This is true – people with small kids, small dogs and cats beware. They also come out during the day now. The dropppings and urine is all over your yard even if your don't realize; its a dangerous and unhealthy situation at the moment.

Who says? The laws that protect wildlife from jackasses, that's who. Rat poison around your property can also harm many unintended victims. If anyone knows anyone who is poisoning or killing any animal or bird, do not hesitate to call ASPCA law enforcement or the DEC. The ASPCA or the Humane Society will also be happy to do a necropsy on any animal suspected of poisoning and investigate and prosecute. This is ridiculous, there are MANY deterents available. Also all kinds of homemade sprays to keep them out of your yard. Why don't you spend some quality time on your computer and look some up.
Hot debate. What do you think?

I agree…poison is NOT the way to go…it's cruel for one thing. It could also get into the mouth of an unintended victim…like a domestic pet or god forbid a child. Another reason is the animal can die under someones deck or home..UGH! I could never hurt any animal and live with myself. As for sprays….they don't work. The only thing thats going to make a dent is to stop leaving food out.

I also think that it's an unusual year because it didn't rain virtually all July. I think that the raccoons are searching not so much for food as water. Can you imagine not finding water for a month? Someone early in this discussion mentioned them trying to drink from their pool. I think that's what they are looking for, why they have been more obvious and bold. We forget that all life needs clean water, and they can't just turn on a faucet like we can.

I one time saw 2 cars parked near the wooded side on Gerritsen and Lois and some Russian people (I know they're Russian because they were speaking it before everyone starts screaming), with these cages. They must have dumped a few in our neighborhood. I asked them and in broken English they told me they had, I was like "WTF are you brining them here for"? They looked at me like I had 4 heads, how dare I question them.

I have lived in Gerristen Beach for 27 years and I have never seen any Raccoons up until a couple months ago. It started with seeing one hanging out under my deck, but now I have seen at least 10 at a time. The neighbor behind me and the neighbor that lives across the street from me both leave food out for the stray cats but every night you will see the Raccoons eating all the cat food. So not only do I have to deal with cat crap all over my yard (the smell is unbearable by the way) but now I have to deal with the Raccoons hanging out on my deck and in my my yard in between their dam meals. This little sucker was so bold scratching on my door trying get into my house, my husband was pushing the door open a little to tap it and scare it away but it did not get scared and would not budge. I tried to video it but it was to dark. Shortly after that we heard a raccoon attacking a cat in the yard behind mine. I have a small dog and think its so unfair that I can't even let him outside on my property alone because I have to worry about him getting attacked by a raccoon or even getting sick from the cat crap and raccoon crap every where. Everyone is telling me to call an exterminator but I don't see why I should have to pay for one when I am not the one feeding them and bringing them here. They will just keep coming back because they know there is food. Something really needs to be done. Other people suggested getting traps but I will not risk getting attacked by a big mama raccoon for trapping her babies. There are way too many to trap anyway. 311 said they not can not do anything for us. I remember the days when you would occasionally see a possum waddling down the street at night but they never bothered anybody.

For the past few days I have been patiently waiting for one of my tomatoes in my small tomato patch to reach its point of ripe perfection. To my dismay, this morning I discovered my much anticipated tomato was viciously attacked and partially consumed by, I assume, a raccoon. I removed the partial specimen and carefully packaged it, planning to bring it to Dr. Steven Langsam's office for further analysis.

If you have a small child dog or cat be worried – they've been coming out during the day too. When your child comes running into the house holding her eye that's dangling out of the socket, or you walk out to find your beloved doggie is torn to shreds, maybe something will be done and you won't find these diseased animals so cute. In the meantime, here's an opportunity for the kids of the neighborhood to help out and get rid of these oversized rodets.

They were showing pictures of Raccoons found in peoples houses in parkslope. One person had a pic of a dead Raccoon that accidentally strangled itself in their silverware draw in their kitchen! Another person had pics of 5 Raccoons in their house rumbling their kitchen! Also a lady had pics of Raccoons trying to open their screen windows in broad day light. The news also made comments that they got reports that kids have gotten deathly sick from raccoon parasites and that the department of health has not received any complaints about racoons from any other neighborhoods… Do you think if enough people complain from our neighborhood to the department of health they will do something? The lady on the news said the same thing I did… why are the raccoons not afraid of us?

THAT IS BS – They will take the info down, connect you with several different departments and record it as a statistic. If you don't call 311 you don't have the right to complain because all you're doing is wishing it away.
I'm telling you – someone's kid is going to has his/her eyes torn out or someone's dog or cat is going to be torn to shreds real soon.

mayhaps a kid will have their eye torn out….
mayhaps your fear mongering.
You've mentioned children getting their eyes torn out twice now, and I have to say, it's a disturbing image, but seems unlikely. These creatures want the same things you do, they want to eat your food, and protect their homes and families.
While I understand the concern here, I think that there are other ways of dealing with this situation. The poster below who advocates conditioning the raccoons to stay away is posing a marvelous suggestion. To the many people who are whining about not wanting to pay $600 to trap the animals, why not start a collection in the neighborhood to pay for it?

First off, the raccoons and the cats that I've seen together don't fight. Cats are NOT stupid animals. They'll walk away from a raccoon and let it have the food before it will fight with it. Possums on the other hand will not walk away. Dogs will go after anything thats on their property because they are protective. As for someones kid getting their eyes torn out? By the time the raccoons venture out, most young children are either already in the house or in bed. And the "older" kids should know better…if their parents talked to them. So again, it comes down to responsible parents teaching their children whats right and wrong…and teaching their children to respect ALL LIFE

I don't know but its worth a shot. Everytime we have called 311 they told us that because they are wild life we have to trap them on our own and we can call animal control to pick them up. But seeing how bold these raccoons are now, I don't even think its possible to trap them. Plus they are really good with their hands, who is to say even if they get trapped, one of the other Raccoons can't just open the dam trap them selves and let the others out. After seeing the news last night I am even more worried now. They open doors and screens with their hands. They got into these peoples homes. That is insane. Now we are going to have to lock our doors and windows all the time. We can't even enjoy a nice breeze when we are home. This is Gerristen Beach, I have never felt trapped in my own home, why should I have to feel like this now. I was trying to see if they had a link for what I saw on the news last night but I can't find one.

I had a "family" of raccoons on my roof at one point, and every evening they would be sitting next to my kitchen window because they could smell the cat food I had in the bowls on my kitchen floor for my cats. I found the best way to chase them off was to shine a light on them. Being nocturnal they don't like bright lights. They stopped coming, because like any animal, even though there was food, I "trained" them that if they came to my window, they would get a bright light in their eyes. Hope this helps some of you.

Thanks Anon, that's so rational. People should do what is done in the country to discourage them (an reduce their numbers) cover your garbage cans tightly, and if you feed feral cats, (thank-you! and please have them all neutered) and please take any uneaten food away after 20 minutes. There are common sense controls for these problems without resorting to the outright killing of wildlife that is just trying to survive. They aren't monsters, they are just animals. I do understand that they are carriers of many parasites, but so do alot of other living things. Just use sensible precautions. There is no reason for the hysterics.

I would also like to thank the people that are feeding our stray cats and as you said you need to take precautions considering the infestation of raccoons we have in our community. As someone who owned cats or should I say owned me for 20 years and also fed feral cats for many years I would also like to suggest they include a litter box for the strays so your neighbors, like the ones I've been reading about on this thread, won't have to put up with animal poop in their yards. I also read here that a cage to catch raccoons would cost hundreds of dollars to be an exaggeration. I purchased a Have a Heart trap that can accommodate a 60 pound animal for less than $70. I caught many cats and kittens with that trap and brought them up state to a no kill shelter.

Trainman, Everything she says is such hyperbole! The trap is hundreds of dollars, kids are going to have their eyes torn out, dogs and cats ripped to shreds. Just crazy! I think part of the problem might be that other neighborhoods are using those same traps and moving them here. They dump them out back weeds and there is not much natural food for them there, so they come across the Ave. looking for food. Too bad that the Million Trees Program is not planting any trees that provide food for wildlife, but they are all strictly ornamental. I thank you for caring for feral cats. That's another animal that gets dumped out here alot and thank God there are people compassionate enough to care for them. Years ago alot of dogs were dumped also, but that seems to have slowed quite a bit. I have fed and neutered, adopted and found homes for dozens of cats over the years. The people who feed them have got to take that next step and have them fixed. The litter box is a great idea. I do sympathize with people who don't care for them in their yards, but have a heart, ya know?

The reason for my hysterics is that my garbage is covered tightly and I do not feed the dam cats my neighbors do, but I am the one suffering with cat and raccoon feces all over my property and gangs of cats hanging out on my property all day and raccoons hanging out on my property every night! Hello as you can see the raccoon was scratching on my screen door trying get in to my house, with my husband and I standing right there. When one eventually attacks my little dog, I will be wrong for killing it right? Its not fair that I now have to carry a flash light and check if its clear to walk in and out of my house. I am not exaggerating. The other night I walked into my side door and there was a raccoon starring at me right above my head on the gutters! What scares me is that they are no longer scared of people. Obviously some people are not having as bad experiences as others and that is why their opinions are not as strong as mine. When you start seeing over 10 raccoons in your yard at a time… Come talk to me…

TO: Thats my back door Chris! One raccoon is to many! I cannot stand them. They are disgusting. And yes they are not afraid of us. I also have a dog that I try not to let out after dark because I know she will attack them if she sees them and I am afraid of her getting sick or hurt. Its a shame that we have to buy a cage ($300-$600) and trap them. No way, I pay taxes let the city do their job and catch them. They do carry many diseases and I for one will not go near one. The people that feed them should stop. Its a danger to children and adults. They are not nice they are nasty. Please all you people that feed them stop!!!!!!

Lester court is like a dam animal kingdom! I just moved here myself and I can't even let my own dogs out in MY fenced in yard for fear they will become racoon food! A few people feed the strays on this block..one across the street puts out huge bowls or just throws it on the stoop. I was walking my dogs one night and I saw 6 racoons crossing the street and three of them were eating out of the bowl there. I was terrified. I had to pick up my dogs..one is only 7lbs and run past. I have walked down the block and sometimes the stench is enough to make you gag in certain places. If people want to have animals…i'm all for it. But take care of them!!! I don't want to see any animal suffer…but feeding strays is not the way to go. I have lived in the beach for many years and have never encountered anything like what goes on on this block….it's out of control.

You think Lester court is bad now. You should have seen it 2 years ago. I myself have fixed out of my own pocket cats over years. Last year I had an animal rescue come in and we caught 20 cats and took them to the city to fix them and release them, we had to
keep the femals for 5 days before we could release them. The effort
is there. At least this year we are not over run with kittens. As far as the lady across the street, she can't come down the stoop to pick up the remaining cat food because she is unable to walk. As far as the Raccoons they were introduced here by the Parks Department to control the rising duck population. And the Possums were to control the rat population. They couldn’t put rat poison around because of the dogs and kids. It was a lot worse on Lester Court before you moved in. Lucky You

You know what would work? People not feeding the stray cats! That would work! If there is no food for them to eat, they will stop coming…. As long as my neighbors keep leaving out a ton of cat food everyday, nothing I do will work to keep the raccoons away. I would never hurt or poison them but I really wish they would go back from where they came from.

I agree with both of you to some degree. The answer is not to punish these poor unfortunate animals who exist because of people's uncaring or uninformed actions.
People who feed the stray animals should understand the implications of their actions. If they don't capture these animals and have them sterilize and just leave food out there for them to feed, the stray animals would just multiply creating an even worse problem and attracting pesky wild animals like we're experiencing now. So please, if you want to feed stray animals just leave enough food for them to eat when they come and then remove what's left over. Also provide a litter box so your kind actions don't disturb your neighbors and please, please have them sterilize.

lol Jim,
but this is not "A" raccoon. It's LOTS of raccoons…AND possums….AND cats. I love animals..I have a rescue dog myself. Call me selfish but here's the deal….I don't like walking out my front door and stepping in cat crap…OR..having one of my kids track it in the front door because they stepped in it..it's gross. When I walk my dogs I bring a bag…if I left it in front of neighbors homes …they would be pissed..and rightfully so! As for the Raccoons….of course we are going to see them around…but because of the people feeding the strays on this block there are many of them here. As I said before…I lived in the beach for Years…and have seen the occasional possum and raccoon…but let me tell you…this block is FULL OF CRITTERS!! We'd have to hire that trapper full time!

If you knew anything about cats, you would know that they don't crap in front of anyones door. They go in dirt or leaves and bury it. If you are seeing small cat sized craps in front of your door, they are from the raccoons or possums. Why not get together with the neighbors who are feeding the strays and and have then get in touch with one of the many rescue/TNR groups and get them all fixed. (like Neighborhood Cats or The Humane Society) Speak to them about not leaving the food out after the cats have eaten. The problem will take care of itself in time and no animal needs to be hurt in the process.

While I don't claim to know much about cats I believe it is cat crap….it WAS covered by leaves which is how I stepped in it !! I also saw a couple just sitting on the mat I kept in front of the door until I got rid of it…it's also in my front yard which I really don't use. I stepped in that when I went to paint the front window! Aside from that..I am also no expert in the "smells" of cat crap versus raccoon or possum poop ( and I thank god eveyday for that) but when you walk down this block in the heat…it smells like cat! Aside from all this Poop talk…my son was woken from hissleep at 6:45 this morning by a trilling and scratching at his window….and Guess what? It was a RACCOON! The neighbors dog started barking and they ran up on the wires between our houses…I just got pictures of them. I took the pics at 7AM…shouldn't they be sleeping? ARGH!! Also..as for no animals being hurt….i'm all for that. But I can't let my very small dogs in my own yard because of this. BTW it's 7:11 and they are still hanging out on the pole.

I know a lot about cats since I see them first hand crapping in my yard (and no they don’t necessarily could it up with leaves and dirt). They are doing it because the savages next door have no consideration when they leave the food out, no litter box, no sterilization and don’t want to listen or talk about the matter. You want 'dialogue' and my neighbor is building a mound of nuclear cat poop.

Who cares which type of crap it is, its still nasty and smells and is loaded with parasites. I walk around with bags on my little dogs leash and make sure I pick up all his tiny poops when I walk him around the neighborhood. He is my dog, my responsibility. You wanna feed the strays? Get them all neutered, put a litter box in your yard and take the food away before it gets dark and the dam raccoons come! I mean I got cat crap all over the sides of my house where the dirt is, more crap on the deck oh and cat throw up (hairballs with throw up) on my deck too. Its disgusting. As far as raccoons go, they are called "wild life" for a reason. They do not belong here.

No, ignorant is not seeing that even if money is donated to the ASPCA, there's so many cats in Gerristen. Ever try taking a stray cat to the ASPCA? They basically tell you "We probably won't find a good home and it'll be put down." I have about three baby kittens living in my backyard right now, but I always take the food and milk in at night. Don't be so quick to judge people. Maybe the half-eaten bagels or bags of chips or untied trash bags are to blame? People are so quick to blame animals because they don't have a voice. Let's get real.

The AC&C has a catch and release program. If the cats can be trapped "humanely", they will pick them up, spay/neuter them and return them to the area. It won't get rid of them, but it help with the population explosion of them, and you'll know they're healthy.

We are still deystroying many other animal homes, many forest are becoming less an less, lots of animals die because of these ignorant people. Yet you dont see them trying to kill us, they have every right to! i think they r finally taking back what was originally theres!

Uh..I don't think so. Racoons were not present at my mortgage signing..as a matter of fact they didn't even show thier masked faces for over a decade after I bought my house! I have lived here for nearly 50yrs..I was here before them. They showed up just in the past few years along with the opposums. These pests were introduced by the city, they are not native to GB. There has always been wildlife around here, but it ha not included coons & possums.

You are absolutely right anonymous! Just because we do not want gangs of raccoons and possums hanging out and pooping all over our property does not make us bad people. We are not against animals and nature but we live in brooklyn not the country. I love my dog like he is my child! Im not against animals. I think people are missing the message here. We are worried about the recent over population of the raccoons and diseases they carry. Are we wrong for being worried? Its all over the news.
