Seba Avenue Park to Get Traffic Signal

dik-KhandiscussingGerritsenandSebaAveIntersection3-31-11

Yes you read that right folks! Seba Avenue Park is getting its own pedestrian traffic signal at Seba Avenue. This seems to be the month of Traffic Signals.

Councilman Fidlers Press release:

“I am pleased to announce that the meeting that I held with DOT Commissioner Jeanette Sadik Khan a few weeks ago at Seba Avenue has borne fruit: DOT will be installing a pedestrian signal at Gerritsen Avenue and Seba Avenue so that parents will have traffic signal assistance in crossing Gerritsen to the beautiful park that we have been building at Seba Avenue.

The light will be a steady green for cars on Gerritsen, except when the push button is activated by pedestrians which will change the light so that people can cross Gerritsen safely.

It has been my pleasure to secure funding so that Gerritsen Beach’s community park can be attractive and useful to parents and children in the community. Since many users will be taking small children to the tot lot and swings, not having a traffic light at the intersection seemed like an invitation to danger. I want to thank Commissioner Sadik Khan for coming, seeing with her own eyes, and doing the right thing.

I also want to extend thanks to Assemblyman Alan Maisel, Congressman Anthony Weiner and Senator Marty Golden for their support and assistance in getting this done. As always, a united community working for something that just makes good common sense is a great formula for getting things done.”

If the light is a STEADY GREEN, how does a car get out of Seba Ave. Shouldn’t the light be a flashing yellow on Gerritsen and a flashing red to Seba ?

o my God People are you all the dumb. There will be a strip in the road on Seba that will trigger the light to change when a car rolls up on it.There is only about 1000000 intersections with this device. You need to leave the beach more.

Are you sure you want to put your reputation on the line and predict that the city would do something so logical as put a strip in the road to trigger a traffic light?
        Think again.
In lieu of all the nutty things this city (traffic department) inflicted on Gerritsen Avenue in the past, I’d be a little hesitant.

        It’s a pedestrian operated pushbutton, it’s between cross-streets.

Seba is too narrow to have a strip in the road for that to work. Cars turning from the avenue would constantly trip it. Are YOU that dumb?

I don’t get it. Nobody is ever happy!! All you hear is “It’s about the kids, safety for the kids.”Well, I think its a good thing. The kids can now cross the Ave to go to the park “safely.” It may not be all you hoped for, but its more than we had. They’re installing the flashing light near the school, putting a light on Seba. Be grateful that we’re getting this much. This opens the door for the community to get more.

  • sorry for you all

Seems to me that this should be the traffic light mounted mid-way between Seba & Cyrus. That way there would no interference with East-West traffic.Cars heading North-South would only get a Red/Yellow/Green…And have DOT install a crosswalk to the park..Or down further between Seba & Lois..Same marked crosswalk..

It is Amazing how much time and money the city will spend to Avoid giving the community what they asked for. Lets analyze this: We asked for One Traffic light, they repaved the Avenue and repainted lines making it from 4 to 2 lanes with turning lanes and bicycle lanes (which are useless cause every kid I see uses the middle of the street now), now they tore up the street to put in yellow lights. One lousy traffic light would have done fine.

Thank you Lew for all you do but I have to wonder, what will be the punishment for the asshole who disregards this and kills and Mom and her kids walking across the street? You know that will happen because Gerritsen Beach is full of these assholes!! Yes yes they are all our lovelies!!!! Just this week I can’t tell you how man men and women too didn’t like the speed I was going. I was going the speed I should have been. They beeped, rode up my ass, went around me both on the right and left side in the middle of the street!! Road rage watch out. My middle finger hurts for the amount of times I used it this week. It’s really just kind of crazy I can’t explain it. What is going through their very narrow little useless brainless minds? Nothing.

I would like people to comment on what the big deal is about putting a legitimate traffic light half way down the avenue!!! Please explain how this can be a bad thing?
