The New York Police Department’s 61 Precinct is offering free etching of cars, cell phones, iPods, cameras and any other portable electronic that can be vulnerable to theft.
The police etch an invisible ID number on the electronic device for identification purposes. In the event the device is stolen, then recovered, it will be returned to its rightful owner through the etching. The service is free of charge and only takes a few minutes. The police urge students and adults to take advantage of the program.

i took my bike for etching and all they do is to write a number on the frame. hardly noticeable on my silver color frame.
VIN etching is good except they don't do it on all windows. only up to 4.

They've been doing this for years, I strongly suggest you call in advance before going to make sure someone is there to do it
