I’m wondering if they’re still trying to open as a charter school so that the taxpayers can foot the bill for their private Turkish education.

Oh really? So what is the ethnic makeup of the students and teachers? You can get this info for any DOE school, but Brooklyn Amity doesn’t have the the breakdown on the website.

I don’t understand why they can’t put something in the neighborhood that might be USEFUL… perhaps a market?

Not that I do not find a school useful, I just do not feel that a private school best serves the needs of this community.

When this school was located at St. Thomas Aquinas, it was also open to all but a Turkish flag decorated the stage in the auditorium and the windows facing the schoolyard. Turkish was the language taught. About a year and a half ago, a group formed by members of the board of this private school petitioned the Board of Regents to be considered for charter status and to be located in the old Brook Theater building. That location probably fell through after their charter appeal failed. Good luck to them as long as public money isn’t funding this.

It will be interesting to see if they paint a bike lane or add cross walk lights on Knapp Street for the students’ use. Some people really pick up speed heading for the Belt Parkway.

I wonder if the Turkish owners realize it is being built on a filled in piece of land known as “Hog Creek” for the pig farms, that existed there around the turn of the century.

I hadn’t stopped to think about how awful it will be to get on the westbound Belt at rush hour! What a mess!
Thanks for that little bit of Gerritsen Beach history, enough already. I thought it was very interesting.

My point in mentioning “Hog Creek” was that Muslims do not want anything to do with pigs..Farming,slaughtering or processing of pork is something. That no matter how long ago it was done still taints the area and the land beneath it. It was not a history lesson…

and I proved that you were correct about the area… and there is nothing wrong with learning some history of the area you live in.

If they are going to rebuild and make a school for ALL children, if it’s a private school, how does anyone apply and where and when?

Make a school for ALL children? Pretty soon all these foreigner children will be ALL the children. There’s so much I can say here but I’ll get just as many hate replies as one backing me up. So I’m moving… Between this crap, our own neighbors assaulting one another, kids terrorizing pregnant women. There’s so much good and potential here, but it’s time to move on. No area, no town, no state is perfect, but this whole area is going down hill fast…

February 7, 2011 at 12:23 am · Reply. Hey MJ – funny how there are no problems with the “foreigner” children – unlike the trash in the beach who turn a blind eye to what their kids do. It's probably best that you move. Just remember that you can take the girl out of the trailer… lol. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 5 . [...]

Let’s not forget about the traffic jams to get to the belt that it will create… Not to mention how unsafe it will be for these children…. the main entrance should be on voohries ave.
