Old Section Resident Gets Sanitation Ticket for Parking on Sidewalk

Sanitation Car

If read that headline you should be asking yourself the Old Section has sidewalks? Well, no they don’t – at least not really. But a sanitation enforcement agent believes there is enough of a sidewalk to issue a parking violation for “Sidewalk”

According to our tipster the parked car was parked a good distance from the intersection – more than enough for a garbage truck to make the turn.

The summons says “Code 50 “Sidewalk” Sub Section 4-08″ and is for $115

According to the city Code 50 is: “Stopping, standing or parking in a crosswalk. Note: Crosswalks are not always identified by painted street markings.” I didn’t realize that Canton Ct at Bartlet Place had a unmarked crosswalk.

Essentially this means that everyone on Canton Ct and entire Old Section is parking on the sidewalk. The Old Section already can’t park on dead ends, what are they to do now!?

We will keep you informed on the status of this ticket.

Based on the story your tipster was talking about the intersection and not the sidewalk or the crosswalk, which the crosswalk might be a good 12 feet from the intersection. Leave the g men alone, you never have heard compaints before about them so obsviously someone must have done the wrong thing. Jes they write one ticket and you’re all over them, let them pick up the trash and be gone

I should of included the whole email but the intersection was just a guess on the tipsters part because they can not imagine why they got this ticket.

This is not a post complaining about the sanitation workers. It's a post about maybe an overzealous sanitation enforcement agent – they are separate.

There has been many complaints regarding parking and garbage trucks. Specifically on Bartlett. See here:

We are getting ticketed this seems very unfair to me with the streets down here everything about parking etc is hard…so if we are getting harrassed than I have a complaint about Sanitation trucks! They have hit my fence numerous times , I have tried to get the Sanitation department to pay to fix the damage they have done ,but missed the court date because I did not know when it was ( never notified) and they dismissed the case! . I am not home when they collect the garbage. Time to get a camera on the house and video them hitting my fence.( probably won't hold up in court anyway !!)

My understanding from the information provided is that the summons was issued by a Samtitaion supervisor not any enforcement agent. Also I now see the "tipster" is same person who got the ticket, oh thats a reliable non bias source

Yes, I do believe we are being ticketed unjustly. Look at the commercial trailer on the corner of Beacon and Cyrus. That trailer has bee parked there for over 2 months and nothing is done about it. 311 and 61st have been notified and still this trailer is there. Do we only have selected tickets issued?

Just go ahead and get it over with, get the info and details as to how to build individual parking garages on top of all the houses so each and every street in the neighborhood is clear of any violation…Jesus man enough is enough..Things are getting outta control now.. How can something be right for so long and all of a sudden so wrong? Whats the answer here!!?

many years ago they had smaller trucks, but they got bigger so they wouldn't have to go to dumps so often

This site sucks!! Just like to stop by and say so. This site had been on a steady decline for a while now. By the way you obviously have some against city workers.

There are signs on Bartlett restricting parking on the corners to allow the sanitation trucks to make the turns. If you park there you deserve a ticket. Stupid, lazy or inconsiderate drivers often park there on pickup days.

I can tell you for sure there's no signs on Canton and Bartlett indicating no parking on the corners…

Someone took the sign down on the corner of Frank and Bartlett and there are cars parked there all the time – look at the fence it now leans to allow people plenty of room to turn. Also look at the way the person parks on Noel you can't make the turn there half the time he sticks out so far all the time.

Call dot and have the sign put back up. Don't blame the city when people just take this stuff down. Next topic!

  • With all these comments I still can't figure out if the person was breaking the law or not. Was he or was he not parked on the sidewalk?

If you lived in the old section you'd know the sidewalk is the street! There is no difference…

Sounds like there are "sidewalks" (concrete slabs) but no curbs. If that is the case, I guess it comes down to the legal definition of a sidewalk. Just because everyone parks on them all the time does not make it legal. If exceptions need to be made, the City needs to designate areas where it is permissible to park on them.

No, there are no concrete slabs, only asphalt, there is no sidewalk at all. Why do you waste your time commenting on a site for a neighborhood that you obviously don't live in? Really, why do you care where we park or what the legalities are?

If it's only asphalt, then you are correct and should not get ticketed.

And I actually did care where you park and what the legalities are, that is until I read your response which really wasn't very smart of you. For all you know, I could have been someone in a position to help you with this or some other problem you are having with the City. But with your parochial attitude that only Gerritsen Beach residents have a right to visit and comment on your site, you know what? Now I couldn't care less what happens to you or your neighbors. Why don't you make your site private just for residents if that is what you want?

If you came to the Sheepsheadbites site or sites for other neighborhoods, you would never get the type of response that you gave me. I hope you are not representative of typical Gerritsen Beach residents, but if you are, then I hope the City keeps ticketing you and just doesn't stop.

Brooklyn Bus, As it was obvious that you had never even BEEN here, I simply asked why you would care, why you would bother commenting. I wouldn't go on Sheepshead Bites and start commenting on something that I didn't have the facts about or something that was none of my business. I have commented on general Sheepshead Bay issues and been attacked by the ultra liberal people there, no wonder Sheepshead Bay is in the shape it's in now. I didn't mean to offend you, I just couldn't picture myself going onto a say Queens or Downtown Brooklyn site and making assumptions about anything that I have never seen myself, as you did. We have community groups, paid polititians and city agencies and courts to help us with this problem and quite enough interference from outside the neighborhood already. It's all the "help" and "improvements" and of course, this website, that are slowly destroying what has been a unique way of life for a hundred years. My apologies if my questions offended you.

Mr. Anonymous. First of all I wasn't making any assumptions. I was merely asking a question for clarification. What is wrong with that?

Second, you are the one who is making assumptions because I actually have driven through both the old and new sections about two years ago. I said to myself that after living in Brooklyn for 60 years and being so close to Gerritsen Beach, it was about time I see the place for myself. I just couldn't remember if there were sidewalks or not and if so whether there were curbs or not.

I'm not getting into a debate with you as to the condition of Sheepshead Bay or the people who frequent that website. I'll just say that being attacked by ultra-liberals is no different than being attacked by ultra-conservatives, but what we are talking about here is something totally different. It's the notion of whether a neighborhood exists within and for itself and doesn't welcome outsiders or whether it is part of a larger City that welcomes visitors. You obviously feel the former, that you are a community within itself and damn anyone who doesn't live here. You probably even wish that your own elected officials who solely represented Gerritsen Beach. Since you want to maintain your hundred year old unique way of life so badly, why do you even bother with the internet?

It wasn't your questions that offended me but your notion that I have no right coming to this site and am not welcome here.

Mr. Brooklyn Bus (aka Allan Rosen) There was nothing wrong with you asking, I was just wondering what your motivation was. But now that you have explained that you drove through here once 2 years ago, wow, of course your well qualified to comment and tell us what to do. Jeez, I didn't know you drove through once, that makes all the difference.

          • Looks like when I continue to post here, I will also post as Mr. Anonymous. Guess you are too scared to use your real name, huh? Is it because you people are so intolerant that you even harass your own residents when they post something controversial that goes against the grain of those with the loudest voices as another thread states? I would never want to live in such a community!!! You ought to be ashamed of yourself. I feel sorry for sensible people like beach bum who lives among you.
