It wasn’t intended but apparently after postings and subsequent comments on this site – Bergen Beach groups have decided not to come back into Gerritsen Beach.

This is great news, because of this site we have beaten back the politicial machine… The politicial supported group Melinnium Developement , a socalled "non-profit" Which was exposed as a money maker for those in the party stable…. NOW we must put pressure on the Politicians, and form our own non-profit Community Organization Or push to fund one already in existence..to keep the East side organized and clean……. We now might be able to give some paid teens and adults some much needed jobs down here…In turn bringing out some Community Spirit and Community responsability….. We now have a chance to do a much needed attitude adjustment in GB….. This truely is a good neighborhood to be in But as we who grew up and live here all know there is not much to do for young adults. This could be the opportunity we have all been looking for !!!!

That organization came in and did what the neighborhood was already doing for years until this BS website started posting BS misleading info and caused the neighborhood to split up. This Website has done nothing but cause and stir up issues and bring attention that is not needed. Who cares about what is going on with millenium, everyone should thank them for making the avenue look nice, instead you are happy they are not coming back!!???? You should have just said thank you to them. Instead, a witch hunt was launched just as every other posting on this site. Now when it all looks like crap again you will wonder why it is so bad and nobody will remember that it use to look nice until this web forum destroyed it and divided the neighborhood. This site has neioghbors fighting with neighbors, what good comes of this??

Finally, someone who sees it how it is! It seems like this site causes more controversy than anything else. Especially when it comes to other Organizations outside of Gerritsen Beach that are just trying to make a better environment for kids (ex: Bergen Beach, Millenium, Good Shepherd Sports). I find it disgusting that someone has actually said that this is "good" and that they should "stay in their own neighborhood." Way to teach tolerance to you kids. And we wonder why the world is going to hell.

This neighborhood has traditionally been extremely conservative to outside intervention. Say what you will about GB but it's the only neighborhood in all of Brooklyn and possibly the whole city that has kept its integrity regarding outside developers and charlatans throughout the years.
I have witnessed whole neighborhoods inundated with excess housing and businesses that virtually destroyed the character of those neighborhoods.
As a 35 year resident and my wife going back over 50 years, every time an organization or the city for that matter comes in with so-called improvements we always, always pay a price in one way or another for those "gifts".
The city put in a skateboard park and soon after trouble followed. Just last week we witnessed buses from day care centers dropping children off at the ball fields, the results witnessed by our residents was bags of garbage strewn all over the place.
I'm not saying every outsider who comes into the Beach is here to do us harm but considering our adjacent neighborhoods and some of the problems they have, at the very least, we should be cautious.

Trainman, do you really think there is integrity in this neighborhood?? This is not about what is right it is all about the ME..
What's right is that someone came in and cleanned up something no one else was doing and they did it without the ole pat on the back.
What's right is that someone comes to use the fields, for the purposes they are intended for – playing ball, and not destroying them with graffitti, beer bottles, dogs crapping everywhere, or dirt bikes ripping up the surfaces. Yes they may leave some trash like plastic cups and you know what its not bags of garbage, but you know what their trash won't hurt anyone and if there were trash cans up there maybe they would use them
Why has no one ever complainned about the guys from outside the neighborhood playing softball during the week on the fields with their tents and bbq, oh right they're mstly white Irish and from the FD, my bad

Play Ball–you asked if I "Really think there is integrity in this neighborhood ??", a resounding yes!
This community has a volunteer Fire Department, one of only two in this city and a Volunteer Ambulance service also fully staffed by trained dedicated volunteers and funded by this community. We have a Property Owners Association that's staffed by devoted volunteers which is fully funded by this community, an Association that is committed to maintain integrity in this community; so well funded that they have extra money to distribute to other organizations in the Beach. Organizations like the Baseball Little League, Basketball, Football and other sports also staffed by dedicated people from this community. We have a private beach called Kiddie Beach staffed by community volunteers to ensure the safety of little children who play and swim there. We also support two churches that are staffed by loyal members enhancing the quality of life in our Beach.
Are there problems here? Of course. There will always be problems in a community this size. But I believe not nearly the problems we would have if outside organizations had their way and started to take advantage of the valuable resources we have here; Valuable resources that would not have been if not for our dedicated community volunteers.
You mentioned the ballfields and their condition. You also mentioned the minimal amount of garbage that was left there by outsiders. I have to differ with that observation because I personally observed about a week ago, more than a few overflowing open black garbage bags left there… and for whom was it left? For some GB volunteers to come and clean up??? You mentioned that there were no garbage pails there. Who's supposed to maintain those garbage pails, our volunteers? Since when is having no garbage pails an excuse to discard refuge on the ground? What's wrong with taking your personal garbage home with you and disposing of it in your own pail?
This property we’re talking about is connected to Marine Park but is not serviced nor staffed on a regular basis by Park's Department personnel. It's ultimately the responsibility of Gerritsen Beach's residents to maintain this property, so don't be offended if we also want to feel we're somewhat in control of that property.

You should check your facts. The Vollies are always crying for help because they are not fully supported. The GBPOA has problems filling their Board because not enough people attend meetings they have called begging people over past few years to become Boards members just because they have enough meetings attended.

Try reading PlayBall's question again Anonymous. Nowhere in that question did be ask for a definition of INTEGRITY.
Let me help you read it again.
"Do…… You…….. Really…….. Think……..
There…….. Is ………Integrity……. In ……..this…….
neighborhood??"
You can reread it as many times as you like until it's Comprehensible.
PS now try looking up the definition for comprehensible.

Dan: I told you I knew there was a story here whe you first exposed Melinnium Developement and their parent company. It goes to show, when they are abandoning the attempts at expansion , rather than answer too many questions. Questions about a 6 million politicial funding scheme, where is the money really going, and for a "non-profit' why they give themselves fat paychecks and benefits. I would still like to find out how much is kicked back into the campagins of Weiner, Fiedler and Maisel I guess we will never know. You will also notice that they took their time before a decision was made to not come back.. Most likely they thought it was a dead story by now and we all would forget……
To the nay-sayers out there. The sky is NOT falling. Yes the weeds will grow as they have for 100 years. The difference now is maybe we can get a commitment of a few hundred thousand dollars{a pitance compared to 6 million} to "Our Own" to clean and maintain the Park Land.. Or maybe the Parks Dept will do what they are paid to do….Keep the public land clean…Either way I see GB as winners in this whole situation.. And the Politicians who do not treat us with real respect, the losers…I would guess that there will be no bonus money this year, for Paul and his merry band of politicial hacks….

I don't know what "Serious' and"Jealous much ?" expect from this website.. It should create HONEST controversy. Other wise what is the point of a Community Site. I do care about a "non-profit" like Mellinum Developement supported with a 6 million dollar politicial fund. Who pays themselves huge paychecks and benefits with public money… Then turns around and sends in "volunteers" to clean up what local groups were doing for years…. The only witch's that were hurt were the ones at Mellinium. No one to my knowledge asked them to show up and do anything. Other than some Politician looking for an expansion of his/her sphere of influence…I wouldn't worry to much about the world going to hell. I think that is a little extreme. I would worry more about why this community is unable to get funding and insurance to do the same job it was always doing ? And it is not about tolerance it's about equal treatment of Community Groups…As far as neighbors fighting neighbors over this , you must be shadow boxing.. Most agree give us the money and we will do it

Very well put, Sorry.
My definition of a "Non nonprofit" is an organization who consumes most of their income in salaries and what's left over donates to the political machine that is funding them.
First they come into a neighborhood like this and donate their time and energy to help the community. Soon after, they want a say in community affairs.
You're right, we have the capacity to do what they have done and do it better with community involvement.

When writing on this site this is always my exact point.. I and Trainman and others all see a future ,for Gerrittsen Beach and through this site ,try time and again to get through to all residents What GB needs is a coming together of ALL of the civic groups.. Down here we have a GBPOA, we have GB. Cares, The Cort Club…The Knights of Columbus The Hibernians, Two Church's , Little League teams and their parents. You also have a Parent Teachers Assoc… If we can all meet with representives of each Group set priorities for what is really important. Then we can force the Politicial Machine to listen and WE WILL GET WHAT WE WANT….. I have stated many times that the City only fears two things VOTERS and LAW SUITS ….I have often seen some here caution about what we write ,BS. The Politicians or staff read everything that is written here… We don;t scare them when they read complaints about a neighbors yard ,or who is drunk or useing drugs… That only causes us harm, in their opinion we are a community in internal conflict and some like it that way.. They show up at meetings and stroke you. They bring a Police Sargent to talk about parking, and he dose'nt know S***. You want a light and you get a flashing yellow…. and you are told that is the best they can do BS…I see comments written about other ethnic groups or religious groups and all that THEY get… Well wake up just how do you think it happens… They form one united front to get what they need and want.. They keep the pressure on the Politicians as a group and force them to comply. Politicians are like Donkeys you have to lead them around ,until you get the desired result !!!! I don;t mean to sound old but the GB I grew up in If they wanted a light. Someone would have "borrowed" one and mounted it themselves…. PLEASE let us stop and think about how we can be taken seriously and make this a safer and better community…..

Thank you sorry for you all.
You and a number of others who commented in favor of my letter, I greatly appreciate it but more importantly it sends a message to all the naysayers who have nothing to do but complain and complain about this community we call home.
I've read a number of naysayers who want to blame the messenger, the messenger being GB.net, for many of the problems and arguing we have here and some actually called for the shutting down of this website. Well, I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the dirty wash water; it's not the dialogue that is doing us harm, it's the quality of that dialogue that's hurting us.

I agree with you totally as do many other reasonable people. There are many who do not like the posts here. I don't agree with all either. … But one thing I do know is ,that this site is one of the best ways to remain informed about SERIOUS issues confronting our community… And what we as a community can, through a free exchange of ideas ,can do to best solve issues we all care about…Child safety crossing streets, Care of those that can't take care of themselves… These should be our community prioritys…I am sorry that in my former post I left out the GB Vollies who are such an important part of our well being down here…This neighborhood is unique and I would like it to stay that way… Not by keeping people out, they mean nothing to me, but by understanding who we are and what we believe in is real… You will always have a disgruntled bunch, that is inevitable, stay positive and say what you believe that is my mantra….

This is a very timely topic in light of the recent stories in the news about how a number of city parks are padlocked and not available to the general public. The city tries to justify this by saying they have special agreements with "community " groups who pay with their own funds for the upkeep of these parks, and therefore have some control over their use. What the city fails to mention is that these very same groups receive millions of dollars from the city to operate, so in essence, the city is in fact ultimately paying for the park upkeep, albeit through a middleman. Why don't they just go back to properly funding the parks department directly so that the parks can be open to everyone as they should be. Gerritsen Beach residents would be wise to keep an eye on this matter before they find the local parks in the neighborhood infiltrated by these groups and perhaps restricted to a select few. Be vigilant and be aware.

You're right about being "vigilant and be aware". I also feel some parks should be padlocked. GB is in out-of-the-way community which has been taking care of these ball fields for as long as I can remember.
I wouldn't mind outsiders coming in to use the football and baseball fields if they left the park in the same condition they found it; we both know that's not going to happen.

Just let us gate the community and care for our own without an increase in taxes!! Everytime we try the good the city, state, and gov't step in and do something stupid. What is the sense of putting a Yellow flashing light at Gerritsen and Channel? All we asked for was a light mid way down the avenue, but they will spend more money on flashing yellow light by school and painting lines which Do not work!Serious: all they do is cause traffic

Traffic lights and painted lines do nothing on Gerritsen Ave. The self important morons just drive down the middle of the avenue at break necks speeds. And as for the traffic light in front of the school they just go out in the middle of the avenue, go around the people waiting for the light run the light and continue driving at break neck speeds. I have had to run for my life on more than one occasion because of people like this. We need a light at every corner with red light cameras and speeding cameras. And don't ticket the people they catch with the cameras, jail them. Once we get all the out of control morons put away, we won't need the lights and cameras any more. The problems are not the lack of lights or stop signs or how many lines are drawn on the street. The problem is the residents of the neighborhood who drive like they have a license to kill.
