Did that happen near Marine Park JHS? If so I grew up near there and kids have been hanging around the park for years especially near the handball courts off of Ave S. Part of the problem may have been in trying to get a quick PD response on what may have been a busy Saturday night. Going inside your house and picking up & firing an apparently unlicensed rifle may not have been the most intelligent response. These things eventually usually resolve themselves if left to run their course. If it’s a chronic problem well that’s a whole other issue that needs to be addressed with local pols & the police.

Let me preface my remarks by saying that the violent response by the homeowner in this case is totally inexcusable, but the fact remains that groups of teenagers have for some time now been able to congregate near the park, in the schoolyard of Good Shepherd, and multiple areas in the Beach, causing mischief and mayhem with little or no response from the NYPD. I realize that they do have their hands full with covering such a large area of Brooklyn, but as it has been proven in the past, these so called “minor” crimes and inconveniences often lead to more serious problems. Why have the police forgotten that cracking down on such quality of life infractions is what led our city out of the crime ridden darkness of the past. What I find even more stunning is that many times parents are willingly dropping their children off at these locations after dark when these areas are known to be closed for the evening, without any concern for the noise & disruption they cause for the neighboring families. Certainly the NYPD needs to step up and do the right thing in these cases, but it is ultimately up to the parents to insure that their children are not being disruptive and disrespectful to others.

You want to shake his hand? Are you for real ? Were talking about an adult shooting at children with a rifle. Kids get rowdy when adults are not present. It’s a fact of life. I’m sure you did it too.If it was some kid in your family I bet you would’nt feel the same way. What next ? Knifing people for jaywalking ?

It took three calls before the NYPD responded to a gun being fired at people on the street. There is no excuse or explanation that will take care of that one. Every other thing the cops may have been doing should have been dropped for this – and wasn’t. Bloomberg has destroyed the NYPD.

really?? teens provoke shooting? i usually agree w/ things on here, but this headline is horrible. a man takes a gun from his home and shoots on his block into a crowd? if this was a story about the other side of knapp street,we would be calling for his head. yes,the teens around here can be real bastards, but to take your gun and shoot ?? while you have your own kid and wife in the house?
this is a disgusting headline and you should be ashamed of yourself for your wording. i think perhaps you are enjoying the controversy you cause a little to much.please do what you have been doing for a long time now, talk about the goings on in the neighborhood in a fair fashion, don’t start w/ headlines meant to provoke reactions from your critics.

The teens were destroying property and got into a physical confrontation with the shooter. They DID provoke the shooting. These kids are not afraid of much, that’s the problem. They are not afraid of their do nothing parents, and not afraid of their do nothing police. People are going to take the law into their own hands when mommy and daddy don’t know how to discipline and the police are too busy with taking advantage of drunk women to notice. The shooter was just dumb for shooting from his own window. He set himself up to get caught.

      • The True Story

These kids, particularly the one who was seriously wounded DID NOT start the fight, In fact it was the drunken Mr. Dunikowski who did. Have you read anywhere that those supposed hoodlem fought him back, after he hit one of them first? The answer is NO, because they didn’t. That just goes to show you who the real hoodlum is. It’s Mr. Dunikowski.

And you jerks think he is justified in shooting into a crowd of teenagers? Because they were making noise? Have you all gone insane? Shame on you! He’s the crimminal here, not the kids.

This a prime example of the wrong use of deadly force..You, and even the police, are only able to use deadly force when your life is in danger…If this idiot was able to get to an upstairs firing position..And fire randomly, from a window, into a crowd, with a semi-automatic weapon…This does not constitute proper use of deadly force…He should have been charged with attempted murder amongst other crimes…Is this what people like the Dunikowski family are being celebrated for ? If so we are in serious trouble….

Everyone needs to realize that this weapon is the same as an M-16. Does anyone, in their right mind think that any citizen needs to be packing that in their home? Or that it is necessary for hunting? Although, that’s what the NRA says. I believe in 2nd amendment rights, I believe it is meant for self defense or possibly even defense against the gov’t if that is necessary. I believe that is what the founding fathers were most concerned with. But there also has to be rational laws that keep these types of firepower out of the hands of hot heads with drug and alchohol issues.

How old were these kids ?? I heard 13-15 years old, maybe I’m nuts or missing something but don’t 13- 15 year old CHILDREN belong at home with their mommy and daddy at this time of night. Like I said maybe I missed the parenting course on caring for and supervising children.
As for the police taking forever to get to the 911 calls, 1st I bet there was a little border war between the 61 and 63 as to whose call it was, 2nd it was close to the change of shift and we all know what that means
I feel for the home owner but he didn’t need to be shooting up the street blindly from his window. On the other hand maybe Children Services needs to check on a few families and how they endanger their children by not providing shelter for them at night or not supervising them.

There really are simple minded people on this website lately. I can not believe that everyone is so proud of this nut who fired 30 rounds into a crowd of kids, people just walking by and his own neighbors. There is something wrong here this is not the way to handle anything he pulled out a rifle not a gun he is a disturbed person. And to everyone bashing the cops not everyone of them climbed into bed with that lady some of them do take thier jobs serious. So basically what everyone is saying they will now take care of things themselves and not bothering calling the cops.

To those “Aghast” at teens provoking the shooting, clearly you do not live in this area. The kids are out of control, look at Halloween, the average person would be in jail for the things they get away with. The cops don’t do anything, the parents are too busy saying..”Not my Kid” and when there’s physical evidence, say video or pictures, they accuse the people catching their lovely antics of being a pedophile, amazing. Entitled, disrespectful, common courtesy is a thing of the past, just a matter of time. I heard some kids saying how they would “pop” someone for telling them to wait in line like everyone else, yeah, well someone got popped alright.

This man is no hero and to think he is you have to be ignorant and a morron. NOONE has a right to open fire at a crowd of teenagers(this is why we pay the cops with our tax money). For all of you idiots who support him he lives across the street from marine park junior high school, if he couldnt take the noise from the school would it have been ok to open fire on them,no i dont think so. All of you people at one point were hanging around the streets at this time. So dont critize these kids and say this idiot was right for shooting at teens and then cowardly hide behind his wife and child. Im sure this would be a completly different story if this was your child in this situation.

The only thing I dislike about the shooter, is that he did not seek out the parents of these wild teens and shoot them too.

Parents need to take responsibility for the uncouth and criminal actions of their kids.

When a teen is arrested for a crime, the parents should be arrested too.

I believe the story said the “shooter” tried to tell the kids to move along and get away from his property. They were fighting and carrying on near or on his property and harassing his neighbor. There was also a claim that he called 911 a few times to report what was going on prior to confronting the mob which had no interest in respecting his family, his private property or the other people on the block. I do not think the correct course of action was to begin to shoot into the mob, however something can be said about respect for private property and the individuals God given right to feel safe in their own yard and house.

People are out of control and have no respect for others and their property. This seems to be a gross over reaction, but I was not there being harassed by a mob of punks on my own property without any response from the police. I will tell you one thing, I bet there are 30 kids from the area that will never act the fool again when someone they are trying to intimidate with their wilding tells them to take a hike. Sounds like they tried their tough guy antics on the wrong guy and he upped the ante. Too bad lives had to be ruined in the course of this.

Maybe the parents of the 15 year kid you know should be reported to Child Welfare as they are obsviously failing to properly supervise their 15 year old child who is out running the streets at 11:30 at night. For those who claim to know that these teens were not causing problems on the block, you need to ask yourself this one question: Why were a number of the neighbors already outside their homes to observe the teens so late at night, and why was someone taping the activity ***Before the Shooting Started***??? Most people I know do not venture out at midnight just to videotape teens who are quietly walking or riding down their street. It seems obvious that some kind of activity prompted them to go outside and investigate. Not to mention the documented vehicle damage reported to the police and mentioned in the news.

Just looking for clarification on the following statement “The shooting that transpired is totally reprehensible and cannot be tolerated in a civil society.” I this statement meant to be a general statement or is it directly related to this incident? I ask because, I have to assume no one civil ever wants to shoot another, however to keep society civil and protect ones individual rights some people must be stopped with deadly force. Contrary to popular believe, the police are the second line of dense for people. In this great nation with out rights, the individual is the first line of dense against criminals and those that wish us harm. If the statement is general, the poster is in the wrong country considering this great nation was build upon a right to protect ones self, which following their logic would make one of the founding principles of America based uncivil. It is interesting how many “Americans” disregard the principles this great nation was founded on because they disagree with them. I bet a mob of teens would think twice about behaving this way in Florida or Texas knowing full well that homeowners are prepared to protect their property and family.

It is a founding principle of this great nation, we need criminal control, which firearms contribute to. If you want a gun less society go live in a dictatorship or a soft socialist nation like England or Canada. Don’t forget statistics show crime is greater in countries without the right to bear arms. Crimes such as home invasions are more likely due to the lack of fear on the part of those doing these crimes.

If we followed your logic we could simply move to marshal law being that free will and individual rights are the root of all crime. If people are not allowed to leave their house without an express reason and permission from the crown there will be less problems in society.

As for the assault weapons issue, I would bet 9 out of ten people have not idea what the difference is between a semi automatic rifle and an assault weapon is. This is not necessarily their fault being that the anti gun (read anti Bill of Rights ) lobby has done a great job to confuse the issue.

The issue is simple, when people harm others for no good reason take action against them. When people harm others in defense self defense understand it is their right to protect themselves. Inanimate objects are not the culprit, the root of the problem is a lack of respect for each other and a liberal justice system that protects the criminal class.

There is less crime in England and Japan then the U.S. They have strict gun control. There is also far less murders. You can look it up. Your facts are not correct Foo.

No anon, guns do not kill innocent people, lowlife murdering criminals kill innocent people. The 2nd Amendment serves a valuable purpose in this country. To protect the innocent from the guilty. Most liberals such as yourself just can’t see it that way, and would like nothing better than to strip law abiding citizens of the protections the 2nd Amendment affords………”Laws that forbid the carrying of arms..disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one.” – Thomas Jefferson

Two Island nations smaller than Texas. Of course they have less crime. They also don’t have as many illegal immigrants & other “problems” that we have here.

Yes, you do need a gun to protect yourself and your family. You also need to understand, how and when to use it…I personally prefer a 12Ga 5 shot pump shotgun for home defense…With a shotgun you only have to be close to put an intruder down…With a rifle you have to aim at your target intruder… You cannot by any means fire from your windows or chase someone around the streets with it..When, and if the Police do arrive all they are going to see is you and your shotgun in the street…And you might be the one who gets injured…Remember even if you are not a hunter, you can easily become the hunted…

You are correct, just like any dangerous equipment (car, boat, heavy equipment, or knife) you need to be prudent and responsible. Just because you have the option, and tool(s) to use deadly force, does not mean you are justified in it.

I find it interesting that many anti gun types have no issue with the police having firearms, however they fail to realize many sportsman spend more time training with and have more passion for firearms.

The problem here isn’t gun control. The problem here is that these kids were not smart to begin with. I mean theres a friggen park next to em and of all places they choose to pick a fight in front of someone’s property. If any of these kids were CONSIDERATE to begin with, they would’ve taken their beef up in the park well away from any innocent bystanders and we wouldn’t have any bad press now. But they instead choose to be selfish and drag everyone else down with them. So whose the real morons here huh?

This ENTIRE event could’ve been prevented had the kids been home sitting on their asses playing xbox or whatever instead of lurking around the streets seeing who had the bigger prick. I’ve been on this damn block for quite some time now and have absolutely no problem with the kids that come around 3 in the morning kicking over trash cans, arguing with each other over who fucked this and who they want to fuck next and the retards that completely blow the stop sign while gunning it down the block. WHY? because they’re in the park and well away from me to not have to feel threatened with my life nor property.

But what I do have a problem with are inconsiderate pricks who come around kicking over your trash cans that you left out to be collected in the morn, foot prints on people’s cars and rocks through rear windshields just because. Lets face it people, we all get our shits handed to us at work and when we come home we want to enjoy our “us” time. We treat our neighbors with respect and live by the creed of “don’t do onto those you wouldn’t want done onto you”.

The problem isn’t the lack of police presence or the kids. The problem is lack of courtesy and consideration for other people. I mean hey, if my parents talked to me more and spent more time doing things that I actually liked more ( I can’t remember when was the last time my dad even played a game with me ) I wouldn’t be outside looking for an excuse to not go home now would I?

A few months ago I called 911 4 times over the course of an hour, as a teenager was looking into all the cars on my block, and no cops came until 1 hour later and did not even stop, they drove right down the block. We had been having cars broken into constantly, and all they were stealing was loose change. My first call was at 11:30, when my neighbor had heard someone in the driveway and called me to see if I heard it, we both looked out and saw this kid looking into the cars, 1st call. The 2nd call was about 10 minutes later when he started to go into the driveways. The third call was another 10 minutes later when he came out of the driveway holding something and moving fast down the block, I had given the address of the home where the kid had just come out of the driveway. At that time, I started to follow and he headed down Dictum Court, I lost track of him, when I came home and placed my fourth call, to the precinct, who in turn told me that I had to call 911 again, as he was not sure if it came thru.

I called Community Affairs the next day, and was told that “I am sure the cops did show up, that is what everbody says.” Funny, I did see them show up and keep driving, they did not even stop at the address I had given.

Anon- I cannot man up and grab him, as I am a female, a middle aged female at that. I did not know if he was carrying anything on him, I called the cops and tried to follow him at a distance.

If you put a camera, any camera, flat up against a window it will shoot through and take a perfect picture without anyone knowing it. A picture speaks a thousand words.
