61 Precinct Ready and Willing are We? Prepping for a Gerritsen Beach Halloween

DSC_0553

At last night’s 61 precinct community council meeting the 61 Precinct Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Georgios Mastrokostas flat out asked for our assistance to prevent another dangerous Halloween in Gerritsen Beach.

As explained at the meeting, the 61 precinct does not want Halloween to go down like it did last year. Councilman Lew Fidler and Property Owners President George Broadhead echoed that call and asked the Deputy Inspector to start forming a plan together. The Deputy Inspector did explain that the precinct has a finite amount of resources and that if the 61 was to deploy 6 cops to our area it would be a big deal. Although he has no problem doing that it would be taking away a decent amount of police resources and deploying them to our relativity low crime area, and secondly how effectively can those cops police the area without assistance from parents or a plan for the weeds?

Deputy Inspector Mastrokostas is asking for ideas: any idea. One idea is that some parents step up and police the area with the officers naming names and knocking on doors. The Deputy Inspector also going to request Sky Watch but the equipment could be in use else where in the city. He may also request a photo/video team to capture pictures and video on the police end they may be actionable.

There are meetings scheduled, plans are in the works, I wont go into much detail but they will be making arrests this year if it comes down to it.

What are your ideas?

“Deputy Inspector Mastrokostas is asking for ideas: any idea.”
The number one idea I have right now is for the police to not seek out the transit supervisor to ask if breaking bus windows is a crime. The transit supervisor said it was not because the transit authority already budgeted funds to replace broken Bus windows on Halloween so no action was taken by the police towards those perpetrators.

Like I said on this site last year the police have in their possession posting from these children on Facebook admitting they broke those windows. They also had in their possession photographs of these children holding and throwing projectiles.

If these children are not detained then the parents will never realize the full impact of what their children are doing. And when the parents have to make monetary restitution, then they will have the incentive to rein in their children on Halloween

My suggestion is for you to do exactly the same as you did last year and see what, if any, is different about this year.

Because if it is different this year, doesn’t that mean something has been accomplished for all the non-bigoted members of the Gerritsen Beach? I refuse to succumb to calling people of this community names, but at the same time, I know I would never want to be around people like the bus driver lady or the bullying Mr. “horsesh*t.”

  • anon

That cop should go undercover as an Elvis impersonator for Halloween. No disrespect to the Police, just a joke.

  • Anon

The D.I. of the 61st pct attends a meeting in regards to a bunch of brats running amok in their own neighborhood and their parents think it’s OK because it’s Halloween and all he asks is for ideas. So far the five comments posted here have absolutely nothing to do with ideas to help on Halloween in GB. Everyone thinks they are funny with their little cute comments. How about you grow up and try to clear your head enough to come up with one idea, any idea. There were plenty of people telling the 61 pct what they did wrong last year so now what? Not fun anymore when you can’t criticize the D.I. for not showing up at a meeting, or criticizing the response of the pct. I have an idea…lets stop blaming others for the action of our own.

    • M

@Anon: here is an idea, Parents keep an eye on your children! Why do WE have to come up with ideas or have the police figure it out. If your a parent watch your own kids and we won’t have a problem. Instead of worrying about Halloween how about we come up with ideas to make the parents be responsible for their own children. So we have a peaceful Halloween night becasue every is watching, so what will the kids do? Wait till nobody is! Soon we will be having the same discussion on St paddys day or another holiday. I personally know two parents of kids involved in last years debacle, I assure you those kids wont be a problem this year. Step up do the right thing for your kid and your community

  • anonymous

STOP already with this Halloween garbage , The police are needed in part of the city that there shootings, NOT eggs. Every year I hear people whining about eggs, even rocks do not warrant police protection sorry! Grow up!

    • Joe.

@anonymous: I disagree. there will be a need for police protection. Especially if someone throws a rock at me, they will be investigating an assault, because I will kick the sh*t out of someone’s son or daughter. I dont care who it is.

      • anonymous

You have every right to kick the a**of any little brat throwing anything at you . We need more police to patrol the area everyday not just on halloween. I just get tired of people complaining that we need the police to go after the kids, the parents should be responsible for there kids. We need police down here not for halloween we need them here just to patrol and take care of those noisy dirt bikes and speeding cars that can actually kill someone.

        • anonymous1

In Other neighborhoods they demand police protection against gangs, drugs and guns.

Gerritsen beach demands police protection agains eggs and rocks… This is getting pretty silly don’t you think

    • Anonymous

@anonymous: I guess you forgot last year when kids assaulted a mother with her kid in a stroller with rocks!

      • Anonymous

@Anonymous: KIDS DID NOT ASSAULT A MOTHER WITH HER KID IN A STROLLER!!! Where do you even get that? They allegedly threw rocks at busses, that is bad enough, but don’t make them out to be psychos! People who can’t read or separate the facts from fiction should not be allowed to spread lies and rumors on this website. Danny, it’s comments such as the above that warrent your dropping in to set the record straight. Did you see or report that any kid threw rocks at a mother with a carriage?

        • bill

@Anonymous: First off They did Throw Rocks and eggs at a Pregnant woman and her child while the were getting out of their car.. The Cops were sitting on the corner watching and told the husband to go in the house with his wife!!! The cops drove on to the ave by the skate park and were pelted with eggs!!! They never got out of car!!! So the stories are not so far fetched!!!

  • Grand Dame of Gerritsen

It’s quite easy, arrest anyone who throws anything at anybody, if they run into the weeds, set a pack of police K-9′s on their asses, taze their asses then throw their asses into jail. Why does a whole community have to live in fear of a group of punk criminals, it’s like living in the wild west. What is so difficult, it’s so easy.

It’s only going to be a matter of time before someone gets tired of it or they pick the wrong person who’s not mentally stable and they’re gonna get shot, ran over or worse, not like that would be a bad thing, one less scum bad is a good thing..just saying.

  • Anonymous

Arrests are in order. Then the parents can come up with ideas to prevent disorder next year. Parents, get involved before you have to spend money on lawyers.

  • Shea Holmes

I can not believe a special meeting was called by the Police to try to keep law and order in the Beach. The parents of these Kids need to do their job once and for all. There was a really bad job of upbringing here !

    • GerritsenBeach.net

This was not a special meeting by any means. This was a regularly scheduled meeting. The 61 precinct community council meets every month on the 2nd Wednesday. The community council is a non-partisan group which meets with police to exchange vews and seek ways to solve local problems. A small contingent of Gerritsen Beach people did go to discuss halloween.

  • Rolyat136

A public blog is not necessarily the place to discuss police tactics for upcoming “events”.
I am not a resident of this community.
But I assume they are satisfied with Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Georgios Mastrokostas’s explanation of why the police were AWOL last year.
Absent that, the first question I might raise is why law abiding citizens are not requesting the issuance of weapons and defensive equipment to protect themselves in the absence of police action.

  • Anonymous

Ideas !!!1 Here’s one for the inspector, take the four sitting behind him and everyone else sitting on their butts and throw them out on the street to do police work and not social work. We don’t need 6 officers, 2 will be helpful and a 200 percent increase from last year

  • gene

beachrats will still go wild until somebody gets hurt. thats that sad part.

    • Anonymous

Gene, how was your Ramadan this year? I know it will be bigger & better next year & every year to come!
      Practice this phrase:
      salaam alaikum!
It will help you get along with your neighbors.

  • GB Mom

What about patrolling the back weeds on quads or dirt bikes? I know it seems a bit far fetched but police seem to have difficulty obtaining anyone who go into the back weeds and it being a part of NYC the police should have access to it. They spend thousands of dollars operating a helicopter to patrol from the sky which goes no where because unless the perpetrator comes out from the back weeds thenn they cannot catch them. If this money was spent on off-road utility vehicles that could patrol this area then it may get somewhere. THE NYOD has cars, horses, boats, towers and planes. Why not dirt-bikes or quads?

  • Anonymous

GB Mom, One problem with patrolling the back weeds is if you do catch one or two kids and they resist, and you have to physically restrain them, they would probably bring you up on assault charges. A helicopter would be best since they have infrared camera’s and can see anyone hiding even in the thickest section of the weeds and direct the police on the ground to their exact location. Also, Gerritsen ave. is divided down the middle between the 61 and 63, if the run into the weeds the 63 would be responsible, if the run down the streets, the 61 is responsible.

  • Gary

This year we should form a citizens patrol armed with weapons and cameras to patrol the neighborhood, and another group to patrol the back weeds.

Any kid throwing eggs or damaging property should be arrested , and their parents should be arrested too and forced to pay for any damages.

If our patrol can identify which kid did some damage , we will all march to the kids house and break every freakin window and trash the house.

enough is enough with this bullcrap

Halloween should be fun . It is perfectly ok to have fun , to do harmless pranks with a sense of humor, but it is not ok to terrorize the neighborhood with violence.

this year there will be a bug price to pay if these wild kids try to throw rocks

Everyone must agree to work together with each other and with the police to put a stop to the senseless violence and vandalism

  • yj gangus

this year halloween will be fun

  • Larry

this halloween , if the kids start throwing rocks, I will urinate in a balloon and pop the balloon on their faces

these kids need to gargle diarrhea in order to make their mouths cleaner

  • Gooch

remember that woman who objected to the photos of her kids vandalizing property and terrorizing people being published

I say , if eggs and rocks are hurled , we go to her house and do the exact same thing to her and see how she likes it

  • Mr Mangus Ohare

this year i will not tolerate my property being vandalized and i will fight back

  • Larry

I have been storing a tub of feces and other foul smelling substances in my basement for the past 6 months.

The smell is horrible and much worse than a skunk spray

Right before halloween i will liquify and puree my ingredients and add a purple dye

I have 2 super soaker water canons and I will patrol the area and the back weeds

any kid that throws eggs will be sprayed with fermented liquified feces and purple dye so the cops can identify and catch them

I will no longer stand for this vandalism

  • Vivian

I am all for it. kids have to learn these days. Even if they are kids, they know right from wrong. They know what they are doing is wrong. They should get punished for it. Please let me know if you need more feces and crap to throw at them!!

  • Justin Donavan

u guys sound like idiots lol

  • ken

screw the cops they arent stoping nobody their is hundreds of teen their not going 2 catch them

  • Anon

@ Larry…..can u fill some ballons with that purple stuff & give them to the adults? We’ll go tit for tat…let’s see how the kids parents like that!

  • Anonymous

Renee how about setting a good example this year and get out there with a camera and turn in the kids that are responsible for any trouble they may cause. If you want to be a good neighbor. Perhaps your child, I am assuming he goes to Xavier now, can assist you. This isn’t meant to be sarcastic.

  • Renee

Hey anonymous. What’s wrong u can’t leave a name. Come to my face if u got something instead of being a wimp nd leaving a no name comment on this bs website

  • Renee

A good example for my kids. Well let’s see I go to work everyday nd pay taxes. I take my kids out of the country on wonderful vacations nd show them life out of gerritsen beach. I have one son in Kingsboro nursing program my other son is in St. Edmund H S. My youngest is beyond his age nd has been published. But they r so evil Please grow up nd get a life instead of wasting it on the Internet.

    • Anonymous

@Renee: Please let this be real… PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET THIS BE REAL.

The police are looking for parents of the possibly troubled teens to step up and help. You were adamant that your kids were not a problem and if you can offer your assistance please do.

      Let me translate.

cops want help from u. Will u help? u say big things last year, never again u say, not U r kids u say, u r kids r bad nd need to stop with bad things.

    • nancy

      @Renee:

you need to show them how to handle life in gerritsen beach-your throwing your money out the window w/ your vacations and private eduaction. Do you really think justifying their behavior by stating that you have money to spend is the answer?? what is wrong w/ you?

  • Frank

Lets face some facts, the cops of the 61pct suck and anytime we ask for help they send Auxillary, but the bottom line is can’t we do a better job at controlling our children and being parents! I would loose my mind if my kid was even part of a group or the one disrespecting cops or causing harm on others. What is so hard to understand here

  • Frank

I wish Parents would STOP with the NOT MY KID nonsense! It doesn’t make you a bad parent when your kid gets caught, it does make you a bad parent when you don’t acknowledge what your kid may or may have not done. Kids will be kids we were there once and yes we made mistakes but it was our parents job to teach us and correct our wrong doings not protect us and make it right for us to do again. The big picture is that we will not always be here for them so we need to teach them now!

    • trainman

      @Frank:
Frank, I very much agree with this statement. I think everyone should print this letter out and frame it for everyone to see.
Parenting is NOT about being friends with your children… They have enough friends. Parenting is about guiding your children to treat others the way they would like others to treat them.
Thank you again for your comment.

  • Frank

Wow it is amazing how many idiots frequent this post and how many people don’t care about their children. Sorry Trainman

Wow it is amazing how many idiots frequent this post and how many people don’t care about their children. Sorry Trainman

I don’t think there are so many idiots on this site Frank, I think it’s a few kids that have learned to hack this site and register many more unfavorables than actually would occur. I personally never rate someone’s letter. You don’t have to be told that an Apple is bad you could tell by just looking at it. GB.net should reevaluate the need to rate pro or con at the end of a comment.

  • Frank

Everyone is always worried about what everyone else is doing except their own kids

  • Frank

for all of the punks on here just want to remind you that you are trashing the neighborhood that you grew up in and giving this neighborhood a bad name!!! You are amatuers and have No idea how much harm you are doing to yourselves and the future of this community! Start growing up it is a harsh world out there, you have no IDEA. Bottom line cut the non sense

  • The Good Suffer

I dont live in geritsen beach but reading these comments make most of u sound like morones. In my day if my father heard I was doing what these kids are doing he would have been out driving around looking for me.He would have beat the s;;t out of me. I guess being a father these days meansyou can let your kids roam do what thay whant with out suffering the consequences. So thank all the fathers that dont give a sh*t.

  • nancy

I have the pleasure of riding the b31 everyday with these lovely children-most of whom are dressed in parochial school clothes.I wish their parents would ride the bus undercover just once to listen to the conversations and the way they harrass classmates and other bus riders-the very boys that seem to come up as a person of interest every time vile behavior occurs in the beach- saying disgusting things to girls -the girls they seem to consider less than desirable-who by the way are also dressed in the same st edmunds uniforms-in public school it would be called bullying and sexual harrasement and they would be suspended.
that being said-the comments are screamed across the bus and include the foulest language riddled with terms such as BL..J.B and F..k M. and all those wonderful things vile people say to those who are not popular-
and the girls who are obviously part of the popular club are just as vile.
Now, i would love to tell you that it’s not your kid to those who post here and defend their kids actions -especially last halloween-unfortunately-i can’t do that- i have personally witnessed on a daily basis-the sons and friends of the sons of the woman who posts on here act like the biggest as*h***s and morons on the planet.
I would advise these parents to wake the F up but i think based on the je*ko**s public behavior on a city bus where the bus driver actually has to intervene because of the discomfort level that occurs-EVERY DAY- for our neighbors such as myself who just want to get home after a long day at work, it really wouldn’t matter because it obviously stems from the home.
Perhaps the money you all are spending on this private education would be better spent on some therapy for these kids? I do believe your children are having an identity crisis-they use the N word and refer to themselves and each other as if they are young african american adults that are living in a rap video.
The young african american adults and teens i see everyday do not behave the way your kids do-your children are giving the african american children a bad name-please explain to them that children from the projects seem to know how to behave and yet the children from gerritsen beach/marine park have no clue as to what is proper public behavior- in other words- the morons who r your kids and your friends kids are the biggest losers on the planet-they should all be rounded up and put somewhere where u can visit them but the rest of the world won’t have to be subject to their as.ho.en.ss and do.cheba.ness( i think those of us who r sick of these families understand)

  • Anonymous

@ Nancy, Some of the adults are no better. After last halloweens debacle he was subjected to commemts & cursed out by adults on his way to school & while shopping in New Dutch. All for being in the same age group. He was’nt even out last Halloween. he was in the house playing video games & no where near the Ave.

  • nancy

The adults are sick and tired of these kids.i am not sure what kid you are talking about either. I can tell you that i know the kids i ride home with and they r disgraceful.and i agree w/ you -adults should only confront the parent of a kid- i am a parent as well and i would want to know if my kid was up to no good and have the right to defend him or her if necessary-but in this case the very kids who were posting all over and having their pix taken throwing crap at people last year ARE the very same kids i ride w/ every day.

    • Beachwalker

@nancy: Maybe you should try and find someone who rides with YOUR kids to tell you how THEY behave. Why are you so sure that yours don’t curse etc. when your not around? You are doing exactly what others are accused of doing, you think yours are angels. My Mother gave me great advice when I had my first child, she said, “don’t ever criticize other people’s children or how they are being raised. Do your best but never assume they are angels when your not around. ALL kids test the boundries. ALL kids try different personnas and do inexplicable things sometimes, it’s all part of growing up. Don’t have anything to say about anyone elses kids, no matter how good you think yours are and they appear to be. Yours aren’t raised yet and you may be surprised by the things they will tell you that they got away with when they are grown.” Is there anyone reading this who didn’t do anything when they were kids that their parents would be surprised to learn? Really, Nancy, are/were you that perfect? Are you absolutely positive that your kids are? Can you really be sure that at no time ever someone didn’t see or hear something your kids did/said and say ,’tsk, tsk, the parents must be animals!’? Would you have liked it to be posted on the internet? Let us all know what bus YOUR kids are on and I will go spy on them when your not around and maybe post a video of it on here. Wouldn’t that be fun? If you want to “help” these parents with their parenting skills why don’t you go and speak to them privately instead of posting it on this ridiculous website?

      • nancy

        @Beachwalker:
well, yes i am perfect but besides that i see the kids, i hear them ,so does everyone else on the bus -it goes on everyday-my kids probably curse like mofo’s but thats not the issue here.i know they aren’t on gerritsen avenue disrupting everyone else and quite frankly, why are you attacking me? i am just telling you what goes on-i never said not my kids,my kids would get their as**s kicked if i saw them on any website or newspaper throwing crap at cars and people ,i wouldn’t be defending them that much i can tell you.

        • nancy

          @nancy:
also i am not helping anyone w parenting skills ,never intended to say that if thats how you took it-and of course my kids have done stuff i would find out aboutlater or maybe never find out about-does that make these kids behavior OK? and i would hope my kids would not be stupid enough to allow themselves to be caught on camera doing jacka** things- You seem awfully upset ,why? it is what it is, annoying people raising annoying children who could care less about everyone else – same old ,same old

          • BrooklynGrl

            @nancy:
I find it awfully suspicious that the people responding about the kids’ behavior – aren’t actually agreeing that something has to be done to stop this. They are just “defending” their actions as childs play? That is why there is no change in the Beach…Like Father, Like Son – Like Mother, Like Daughter. I feel bad for you and the bus driver!!

          • Beachwalker

@nancy: @nancy: I’m not defending their actions last year, how did you arrive at that? Your post and my response had to do with your busride. If you are unfortunate enough to have to ride a bus or take a train for that matter at the end of the school day, I don’t care what school it is or what neighborhood it is in, you are going to hear the same stuff. Try the B44 at 2:30. It’s how teens are. It’s how they always have been. Lol, I remember how bad the city bus was coming home from 277 in the 70′s.! Same in JHS and HS. I’m sure that it was shocking to other people on the bus. Not every kid perhaps, and the language etc. is worse now than ever, but foul language is something that society as a whole accepts more now than ever before. Sometimes I can’t believe what I hear on TV now. And radio. The front page of the NYPost should be rated ‘R’ some days. Where do you think they get the things they say? They will grow up and others will take their place. Most of them will turn out just fine. Some of them will go into the service. Many will go on to college. And you’ll still be a busybody.

          • Beachwalker

@nancy: “Not helping anyone with parenting skills if that’s how I took it??? You said, “It really wouldn’t matter because it obviously starts from the home.” “Perhaps the money you are spending on this private education would be better spent on therapy for these kids.” And my favorite, “I do believe your children are having an identity crisis” (Thank you, Doctor!)

      • Samantha R.

@Beachwalker: Its funny that you call Nancy a busybody meanwhile I see you post on here at least 2 to 3 times a week! Why dont you get a life and not worry so much about defending the low life teens that roam the streets late at night drinking and doing drugs. If these kids werent causing a problem in our neighborhood than nobody would be posting about them, furthermore do you think any of these punks would defend you? Take a moment and think about it, did any of the neighborhood teens run to your aid and defend you when the news cameras were in front of your house because of all the birds on Cyrus avenue? I don’t think so. I’ve been living in this neighborhood for 37 years and the point is that the roving teens have consistently been getting worse and somebody needs to do something about it before people start taking matters into their own hands, because that’s when people will start getting hurt.

  • BrooklynGrl

WOW. I am sickened by this crap. STILL it is going on and I have been gone for at least 7 years. I’m 31 now and I got out bc the neighborhood was going down pretty fast..and here we are – with parents who are allowing their kids to be animals – and trying to find a way to come off as “right” when they scream and shake their little fists at no one in particular. LEAD BY EXAMPLE. There’s a new one. No one cares how much money you have. We all have money and we all go on vacations. BUT – are your kids unruly and belligerent? Do people want to be around the “youth of Gerritsen Beach” because they are smart and honorable young adults? Do they instill hope for the neighborhood? Afraid NOT. It’s quite sad actually. There are good families and good people there who are trying to build a nicer place to live and create community. Unfortunately, that dream is tarnished by the embarrasment of those obnoxious kids.Parents -and you know exactly who you are- DO SOMETHING!Dont give them money to buy eggs! Take their gaming systems! take the TV out of their room! GROW UP AND BE A PARENT!!

  • nancy

every comment that opposes these kids and their dumba** behavior is not liked so much that the comments are hidden??? hilarious. how many times did beachwalker and pals click on dislike to collapse these comments? so dumb, why don’t you guys just reign in your little darlings, tell them to cut the crap and leave everyone else alone? is that to much to ask?
or better yet, stay off the site ,let those of us who have to deal w/ these children while you are busy ignoring their actions vent. we put up with their actions all the time, why don’t we get to complain? because you say so? please. and as far as trying different personas? what the hell r u talking about? being gangsta in their freaking khakis and collared shirts? is that what you are referencing? do you have any idea how embarassing it is to listen to them ? i actually feel bad for them because of how stupid they sound when they refer to each other as son and N**** .jeez, you really need to get a clue.

I say we start deploying police with VIDEO Cameras on certain corners. Afterwards they can post all videos on G.B.Net. This way all the parents can see their precious offspring in action. Then the Police can use to make PARENTS pay for vandilism. The only way to teach sometimes has to go thru the wallet!!

    • Anonymous

This sounds like you want something to happen. VIDEO cameras ? Do you have a pre- concieved opinion of this years Halloween before it happens ? Do you like the drama ? I bet you love the National Enquirer too.

      • Beachwalker

@Anonymous: I agree with you. These people are absolutly salivating in anticipation of getting their fun sitting at their computers and ripping apart the kids, their parents, the neighborhood. Talk about beating a dead horse, no matter what the subject is someone finds it necessary to bring up Halloween 2010. Idiots talking about all kinds of vigilaniism towards young teens and their families. It is insane! Danny I’m sure is looking forward to another banner week or month. Maybe another appearance in the NY Times so he can feel almost like a real journalist. I hope this year is quiet, I hope this years group of young teens have the brains to stay out of trouble and are kept from it by their parents. Don’t give them the satisfaction of having anything to say!

I never asked for drama,I hope they won’t be necessary. Danny did this community a service by showing everyone that parents must take action so this doesn’t happen again. This Halloween let’s make it for the kids!!

Past behavior is a good indicator of future behavior, why do we have to be terroized by these kids? I pay taxes, I work, I mind my business and respect others, why do I have to worry about someone causing damage to me or my property? I have been here over 23 years and while it was bad at night, these punks are taking it up a notch, time to take back our own neighborhood, this is crazy.

If you retaliate I’m sure YOU will be arrested, I will guarantee that. Never mess with anyone who has less to lose than you do.

I think that as soon as a group forms along the avenue on side of the fields, it maybe time for the local firehouses and yes maybe the Vollies to do some training of the new jacks with the hoses and even water the grass.
