Bob Turner is our New Congressman

Bob Turner, a Queens businessman, defeated David Weprin winning the 9th Congressional District by a margin of more than eight percent (with 84 percent of districts counted just after midnight).

Statement From David Weprin

I just called Bob Turner to congratulate him on a well-fought campaign. He will now have the honor of representing Brooklyn and Queens in Congress, and I hope that he will work every day to represent all of the diverse communities that make up the 9th Congressional district.

I’m incredibly proud of the campaign that we ran, and incredibly grateful to the countless volunteers who worked day after day to bring our message to voters. In doing so we raised the profile of issues like Medicare, Social Security, and tax relief for working families – issues that will be of critical importance for the next Congress.

Though we may not have won, our work is far from over. The challenges that face our nation are many, and I will continue to work with all of my supporters to ensure that middle class New Yorkers have a real voice in our city, our state, and our country.

    Good luck Mr Turner

  • trainman

Well at least Mr. Turner is considered a moderate Republican. I say moderate compared to the Republican leaders in Washington today.
If this is indeed a statement for Pres. Obama, I hope he takes notice and comes across with the promises he made in 2008, or, unfortunately, he will be a one term President.

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately? There’s a reason why he will be.

      • anonymous

From your mouth to God’s ears.I don’t see anything constructive this President has done, all his BS is just that. The wars are still going on, and now +1.We are supporting rebels, in countries, and we don’t even know who they are. Guantanamo is still open. Unemployment is way north of 9%.The stimulus is a total failure. We have helped to murder over 36,000 Mexicans in their own Country with a program that everyone denies knowledge of..Banks in Europe are collapsing due to our bad mortgage paper. Our own Banks, are being sued by our own Government, for Billions. Our Dollar is collapsing along with the Euro and the British Pound.China is buying debt in nations around the world. Not because they are nice. But they are securing natural resources like oil, uranium, copper, and aluminium. China is drilling oil off the coast of Cuba at the far end of the BP oil field disaster site. And we lent billions to Petrobas the Brazilian Socialist Government controlled oil giant. To drill in 26,000 feet of water,in one of the largest oil fields ever. While leaving our own oil off limits.I really have no idea who this Obama truly is. I only hope like you we can get rid of him soonone term is more than enough for him

Now all we need is for someone with the name Overdrive or two people with the names Over and Drive to win congressional seats and then we would have Bachmann Turner Overdrive in congress. Maybe then, they can take care of business.

I’m glad our community sent a message. Stop the spending and dividing up tax payer money. GROW the economy and jobs – including union pension jobs will follow.

I feel sorry for conservatives. They are terrified of the future, any future. The future is coming. They cannot stop it. They should be looking forward to the future and looking to embrace that future.

As for those people in Brighton Beach. they should return to Russia.

As for the Orthodox Jews, They can cling to the past also. Only not everyone wearing a Yarmulka is a role model or a hero. Just look at Sen. Kruger, on his way to Jail, or to the killer of the little boy.

“When Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and waving a cross” – Sinclair Lewis

    • Anonymous

Who the hell is Sinclair Lewis and why should we care ?

      • Sinclair Lewis was one of the great writers of the early 20th century.

I suggest you read his book, “It Can’t Happen Here”. Because it can happen here. In fact, it is beginning even now.

Misattributed:@Lisanne!: When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.
Many variants of this exist, but the earliest known incident of such a comment appears to be a partial quote from James Waterman Wise, Jr., reported in a 1936 issue of The Christian Century that in a recent address here before the liberal John Reed club said that Hearst and Coughlin are the two chief exponents of fascism in America. If fascism comes, he added, it will not be identified with any “shirt” movement, nor with an “insignia,” but it will probably be “wrapped up in the American flag and heralded as a plea for liberty and preservation of the constitution.”[1]
Another early quote is that of Halford E. Luccock, in Keeping Life Out of Confusion (1938): When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled “made in Germany”; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, “Americanism.” Harrison Evans Salisbury in 1971 remarked about Lewis: “Sinclair Lewis aptly predicted in It Can’t Happen Here that if fascism came to America it would come wrapped in the flag and whistling ‘The Star Spangled Banner.'” [citation needed]

          @Lisanne!:
          Lisanne,
I really would like to read your take on fascism.
I am a bit of a conspiracy addict myself and I have a long history with this government and its evolution towards a two class society. Do you think it can be stopped? If so, how?

          • anonymous

Trainman : What this country has turned into over the last 80 years is a two party Dictatorship. Democrats or Republicans take your pick ? What we really need here is a viable and constructive third party..I sometimes don’t understand the criticisms of the Taxed Enough Group {TEA} as a Party.. You easily tolerate the, American Communist Party, The Socialist Party,The Green Party etc. I think those Parties, are not taken seriously enough only, because most of us don’t think they stand a chance of winning much…I am not fooled by them. They all have the same objective, the destruction of our American way of life.If you expect a classless society in the U.S. you will have a long wait There is no Country be it Communist,Facist,or Socialist that is classless. If there is any that come to your mind, please let me know ?

Now that he’s done harrassing the Beach with never ending phone calls, are his campaign staff going to collect all their signs and garbage they put up all over the place. The signs are still stuck in the ground along Gerritsen. His supporters should move their lazy butts.

  • anon

Now that we have elected a republican to fill Weiner’s seat we have given the Tea Party idiots the idea that they can win next November. We should be aware of what we are in for…. They expect us to tighten our belts while they loosen theirs. They take every perk that is available to them including health care which most of us can’t afford. The will tax us to death and free millionaires from taxation. We can say good bye to Social Security, pensions and unions. God bless America.

    • anonymous

I don’t know where you get your information from. When you see Hasidic Jews and Conservative Catholics voting the same way that should tell you something about your present Government and how the people feel….SS is secure, Your pensions are and backed by the Federal Government Pension Guarantee Corporation and Unions will always exist What is your problem . And yes GOD BLESS AMERICA !!!

      • trainman

        @anonymous:

anonymous, I don’t know where you’re getting your information pertaining to federally secure pensions. Last year and this year no less than 27 states filed legislation to reduce municipal pensions, including this one, in one way or another. As far as pensions in the private sector, I personally know someone who retired from the airline industry and had his pension reduced 60%.

There are companies that claim bankruptcy then open up a business in another name to avoid paying pensions. The auto industry’s pension fund is underfunded by billions of dollars.
Just recently off-track betting employees lost everything when the city shut it down. In my own industry all the companies in my union ceased paying into the pension fund as of January first of this year. Being retired and obviously concerned I called my union and they told me not to worry that we have enough money in the plan to pay my pension for the rest of my life. I asked them to send me statistics and they refused.
You say Social Security is secure. In one way you are correct, but what about no cost-of-living increases for the last two years in spite of huge cost of living expenses in the city? The federal government and US industry seem to be in unison regarding pensions and fringe benefits. Also, don’t forget President Bush’s push to privatize Social Security a few years back. Could you imagine what we would have left with this recent downturn in the US economy? Isn’t president hopeful Rick Perry from the great state of Texas also interested in revamping Social Security? It’s also interesting in Washington with politicos constantly referring to OUR Social Security and Medicare as “entitlements” and how expensive they are, the cost of THEIR pensions and fringe benefits never work their way into the conversation. I guess they must have gotten bargain basement rates at Walmart.

        • anonymous

Trainman : While it is true, many States are trying to pass legislation, to change existing contracts for Municipal Worker new hires..They will have a tough fight on their hands, due to the fact that the same people who vote for them are the ones they are reducing..As far as Private Pension systems. The Government set up in 1974 the Federal Pension Guarantee Corporation. It was amended in 2006.It is to complicated to explain here, but Wikipedia explains it all. I am sorry that YOUR union will not cooperate with and tell you exactly where your money is.It hurts when you trusted in them for so long I guess ?
Social Security is secure until 2038, OMB estimates. As far as our no increase for the last 2 years..They base your increase on the rate of inflation which the Treasury and the Federal Reserve says is .02 % So no raise for you .We all know this is a lie, but when they figure the inflation rate. They exclude food and fuel from the numbers. Our real rate is most likely 6-7% inflation, But they control the numbers and we don’t.. As far as the Privatization idea ,it never went anywhere, and never will.. If we are smart we as voters will never allow it.

          • sorry for you all

Also what was not mentioned was that.As of Jan of 2011 a “Tax Holiday” was granted for SS withholding from the 6.2 % down to 4.2% for employees for one year So if you max out at the 106,000.00 level> You will save over 2000.00 in contributions again the rich get richer !! Not to worry though your Government will make up the short fall in contributions from the General Fund. Which is the same place your whole contribution went in the first place. Sounds confusing and under handed to me. But this is your Politicians at work.

          • trainman

            @anonymous:
Anonymous, I read your response twice and it seems that in your attempt to contradict my beliefs you apparently enforced them.
            Let me explain.
Your original letter said that pensions are secure and when I mentioned about 27 states with legislation in hand trying to reduce those pensions, you said “To change existing contracts for Municipal Worker new hires” you went on to say they will have a tough fight ahead of the them. The fact still remains that it is our politicians, the ones who we voted for and pay for with our tax dollars are trying to decrease the standard of living for new employees. It doesn’t make it okay because they’re only targeting new employees. We seem to lose sight that these people (elected officials) run for office promising to make our lives better not worse and they should be held accountable for that.
I’m aware of the government guaranteed pension fund that went into effect in 96. I receive two separate checks for the same pension. The federal guaranteed check is for the last nine years of my pension and the other check (which is Not guaranteed) is for the previous 31 years. I agree that it is a complicated law but I’m pretty sure that municipal unions are not protected by it.

Next, your original letter stated that Social Security is secure. Then you went on to say that it’s secure to 2038. I don’t think anyone under the age of 47 is going to feel very SECURE about that especially in the climate we have today where many of our Washington elected officials are calling it an expensive entitlement program and Ponzi scheme.
Like I said with my original statement. The federal government along with city and state governments are in a concerted effort to reduce the standard of living of American citizens. They are being encouraged by the very people who stand to gain the most and those people for the most part, fund, lobby and buy through campaign contributions our elected officials.
The flavor of the day our Politicians promise seems to be jobs, jobs, jobs. We were promised in 2008 by the Obama administration. We were promised in 2009 by Mayor Bloomberg and again in 2010 by the Republican Tea Party. Instead of jobs we are intimidated by trying to slash benefits while not raising taxes for the very wealthy. If that’s not an indication of how these elected officials are thinking, I don’t know what is.
PS just an added bit of information. All those new jobs people are getting in the auto industry are at $14 an hour exactly half of what the other employees are getting that were already working there. These are not apprenticeship jobs. Many of the new hires were laid off from those very same jobs two years ago. This was an agreement between the auto industries and the elected officials that oversaw the auto industries’ bail out program.

        • beach bum

@trainman: a friend told me about hollywood fl pensions, where people voted to cut 50% from pensions (city)or else there would be major layoffs and also large tax increases not much of a choice, funny though no politicans will get a pay cut or a reduction in their pensions. although people who are retired will not be touched yet, we shall see.

    • sorry for you all

Anon :I don’t really understand how you can call people “Tea Party Idiots”..They are not a party, only a movement that has forced Both Democrats and Republicans to explain their actions to the public..We have all been living under the misconception that they are separate entities. The reality is that they play a game,a puppet show, for the public view. And work out mysterious deals between themselves. Then come to us all with their announcements of a victory. We have been living under what can be called a two party dictatorship.Trading Presidents,Congresses, and Senates between these two groups for far to long.It is paralyzing and polarizing us for so many years it is hard to think straight politically anymore.I am surprised that you don’t use the term “Progressive Idiots” for Liberals.on the far left. But I guess that is not in your lexicon.I am not asking anyone to subscribe to any political agenda. Only to listen to both sides, then make your decision, and not dismiss ideas as idiotic.Take the cotton out of your ears and listen.

No everything we ever worked for is on the line for elimination. I read many papers, I watch multiple news broadcasts from home and abroad, but NOT Murdochs stations. His view is pro republican and he makes not bones about it. If the government goes into default as threatened earlier this year, the great depression will look like a cake walk.
Social Security for me is secure as I am retired, but all the others……

    • sorry for you all

Murdoch is not your problem ..Reality is…The Government has almost defaulted before. Until an agreement was reached and They just passed Continuing Resolution Bills..No big deal here….

You have to love all this hate for fox and other right leaning broadcasting outfits. If the major media was not the propaganda wind of the Democrat party we would not need Fox, talk radio and other “right” outlets. Stop casting blame on those that found a niche and start holding the so called journalists in the main stream media to their ethical duties of reporting the news not towing the line for their agenda. If the last presidential election proved one thing it was that the propaganda machine is alive and well. Not reporting the news or only reporting negative news about one party is not journalism. If a Republican candidate had radical associations such as the rev wright, bill ayers, and farrakhan they would have been done. Seems being in bed with radicals is ok if they are on the left.

When is Bob Turner going to start work ? We have’nt heard from him since elected. I hope he picked up all his litter

  • tax payer

can someone explain to me how a retired cop who only worked 15 yrs. went out with a three quarters tax free pension because he is disabled can work security for Bob Turner and drag a growm man out of a building by his collar. Can you look into this Bob ?

    • Kelly D

What ever happened to freedom of speech ? For that matter Freedom.! Seems that Turner is not what he represented himself to be.

  • Anonymous

OMG! You took the words right out of my mouth! And I would like to add to that by what authority did this SOB drag that man out? That man was making a point about how Turner has after only 2 short months already betrayed his supporters. Heckling is annoying but the man was not cursing or insanely ranting and had, AS AN AMERICAN, every right to speak. Between that and the middle of the night clearing of the 99% from the park I feel as if we are turning into another country. Throwing out the press first and then forcibly removing people. I read the newspaper and feel as if I am reading about Nazi Germany or some crappy dictatorship.I have to remind myself that this is happening here and NOW. Asking Bob Turner to look into the man’s obviously bogus disability pension is almost as funny as John Liu being the Comptroller!

  • Irish Kevin

It seems that good old Bob is just a typical Politician who will say anything to get elected.Once Elected all bets are off,so what else is new ??
