News 12: Gerritsen Beach Angry that We Don’t Have Light Quick Enough

News 12 says that Gerritsen Beach is angry that we have not received the JUST announced traffic signal yet at Channel Avenue.

If News 12 wasn’t too busy stealing SheepsheadBites and GerritsenBeach.net stories maybe they would of reported the story correctly. They incorrectly reported that DOT should of had the traffic signal installed already on Channel Avenue.

In no way, shape, or form was a date given for the installation. Only that we have been approved.

Check out the report anyway. The best part is that they had a radar gun clocking people at 40 MPH and above in a school zone with a limit of 15.

? – This is a good report! It puts pressure on the DOT to move. It didn't make up a specific date the lights were supposed to be installed, cause as you pointed out there was no date given. It just expressed parents disappointment that they weren't up on the first day of school ( Which I think the light was being installed for?) Think you got a case of poacher's blues son.

To bad they weren't there earlier in the day when school opened they could've reported on how traffic is at a crawl in the morning passing the school because of the all the cars double and triple parked and obstructing traffic. maybe that can be their next story when the light is installed.

Traffic at the school has always been a nightmare, it sounds to me like flashing yellow light is a "check the block" scenario instead of fixing the problem. Granted people are trying to get places with a purpose during those hours it is the main way in or out and options are limited but lets face it, the safety of the kids is Priority nobody wants anything bad to happen. No crossing guards, no problem back in the day when I was there we had guards everywhere, remember that guys, we wore reflective belts and badges we assisted the guards. The school should provide collapsable speed bumps, place them a few feet from the crosswalks and that should slow the traffic down. Asign some of the responsible kids in the school to lay them out and collect them prior to drop off and pick up times. It might work for the time being. I dont think the article was all that bad Im sure there were details left out as usual. As most things that are needed it requires press like this for others to move quicker. Lets face it when has the Beach ever been a priority to the city anyway..

The safety of the kids is a priority, no doubt and no one will argue, so then why are they being endangered everyday with double and triple parkers and people obstructing traffic.

Where's the crossing guard this school year?!

I guess they thought that now that there will be (future tense) a yellow light we don't need a crossing guard now (present tense)?

The local precincts assign the crossing guards so I doubt they were in contact with the DOT about the light. You would think someone would have a crossing guard where there is no light

On the opening day of school I watched three women with seven or eight kids crossing at Channel and Gerritsen. The women were so busy yacking to each other they paid no attention to traffic either avenues. There was not a crossing guard in site. If safety of children is a priority it should start with the parent who should be teaching their children how to cross safely.

The 3 women were teaching the children something, the art of yapping and gossip, oh and throw in never do what I do but do as I say

News 12 was back at the school this morning watching and filming but I only saw them up by Bijou, maybe they were watching the traffic nightmare of double parkers and u turns
