idea is that some parents step up and police the area with the officers naming names and knocking on doors. The Deputy Inspector also going to request Sky Watch but the equipment could be in use else where in the city. He may also request a photo/video team to capture pictures and video on the police end they may be actionable.
There are meetings scheduled, plans are in the works, I wont go into much detail but they will be making arrests this year if it comes down to it.

The number one idea I have right now is for the police to not seek out the transit supervisor to ask if breaking bus windows is a crime. The transit supervisor said it was not because the transit authority already budgeted funds to replace broken Bus windows on Halloween so no action was taken by the police towards those perpetrators.
Like I said on this site last year the police have in their possession posting from these children on Facebook admitting they broke those windows. They also had in their possession photographs of these children holding and throwing projectiles.
If these children are not detained then the parents will never realize the full impact of what their children are doing. And when the parents have to make monetary restitution, then they will have the incentive to rein in their children on Halloween

The D.I. of the 61st pct attends a meeting in regards to a bunch of brats running amok in their own neighborhood and their parents think it’s OK because it’s Halloween and all he asks is for ideas. So far the five comments posted here have absolutely nothing to do with ideas to help on Halloween in GB. Everyone thinks they are funny with their little cute comments. How about you grow up and try to clear your head enough to come up with one idea, any idea. There were plenty of people telling the 61 pct what they did wrong last year so now what? Not fun anymore when you can’t criticize the D.I. for not showing up at a meeting, or criticizing the response of the pct. I have an idea…lets stop blaming others for the action of our own.

@Anon: here is an idea, Parents keep an eye on your children! Why do WE have to come up with ideas or have the police figure it out. If your a parent watch your own kids and we won’t have a problem. Instead of worrying about Halloween how about we come up with ideas to make the parents be responsible for their own children. So we have a peaceful Halloween night becasue every is watching, so what will the kids do? Wait till nobody is! Soon we will be having the same discussion on St paddys day or another holiday. This was not a special meeting by any means. This was a regularly scheduled meeting. The 61 precinct community council meets every month on the 2nd Wednesday. The community council is a non-partisan group which meets with police to exchange vews and seek ways to solve local problems. A small contingent of Gerritsen Beach people did go to discuss halloween.

What about patrolling the back weeds on quads or dirt bikes? I know it seems a bit far fetched but police seem to have difficulty obtaining anyone who go into the back weeds and it being a part of NYC the police should have access to it. They spend thousands of dollars operating a helicopter to patrol from the sky which goes no where because unless the perpetrator comes out from the back weeds thenn they cannot catch them. If this money was spent on off-road utility vehicles that could patrol this area then it may get somewhere. THE NYOD has cars, horses, boats, towers and planes. Why not dirt-bikes or quads?

GB Mom, One problem with patrolling the back weeds is if you do catch one or two kids and they resist, and you have to physically restrain them, they would probably bring you up on assault charges. A helicopter would be best since they have infrared camera’s and can see anyone hiding even in the thickest section of the weeds and direct the police on the ground to their exact location. Also, Gerritsen ave. is divided down the middle between the 61 and 63, if the run into the weeds the 63 would be responsible, if the run down the streets, the 61 is responsible.

This year we should form a citizens patrol armed with weapons and cameras to patrol the neighborhood, and another group to patrol the back weeds.
Any kid throwing eggs or damaging property should be arrested , and their parents should be arrested too and forced to pay for any damages.

If you are unfortunate enough to have to ride a bus or take a train for that matter at the end of the school day, I don’t care what school it is or what neighborhood it is in, you are going to hear the same stuff. Try the B44 at 2:30. It’s how teens are. It’s how they always have been. Lol, I remember how bad the city bus was coming home from 277 in the 70′s.! Same in JHS and HS. I’m sure that it was shocking to other people on the bus. Not every kid perhaps, and the language etc. is worse now than ever, but foul language is something that society as a whole accepts more now than ever before. Sometimes I can’t believe what I hear on TV now. And radio. The front page of the NYPost should be rated ‘R’ some days. Where do you think they get the things they say? I have the pleasure of riding the b31 everyday with these lovely children-most of whom are dressed in parochial school clothes.I wish their parents would ride the bus undercover just once to listen to the conversations and the way they harrass classmates and other bus riders-the very boys that seem to come up as a person of interest every time vile behavior occurs in the beach- saying disgusting things to girls -the girls they seem to consider less than desirable-who by the way are also dressed in the same st edmunds uniforms-in public school it would be called bullying and sexual harrasement and they would be suspended.
that being said-the comments are screamed across the bus and include the foulest language riddled with terms such as BL..J.B and F..k M. and all those wonderful things vile people say to those who are not popular-
and the girls who are obviously part of the popular club are just as vile.
Now, i would love to tell you that it’s not your kid to those who post here and defend their kids actions -especially last halloween-unfortunately-i can’t do that- i have personally witnessed on a daily basis-the sons and friends of the sons of the woman who posts on here act like the biggest as*h***s and morons on the planet.
I would advise these parents to wake the F up but i think based on the je*ko**s public behavior on a city bus where the bus driver actually has to intervene because of the discomfort level that occurs-EVERY DAY- for our neighbors such as myself who just want to get home after a long day at work, it really wouldn’t matter because it obviously stems from the home.
Perhaps the money you all are spending on this private education would be better spent on some therapy for these kids? I do believe your children are having an identity crisis-they use the N word and refer to themselves and each other as if they are young african american adults that are living in a rap video.

I say we start deploying police with VIDEO Cameras on certain corners. Afterwards they can post all videos on G.B.Net. This way all the parents can see their precious offspring in action.
