The Knapp Street sanitation garage, aka BK 15, recently received 3.1 Million for landscaping and trailer renovations. Construction is currently underway
You may be asking why do I have “temporary” in quotes. Well if you didn’t know: the community was promised that this was ONLY going to be a “temporary” location until another garage was built on Neptune Avenue.
Here’s why…Back in the day when Keyspan (now National Grid) merged with Brooklyn Union Gas. Keyspan decided not to keep the Neptune Avenue Brooklyn Union Gas facility. However, The city was very interested in turning the site into a dual sanitation garage which would cover CB 13 and CB 15 (us), which desperately needed it.
As you can obviously tell, that plan never happened. In part due to the area being massively contaminated, but mainly because the city never put any money aside for the project or for a Request for Proposal to be sent out.
In the meantime BK 15 still needed temporary home, which for us turned out to be Knapp Street. Which they all said would be temporary.
Despite the mayor issuing a 5% cut city wide the other day, the city just gave the Knapp Street location 3.1 million dollars for trailer renovations and berm style landscaping around the facility.
“Berms” in landscaping are small sweeping hills that are usually created for the purpose of creating height and interest. Trailer renovation? Seriously? What could you possibly need to run a garage that is not already there?
“3.1 Million Dollar dollars means they are planning a long term stay.” Said Theresa Scavo CB 15 Chairperson. “Even if the keyspan facility was available tomorrow it would still take five years of processing to get someone going.”
We agree with CB 15 chairperson, this is a long term stay. Why would they be fixing up the place otherwise?
Our question is why would the city invest this money into a temporary location when the thought process was to move BK 15 to the Neptune Avenue facility. Personally we don’t care for the landscaping that whole strip looks like a mess and is industrial anyway it does not NEED to look good.

Thanks for the article…
Who did Sanitation tell this was only a temporary move? Was it any of our elected officials? We should be arguing and pressuring big time to get these smelly trucks the heck out of here. We already have the water treatment plant – we don't need more waste related programs taking up shop in our backyard. What do our representatives have to say about it? Maybe you should interview them and see what they have to say about it.

Will do.
How about getting some pics of the juice running out of those trucks right into shellbank creek.Next to water is not the best place for a garbage truck parking lot.Do you think?

Money for a "temporary" garage? Does Bloomberg think that we don't realize he cut funding to the hershey factory on Knapp Street. They haven't added the bleach or chemicals or whatever it is that they do to remove the smell since, I don't know when! Bloomberg has turned the whole neighborhood up to the Keyfood into a stench-filled sewer.

Agreed – lately that smell has been traveling farther. I don't know if its because of the time of year or what but I don't remember it traveling as far as it does now. I wonder if there is any periodic test that the City conducts to make sure this facility is in compliance? I encourage GB and neighboring residents to submit complaints to 311 re: the smell – stats matter.

They need to cut the sidewalk back 3-4 if they keep parking the trucks on Knapp. The right lane is way too narrow with them there.

The need to go behing the sanitiation garage and see the RAW garbage that runs directly in the creek.
Check it out after any rain. DEC,DEP etc should take a look at that before spending money on landscaping.

Maybe we can capture this on video, post it here and send it to NEWS 12. Then perhaps shove a mic in our reps faces and ask what actions they plan on taking.

Our council-men and women, really have to pay attention and do something about our neighborhood and listen to people who live here i.e. Sheepshead and Gerritsen beach. There are 3 major issues in my opinion which have to addressed: possible termination water waste treatment plant, department of sanitation’s truck parking on a prime real estate by the river (genius idea and environmently friendly), AND last but NOT LEAST, building of MOSQUE on Voorhies and E28th and a MUSLIM CULTURAL teachings center on Knapp street. what is it with muslimization here, this is christian and jewish neighborhood, and we don’t need to be woken up 4 times a day for daily islamic prayers, or have increased traffic due to a new muslim school, or have our children exposed to organization and faith that promotes vioilance, terrorizm and is assisted by Muslim Brotherhood, which is an affiliate of Hamas and Hezbollah WELL known radical and even terrorist organizations. CMON AMERICA CMON BROOKLYN, LET”S STAND UP FOR OUR NEIGHBORHOOD RIGHTS. represantatives and counsil men please take care of our area where we live, and listen to our concerns.
thank you
