A 50 + year battle to get a traffic signal at Channel Avenue has come to an end – thanks to the Gerrittsen Beach Property Owners and State Senator Marty Golden.
State Senator Martin J. Golden is today announcing that he has received notification from the Department of Transportation that a flashing yellow light has been approved for installation at the intersection of Gerritsen and Channel Avenue.
A flashing yellow traffic light indicates that there is a congested road or dangerous intersection ahead. The signal means motorists should slow down and approach with caution.
The corner has long been one of much concern for the entire Gerritsen Beach community as well as the school community of P.S. 277. Senator Golden has met with DOT officials and the Gerrittsen Beach Property Owners Association on site at this location to observe the traffic study, and has repeatedly contacted the Transportation Department and requested traffic calming measures be considered for this intersection.
A date for installation has not been scheduled.
Senator Marty Golden stated, “This is a great day for the community of Gerritsen Beach and for the safety of all residents. This is a day that has long been wished for by parents, teachers, and students of P.S. 277, as
well as the residents of the neighboring streets throughout the community. Finally, after continued efforts and support from the community, including the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners Association, we have been able to get approval for traffic safety enhancements at this intersection. With the new school year set to begin next month, this news could not have arrived at a better time.”
Golden concluded, “I am hopeful that the installation of this traffic signal will be completed soon. The community of Gerritsen Beach has waited long enough to feel safer and more comfortable when driving along Gerritsen Avenue at Channel Avenue. We thank the Department of Transportation for approving this signal
and for their continued attention to this intersection.”

Now we need something at florence ave it has been impossible to get out of that street since the new traffic pattern……

No question about it, Florence Ave. has very limited vision when leaving it; and so does Seba Ave. and others….
There are some who continually raise the subject of "traffic lights" along the avenue. Often adding, "they could be synchronized". That's all we need: racing to beat the lights before they turn red!
Currently, DOT is studying every aspect of our traffic flow problem. That means, it won't happen over night. In the meantime, instead of harassment ticketing, why not catch some of the speeders.
For those who berate the content of this website, consider that the flashing lights on Channel Avenue is being reported here first. Our thanks to Senator Marty Golden for his persistence on behalf of our community.

so now we are going to have a flashing light along with a one lane ave? this is getting redic if you want to do something about the traffic on the ave make the light further down not a block away from the only traffi light we have

Agreed. One block away instead of at the Library or in front of Seba Ave Park. Lack of common sense is what it is.

Do you really think a flashing light is going to deter the kids that fly up and down the Ave? They don't wait for the only light we have to turn green, they use it as if it were a stop sign.

It will slow me down a bit more, overall it can't hurt – only help. It’s not a total waste of money but it definitely could have been better spent at Florence or Seba Aves.

Thanks Marty, I'm just not sure what a flashing yellow light on Gerritsen Ave will do but its a start and maybe before the kids in the school become grandparents a regular traffic light will be there

Do you guys know what a Yellow Flashing Light means for most drivers? Nothing. They Ignore it.
Nobody is going to slow down. So, you better hope there's a cop that's gonna be giving out speeding tickets.
You guys need a Flashing Red, not Flashing Yellow.

You need traffic calming, not traffic control devices such as lights and signs.

No one obeys the stop signs coming out of Cyrus, Seba and Lois, why does anyone think people will slow down for a yellow? This should have been put on the corner of Cyrus, not, like someone said above, one block from the only light on the avenue.

What a shame that the best thing for Gerritsen Avenue's speeders is to take away their cars. Nothing will stop those people but its up to the rest of us to care and slow it down. This light will be a reminder that our prescious children may be crossing.

You and right! No one stops at the STOP signs why would a flashing Yellow light mean anything?

I have, like many people, been guilty of occasionally flouting the traffic laws on and around Gerritsen Avenue. While I don't believe this device will have much of an impact on the aggressive drivers (whose issue isn't driving, but a pure sense of disregard for anything other than self) it will at the very least raise awareness of the hazard at the intersection.
Now if there was only a way to get people to care about others; an issue I am afraid will not be remedied with a traffic light.

hahahahaha….a flashing yellow??? really??? i think a crossing guard will do much better at slowing down traffic during school hours than a flashing yellow…will the traffic guard on channel now be laid off???…at least she can stop the cars to allow crossing pedistrians, what will a flashing yellow really do other than provide a fantastic move politically for mg?
…(((eyeroll)))…
Hot debate. What do you think?

gbchickie, crossing guards only work 2 hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon, what about the other 20 hours?

i was under the impression the light was to slow down traffic for the school and bc its a busy corner due to the school…at the time i posted i was just wondering if the light was meant to take the crossing guards place…i realize now regardless of a traffic light there are always crossing guards assisting the children during school hours
i still think the yellow is a dopey solution, but a definite appeaser to all

If nothing else maybe the crossing guard will be slightly safer along with the children. I have always thought they deserved hazard pay for working that intersection.

I've been at the light in front of the school while it was red – cars have actually gone around me and through it. It was on the weekend but still – if a red light doesn't stop them, a flashing yellow certainly won't help.

I think they should put speed bumps on the entire length of Gerritsen Avenue. Every 20 feet. Let's see the little bastards race up and down the avenue then.

cant put speed bumps on the ave. the fire department has to get down the ave fast so does the ambulances and besides it takes the 61 prec. long enough to ans. our calls with speed bumps there forget about it

why didn't Senator Golden listen about the traffic lights when he wasn't listening to the community about Green Streets.

The flashing yellow light is being located at the most used pedestrian crossing to P.S. 277. It is an alert to drivers approaching during school hours, and will help the crossing guard.
This has been one of the locations for a traffic light that has been sought for years. It's a foot in the door.

the steayd flow of traffic during the peak hours makes this avene impossible now! and how about the bottleneck created at Gerritsen and Knapp…it is a domino effetc fromthe single lane at gerritsen and u….flowing back to the light at Knapp and Gerritsen and backingup Gerritsen Ave and Knapp Street during the peak hours…who dreams up these traffic patterns????? and when do they study traffic..at 2 AM???

Danny,
Why did you use a picture of an Israeli traffic light? Couldn't you take a picture of an American one?

there are already crossing guards there for the school…that seems to be the priority here…so putting a flashing yellow is redundant and quite frankly a slap in the face to the community…. Put the taxpayers money to good use and place "real" traffic lights every few blocks so the members of this community can safely cross the Avenue…from the young to the elderly.
