Five Days Later: This Guy

DSC_1772
While all if not most of the beach has been plowed Canton Ct. between Cyrus and Seba Av has not been plowed because of this unregistered – no plate – range rover.

Coming in via email

This selfish car owner(who was part of your cone story) left his car there the night of the storm and walked home. Now he is not even home to move the car. No effort has been made. Now we are one of the only blocks that cant get plowed. We still have THREE feet of snow on the block! They did put a single Delaware plate on it yesterday maybe so it does not get towed. Multiple calls to 311 and to the 61 desk have gone answered

He needs his ass beat, or the car removed piece by piece. He has told some people that it won’t start, told some people that he lost the key… I don’t care what the excuse is but it has got to go.

I reported it to 311 twice now. A man had to CARRY his sick son to the doctor because there was no other way out of here.

What, Kelly, would make a ‘right’? Do you really think a person too arrogant and rude to even make an attempt to gig out his vehicle is going to goo door to door on Canton and offer reimbursement for lost wages? Other blocks nearby were cleared while our block was (and still is) overlooked due to this man’s disregard for others.

Cars were scattered around the entire City preventing plows from moving, this neighborhood is no worse. Give me a break, this car is stuck like hundreds of others in NYC.

People keep bitching about the neighborhood, when its one of the better places in the City. Sometimes I wonder if its a stratergy to keep perspective buyers away being that this place is a steal. lots of land, low prices, good school, etc. When someone asks where I live I say Gerritsen Beach, if they mention the issue with kids, then I tell them there are some young punks that all think they’re Eminem, but they’re basically harmless. Its a quiet, clean place with friendly neighbors.

If you think the way these kids are acting is Harmless you need to get in touch with reality. There is no excuse for this kind of behavior. This is exactly whats wrong here in the Beach, a lot of People think this place is so Good and Nice but refuse to accept the fact that things like this are going on. Maybe one of these out of control punks might be your kid. That would explain your comments. Stop the excuses and get control of your children before someone else does.

For the most part harmless, I’m not originally from the neighborhood but pelting buses with snowballs is a New York tradition. I would agree that if these kids start hitting cars and people then folks need to step in and spank, call cops etc. But I’m not going to pile on the nieghborhood because of that. I also hate littering, for the most part this is a clean neighborhood, the weeds litter is not just the kids, I have yelled at grown men I’ve seen littering in the park; men not from this neighborhood. My daughter is home most of the time and when she hangs with friends they are not from GB. I’m trying to keep things in perspective.

I really Do not want to debate this issue. All I am saying is that the way Children act is a direct result of their upbringing. The fact remains this type of behavior is going on and it is getting worse. When I visit friends in other communities and states and tell them about this, they are shocked. That is unless they live in the Hoods of LA or DC. My son and daughter are both in Collage on scholsrships one at The University of Florida and the other at NYU. They never acted this way when they were growing up in the Beach. The old saying you get what you give most of the time holds true.

WOW! How blatently inconsiderate of this person to do this to his neighbors. Is he an old timer? If that’s the case then I could understand a little bit for him leaving it there but not for this amount of time. If they are a younger person then they really should be ashamed of themselves. There is absolutely no excuse for his actions.

For some reason, most russians are very nasty and they have that better than everyone else attitude. We don’t want or need selfish idiots like that in our neighborhood. Losing the key is BS, and so is the car not starting. Call a lock smith, ask anyone on the block to give you a jump start or a hand to shovel it out. I am sure most would, instead of being inconvenienced by an inconsiderated jerk. Most people do the right thing. If this jerk can’t, keep calling 311 and the 61. Have him ticketed daily.

Lets not generalize here the stories on this site show a reasonable balance between the douches and those that are decent and help their neighbors. I worked with quite a few people digging out an entire block and with others digging out cars stuck in the street.

The problem with some is they have been conditioned to rely on the state for everything which causes them to seize up when they actually have to do for themselves. Then there are those that are just arrogant, self centered, and have no consideration for others. I am happy my neighbors are the considerate and very helpful ones, I think that stems from a mutual respect.

I have lived in the Beach for 18 years and I have met some wonderful people. Of Course I have also met some real jerks. We are senior citizens and the little salt we had from last year did not last. It got so bad I was using kitty litter to try and stop the ice. Well what do you know? My husband was going to the store when he stopped to talk to a neighbor we did not know, who was cleaning his area. I guess my husband asked him if he knew where we could buy some and that wonderful man told my husband not to worry he had enough to give us a bag full. He refused payment. I don’t know his name but its the house on the corner of Aster with the white fence. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Why dint we start a column telling of things like this so the good people of Gerritsen Beach get the credit they deserve?

The owner of the car is arrogant, he blocks spots in front of his house with large orange pylons (not cones, PYLONS). When I moved them to park my car one night, one must have been in his driveway because his mother had to move one to get into it and she threw it into the back of my car. When I asked her why she did that, she called her son to come over. He rang my bell and then proceeded to lecture me about how I cannot park in ‘his’ spot, that the THREE spots in front of his house were ‘his’, how his father needs to park his oversized van in front of his house…I told him that his father can park on Seba when there are no spots on the block like everyone else. He then cursed me and when I calmly asked him to watch his language because I had three small children ages seven and under listening from the top of the stairs in my home, he continued to curse me. I then told him to leave and he told me I’d be sorry. If Italian and Irish immigrants were half this arrogant back in the day they would have been run out of town on a rail. I guess today’s foreigners think they are too privileged to abide by our laws (not blocking spots, not creating safety hazards by blocking entire streets, etc.). On a lighter note, a friend on the block just emailed me at work to tell me it’s being towed, so yay! :)

there is a simple solution if everyone could respect each other. park one car on the block and keep the others off the block. then there is a spot for everyone in front of their home. if someone takes that spot don’t do it to someone else. instead shove a potato up the tailpipe and park off the block until the car is moved.

Our court finally got plowed last night at 1am so am happy I can now try to get our car out. But! Does anyone ever remember not having mail for 3 business days? I thought the mail always gets through rain, sleet, snow etc. 3 days – I cannot remember this ever happening before. This hurts especially when waiting for a check. And on the 4th day the mail resumed, hopefully!

The same asshole lets his dog shit around the neighborhood without picking up after it too. He had a friend come over once hit someone’s car and they essentially yelled at the women when she complained calling her “trash.” Hey, if there are so many bad-ass kids in Gerritsen, why don’t do some good social justice instead of trying to hurt innocent people. why are there out of state plates on this vehicle?

If you become a resident of NYS, you have 30 days after you become a resident to register your vehicle in NYS. If you are a resident of NYS and you get a vehicle from another state, you must register the vehicle in NYS.

Definition of a Resident. If you become a resident of NYS, you must exchange your driver license and vehicle registration from another state for a NYS driver license and vehicle registration within 30 days. If you have a driver license from another state, you must get a driver license from NYS within 30 days after you become a resident of NYS. If you have a vehicle registration from another state, you must get a vehicle registration from NYS within 30 days after you become a resident of NYS.

Section 250 (5) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law defines the term “resident.” The law defines a resident as a person who lives in NYS with the intent to make NYS a “fixed and permanent” place to live. To live in a house, a home, an apartment, a room or other similar place in NYS for 90 days is considered “presumptive evidence” that you are a resident of NYS. A police officer can use this evidence as the reason to issue a traffic ticket if you drive in NYS without a driver license or vehicle registration issued by NYS.

Hold on a second? Did I just read that? A Good Samaritan
plowed the STREET in front of their home for the city and you
expect them to plow your part of the street too just because they
can? That’s bullshit. Certainly it would have been a fine and
upstanding thing to clean the entire block but it’s not their

I’m always willing to hear both sides of the story. My question is: Was there a reason you, friends, neighbors you’re friendly with, etc. could not have shoveled the Range Rover out, shoveled an adjacent “parking spot” out, put the car in neutral, and pushed it into said spot? I assume RRs have keypad entry systems (b/c you lost your key/keyless entry beeper and couldn’t get in that way). If not, how about a locksmith to pop the door, so you could get in, put it in neutral, and push it out of the way? Not saying I would not have taken the steps you did, but curious if you tried those described above since they are a lot easier.

As expected, I don’t “know” the systems of RRs, BMW, Mercedes, largely b/c I’ve never really cared for them (I would only imagine using a RR on safari; wife loves them all, though). For the price, however, I would expect those companies to do my bidding. Guess not, and thus my continued dislike for said cars.

Still, no keypad entry system to get in and pop it into neutral? Guessing keypad “yes,” though a key may be needed for the “popping” to shift to neutral.

Lesson learned: Always have two sets of keys.

First of all, my kids are 2 and 4, so they are not pack rats. I do my best to keep them very active so that they don’t become part of that crowd. I meant that for this person who inconvenienced an entire block touting how great a neighbor he is, all the while the entire blocks dislikes him for his arrogant selfish ways. So, if he thinks GB is so bad, then he should move. Unfortunately, GB is very against anyone not of their own (meaning born and bread in GB), no matter what their nationality. If you are not inbread to the neighborhood from the beginning of time, you are not welcome. Thank God I live on a great block with great neighbors!

I feel bad for you because you have been subject to vandalism which, speaking from experience, is an awful, helpless feeling. This outrage is due to the way this article was approached & if you TRULY did all you could do then I do feel bad that you have been targeted. That said, blocking a gate is not illegal & you should have your gate swing inward in case it does get blocked-driveways, on the other hand, are different. In addition to my ’2 cents’ about that I think you should know that putting cones up to save a parking spot in front of your house isn’t right (& you could get in trouble for stolen city property)but at least it is your house, but putting it in front of a neighbors house is another—its outright rude if you didnt speak with them about it. BTW-I’m still not sure if I am speaking to the proper homeowner-I am unfamiliar with the address.

Yea, How bout livin on Opal ct, where for the past 3 storms we were never plowed, cleaned or even had the city make the effort. We have a DSNY supv on the block and that doesnt help, 4 kids under 3 yrs of age, 2 Cancer patients, and 3 older men, who shovel, and I fear for thier health and ask them to stop so I can do it, which of course they refuse. Now for the second time I had to shovel my cross street of Just ct, so cars, not just mine, can get off the block. I understand that this is not a priority street, but 3 blizzards later and atill not 1 F-in truck to clean. Not sure who to call anymore, but I do know that I pay way too much in income tax to have to go in my pocket and pay a private person tp clean the CITY street. Also I wanna give a personal FUCK YOU, to whoever decided that when they were diggin their car out, that they had to throw thier snow right on the corner of Just and Seba, where I had shoveled for 4 hours to clean the street, by hand and by myself.Lust wanna say you suck, you selfish A-hole. I had to take another 2 hours to remove your snow. Hope you had fun unburyin your car again, figured you wanted all your snow back that you left on the clean coener of Just and Seba. Other than that, I wanna thank all those who offered help to me and all our neighbors when they saw help may have been needed. We’ll get through this, just remember that Opal ct will probably be snowed in til July. Its funny that Opal between Madoc and the channel is clean but not between Madoc and Just, oh and the other half of Just that I just didnt have the energy to do. Not meanin to get at anyone here, cept for the before mentioned, selfish prick, who now has to redig out his/her car. You deserve it. To everyone else, hope it gets better for all of you, even if a little at a time. I remind myself, its snow, not a nuclear winter

Looking at the pic, easy solution, if the Rover can’t be moved then move the white van (which is probably a commercial vehicle illegally parked LOL) This wasn’t the crime of the year down here or the inconvinence of the century, there was an obsvious solution. Now that you mention kids robing houses , I have been robbed previously myself on 60 Canton , kids got tru the window and stole only electronics and games and xbox ps3 , not touching anything else so it had to be kids , it happened on memorial day of 2009 I.still remember this day , and their parental don’t say nothing these huligans kids when they rob ppl , or break bus stops , or ppl windows on seba , but everyone gets mad at me for loosing keys from the range and doing everything possible to move the car , and decided that they can go fuk with someone else’s property and break things off the car , that are very expensive to replace , I just paid only for they key 350 plus another 150 for someone to come to the range and program it and expedite it since I wanted it done ASAP and dealer was closed Mon , now I have to pay even more since someone decided its gona be fun to mess it up , happy holidays everyone … I believe in karma so the person that did this is gona get what he deserves !

10 years too late for what? You’re not Irish and I’m not the Russian in the above posts. It’s great that the doors are open, now maybe the ‘old stock’ rats will find some other neighborhood to scatter to and muck up. Perhaps I’m smoking something your own kind is selling right under your nose in OUR neighborhood. Good luck with the America you’re so concerned about. I’m all for shutting down the borders, English only etc. I’m also for educating our kids and raising them with moral fiber. Obviously the ‘old stock’ has failed at that in this neighborhood. Rather than ignorant statements about non-American looking people at the bus stop folks here should be more concerned about that.

I agree with Arthur. If the man did lose his key and did everything in his power to get the car moved, they he deserves the benefit of the doubt. I know how frustrating it can be to the rest of the neighbors, but try to look at it from his side.

I am quite troubled about all the references to this man’s ethnicity. An a-hole is an a-hole, no matter where a person was born.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 6 Thumb down 7

The bottom line is there are two sides to every story and very few posting here know all the facts. Seems to me that the car was legitimately stuck as nobody is going to leave a nice car exposed in the middle of a sidewalk and in front of a street completely blocking it. Seems like an adjacent van could have been dug out and moved but it wasn’t. Also looks like this guy made a real effort to get things fixed but frustrated neighbors boiled over and did something stupid. It probably doesn’t help that the person has a rep for not picking up after his dog and parking three cars on the street but who really knows if thats true. I think everyone needs to chill out. Maybe the article could have been written in a different tone, a tone that sought help from neighbors to perhaps dig it out or locate the owner. Maybe the owner could have then been alerted by a reader, or someone come out to put a cardboard on the window apologizing, explaining he was working on a solution, and putting a phone number on it. This is all Monday morning quarterback stuff but vandalism is not the answer. Adults have to behave if the kids are going to learn anything.

On another note, the story about the break-ins are disturbing, if I catch anyone in my house no matter what the age, all bets are off. All this talk about Russians is sad, we all know its not Russian or East European kids causing problems in the neighborhood so its best not to throw stones. Balance people, keep your cool. Chill out for the New Year.

The article isn’t moronic, that wasn’t my point. I just thought it could have be written with a more helpful tone. Obviously the editor has the right to write anything he wants but I’d prefer reporting that is a little more neutral in tone, and detailed with as many facts as possible, especially when it comes to a neighbors dispute. There are always two sides to a story. Sadly this comment section has spiralled into something ugly.

How can a community that supports a great school like 277 allow the kids to turn into savages?

It is nice to see pics of Resurrection- I suggest that some of you parents bring the kids on Sunday to start the new year fresh.

I think you all should remember that the street is not a parking lot and NOBODY has the right to claim a spot in front of their house. Nice, considerate neighbors worked out this idea that each homeowner should have a spot near his home. It worked for many years but now homes have five cars or more this is becoming difficult and causing friction between old and new residents.

Someone posted a very sensible solution above… one car in front of your home, maybe two IF your block has the space for it but otherwise the additional cars should be parked on the avenues. Walking to your home from any avenue around here is very easy and safe. That’s just common courtesy.

Well it seems like the unregistered/out of state/no plate Range Rover is the icon for this person’s self centered behavior.

IF he had been a GOOD neighbor, everyone in the area would have jumped in to help but it seems like he has been a d-ck to everyone around by reserving parking spots, letting his pet do his business without cleaning up and his communication skills seem more THUG then helpful community member.

Perhaps a bit of a change in his attitude and more of a good neighbor would help him next time this happens.

The whole “owning” the parking spot in front of your house is ridiculous. I live on the no parking side of my court. So where is my spot located? I’ve had neighbors with a two car garage and a double driveway who owned 3 cars get mad at other neighbors for parking in their so called “spots” on the street. All my plates are legit those were Delaware car dealer plates i had only one set of keys, since most cars sold at the auction today only contain one key!!! If i had a spare my car would of never been there in the first place , i would of went and gotten a spare same sun night and moved the car out of there.. Thank You Happy New Yrs let this new yrs be better than the rest. We can all just communicate more and work things out instead of damaging ppls things.

As you can see from my other posts, I am open to hearing you out. I expected the key was likely needed to pop it into neutral. Having it sit there, regardless of the issues, is clearly an inconvenience, and I assume you can agree with that as well.

Lesson #1 – Even if a car only comes with 1 key, get a 2nd made ASAP after purchase, you never know what might happen. Would this exact same problem happen if you locked your keys inside the car? Just food for thought.

Lesson #2 – While I can’t attest to others’ statements, if people offer help, take it. Pass it forward, i.e. if someone helps shovel you out, offer the same token of kindness to another. These things might seem trivial, but they make a community stronger and less confrontational.

From what I have read in the above posts it seems that more than the fact the car was stuck is that the person who owns it apparently under normal circumstances does not have any consideration for his neighbors, because knowing the people in the beach if he was a decent neighbor he would have gotten more than enough help either to move his car or less complaints about his situation… maybe a lesson should be learned from this
