I’m happy that they’re finally going to start the work for this much-needed light. Unfortunately at the present time it will only be a blinking yellow light much less than what we really need their.
Hopefully the next thing the City will work on is enforcing the traffic regulations during school hours and stopped this circus atmosphere during release time.
I should live so long :-)

Lets not forget a flashing yellow light is not a red light or a stop sign. A flashing yellow light does not require a driver to stop just to exercise caution. The quickest solution is to eliminate the circus of cars doble and triple parked both in the morning and at dismissal.

Schools in Staten Island have a place for parents to pull up and drop their children off the principal and an aide take the children out of the car they are walked to the school where another aide or teacher sends them to there class .It is safe for both children and parents and works great.

Long Island has that too BUT we’re not in Kansas.. Do you really think the staff from this school are going to stand outside at a curb line and wait for children> I’ve never seen any staff standing outside the property / fence line in front of the school

      • Unknown

Absolutely right – no staff member or teacher is going to stand outside. They get paid like every other worker. It’s the parent responsibility to take the child from his dismissal line – not that of the teacher. This is ridiculous. And for the person who mentions double and triple park — where in the world do you want us to put the cars when we have small children in the car and picking up an older sibling – four miles away? This is such utter nonsense. Move the heck away from Gerritsen if you don’t like the school being there. Why did you buy your house where you did, idiot.

YOUR ridiculous! First of all, the principal of the school could absolutly set it up so that all available staff members are outside to assist with entry and egress. It is up to her and I am sure that she is aware of the problems and inconvienience to the community and CHOOSES to do nothing about it. Secondly,’where do you want us to put the cars?’ Seriously? We want you to put them in legal parking places and walk if you have to a short distance to the school. I just also don’t get why all these children have to be picked up. Up until 2nd grade they can take the school bus and after that they should be learning to take the city bus and be allowed to grow up. This is why so many kids are social retards. Kids NEED to be able to travel and conduct themselves in public without holding Mommy’s hand forever. No one has a problem with the school being there, but most normal people resent the inconsideration of the parents who double/triple park creating an unsafe mess up there twice a day. Is it really too much to ask that you park legally and drive legally without the wild u-turns and your cellphone pressed up against your ear?

Maybe you need to Calm Down a bit. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

There are always plenty of spots on the side of the park. Put the younger child in a stroller and walk a few feet. You may be saving a childs life. The double and triple parking is bad enough, but then someone trying to squeeze out of one of those spots while someone else is getting kids in and out is so dangerous, you can’t see a small child. You people will not be happy until a child is hurt or God forbid killed. Why is it so much of an inconvenience to park a block away. Alot of times I walk up to school, see double parked cars at the school exits, and empty legal spots right across the streets. Its all about being lazy and the selfish all about me attitude. Our children are supposed to be the most precious things in our life. Why don’t we treat them as such? Because we are too lazy to walk a block? I find it ridiculous that people find it better to be right there, but putting the lives of our precious babies in jeopordy. When did laziness and selfishness become more important than the safety of all our children?

Leave the car at home and walk your lazy self. Its a community school obsviously you live in the community, get some exercise

      • bob

You still can!t change the fact that it works and is safer for both parent and child I am sure that if parents ask the school to do it they will .This way no one will get tickets and no child will get hurt.

    • kerrin o'neill

thats how it is by my sister in long island too. It makes sense and makes drop off easier for moms with smaller ones in the car.

Speed bumps would solve the speeding problem!

  • back weeds

    o wow so the lazy parents win .1 small block u have a crosswalk& a light & a gaurd

  • GB Mom

I thank them for the effort, but I really don’t think it will help. These parents are already disregarding the signage that has been put in place, consistantly making u-turns right under the signs. As for an aid or someone taking the children at the curb, the previous parent coordinator Sharon Schiano was out there every morning. She opened the car door, took the children out, closed the door and walked them to the back door of the school, and you could pull away knowing your children were safe. I think it worked very well. Unfortunately, the only thing that will stop it is continous police presence giving out tickets. If nobody is enforceing it, why bother?

  • Anonymous

OK so that is great news. Unfortunately it will not solve the problem but a least it’s a step in the right direction.

“Nothing can stop the person with the right mental attitude from achieving their goal; nothing on earth can help the person with the wrong mental attitude.”We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.

  • I HATE THE N.Y. POST

THey drive through that intersection with a crossing guard standing in the middle of the street with her arms extended. They are not going slow down for the yellow.

    • Duck

The reality is this, the school crossing guard is not suppose to direct vehicular traffic in any way. They have absolutely not trainning. The school crossing guard is posted at schools to help cross “school children” not grown ass adults and parents. With that said, since it seems every parent who has children in 277 either drives and illegally parks in front of the achool or walks their children to school then there appears to be no need for a crossing guard for the children. They are all in the hands of a parent.

    • Anonymouse

Why do you hate the N. Y. Post?

  • LET ME SEE IF I GOT THIS RIGHT…..
    1. People double and triple park outside the school
    2. People go through the red light
    3. people go when the crossing guard tells them to stop
    4. illegal u turns
    5. speeding
the flashing yellow light is gonna help??????
    I’m confused!!

    • trainman

You’re right it’s not going to help much regarding the
ME ME ME attitude concerning school safety.

It will help with the parents and grand-parents that WALK their children to school using that traffic light.

  • Enough

I watched 2 cars with kids in it the other day fly past a school bus with the red flashing lights and and stop sign out .Idiot awards .Probably the same people who want another light .

  • bob

I saw in Travis SI outside a public school flashing lights and posted signs telling drivers that when school is in session the speed is 15 miles per hour.I am sure your councilman would do this for you, get a drop off section for children and parents slow cars down so that both children and parents will be safe.I don!t know how they handle the problem of picking up children after school but I will find out.

  • Anonymous

why can’t they just put up a real light?

  • Frank

I do not understand the big fight to put up a traffic light by a school or somewhere on the avenue!! It could only serve to help our situation and save lives. Why is the city fighting us on this so much.

  • annonymous

More money has been spent on painting the lines in the street, installing the rubber markers and reinstalling them after sanitation rips them out, and installing more glass bus stop stations than what it would cost to simply install 2 traffic lights on the avenue. This is what we call a power struggle in the political world, some idiot who has power and authority did not like the way he/she was approached and decided to shove it in our faces by wasting our tax dollars and doing something that makes no sense but simply shows that they are trying something. Just like the police department when we as a community complain about police presense they send traffic down here to ticket us to show they were here. Same concept.

  • annonymous

We need to protest the park and similar things but the city knows that we have jobs and children and no time to spend protesting so they get away with it. Spend one day slowing traffic by gathering with signs and you will accomplish so much more than our community board could do in years of rationalizing. Unfortunately we take every child injured, every dangerous situation and shove it to the side because it is easier to just let the kids play until it is your kid that get seriously injured. When does it stop

  • annonymous

if enough people agree I will organize a day or two to stop the madness give us a new/safe park it is sinking

  • Anonymous

I am really getting extremely annoyed with all of this crao! The parents up at the school for drop off and pick up actually make the situation on the avenue extremely dangerous for everyone! There is absolutely no reson for double sometimes even triple parked cars, haven’t we learmed our lesson in regards to double/triple parking! Doing this puts everyone in danger. It prevents drivers from seeing if anyone is coming out between the cars. And it also forces people to walk either in the street or between the cars. I have seen more parents speed up the avenue bust a u turn into oncoming traffic and then proceed to cut people off without their child properly in a seat belt like it is their right to do so. Telling everyone else in this community including the buses that theire time is more important than ours and their lives are more important as well. This morning while leaving the beach a parent proceeded to make a u turn infront of me which there were no cars behind me. And then continued on his path to cut off another car and double park to let his kid out infront of the school. Mean while. The crossing guard was trying to cross kids and perple totally ignored her not listening to any of her commands to stop so she can cross the kids! One of these days someone in such a rush to drop off their kid is going to seriously hurt if not kill someone else because of their total disregard towards others! How is this light going to help? I think it will just make the avenue that much more of a dangerous avenue. It is amazing how there has not been more deadly accidents on the avenue.
Maybe we can write a letter to Mrs fish and ask her to change to drop off location in the morning.

Am I the only one who feels as though people have gotten out of hand when it comes to dropping off and picking up their children up at the school? How about the cops give them tickets. Instead of sitting on the avenue with a radar giving people tickets for going 3 miles over the speed limit.

here’s another idea: STOP MAKING U TURNS INFRONT OF THE SCHOOL I KNOW YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO GET TO SCHOOL AND YOU HAVE TO GET TO WORK. BUT GUESS WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO GET TO WORK TOO! STOP

    • kerrin o'neill

the school itself definately needs to assist in drop off…pick up may be more complicated but the school can definitely assist in drop off.

  • Beachwalker

At the community board meeting, Lew Fidler said he was meeting with the DOT head, Kahn, at Seba Ave this am to try and get them to go for an on demand traffic light for Seba Park. Now, I’m sure there wasn’t much traffic there for her to see, she needs to see what a dragstrip the Ave is on weekends. But they must have had to drive passed the mess by 277 to go see Seba Ave. Hopefully they drove thru during the morning nightmare. Maybe something will come of it, lol, hopefully NOT bikelanes!

  • Anonymous

Lets not foget the light, its been 3 weeks

  • Anonymous

I guess the light has been forgotten…. On the other note I counted 9 double parked cars opposite the school this morning and then watched as 3 of them made ILLEGAL U Turns to jockey their asses in front of the school.

  • Anonymous

It was a pleasure driving on the avenue this week, no stress, no double and triple parking idiots or zombies crossing in the middle of the block with kids.
