I by St. James. In the past few weeks, we have seen some raccoons in our backyard. They have been trying to drink from our pool and have been eating our plants. Yesterday evening (7/22/10) we witnessed six raccoons in total on our deck. I snapped some pictures (sorry for the grainy quality, it was on my cell phone). I know some others on the block have been having this problem. They don’t appear rabid, but neighbors and residents should just be aware of this when they have their children playing out in their yards. Thanks.

I SAW A RACCOON ON GARLAND AVENUE YESTERDAY. IT CLIMBED INTO MY FRIENDS TREE!!!

Raccoons SHOULD NEVER be out in the day. It is a sign that they are sick or disoriented, very frequently with rabies. Even if they seem fine, don’t touch!!!!

The idiots in the neighborhood who leave food out for the feral cats (another big issue) are responsible for helping increase the problem. I’ve got a clan of raccoons over on Canton that walk through and often crap by my yard to get to a neighboring dump of a house with a beat up garage.

Well I have bigger idiots in my Huntington neighborhood. Never mind the feral cats the nut nextdoor feeds. She is setting out dishes of food all night long to specifically feed the racoons. In doing this she is creating a huge problem for me. The racoons create a 1-2 hour clean up jpb every morning for my housekeeper. They take the plants and dirt out of all my flowerpots on my top deck, which of course winds up all over my bottom sidewalk. They sh– all over my deck and cement sidewalk and the pee in my mini piggies water bucket. Then I put out critter ritter. Great stuff it really works… It stopped them for about 2 weeks. Then my neighbor suddenly complained and said his poor dear wife has asthma and demands that I not use the stuff. Problem is back again!!! Oh! by the way I called the cops last week because one of the little dears was wobbling and falling down all over my backyard during the broad day light hours. The cop shot it. It was rabid. I told this idiot next door to no avail.
Help!! Help!! I am losing my mind and I am about to lose my housekeeper who has been with me for 8 years. At wits end….

The raccoons moved here from the salt marsh area and White Island because of the “clean-up” going on there. The feds should be responsible for moving them back. The question is, do the feds even know that this problem has arisen?

I have a abandoned house and empty lot next door where a family of raccoons and possums live. I have photos of them in my yard during the day . I have made tons of calls to 311 they tell me I have to catch them myself with a cage they will rent me, well I did that and when I called 311 they transfered me to 911 the police came to my house at 7:30 am to tell me there was nothin they could do they would put in a call to animal control, In the mean time the mother and father and 5 babies were in my yard trying to get their brother out of the cage ( I have video). At 1:00pm I called 311 again they said they that they never received a call from 911 and would send someone right away but by the time they got here the mother opened the cage and took her baby. The person from animal control could not believe that 311 has not done anything about the condition of the abandoned house and lot next door to me and told me to call our councilman to complain which I did and I’m still waiting to hear back from them.

This is exactly what happened to myself and my neighbors a couple of years ago. I called ACC and they said we had to trap them ourselves. I bought a trap at Home Depot and did eventually get one. When the ACC came they said they killed them to test for rabies. The racoon was a pest but I really didn’t think they would kill it – I just thought they would release it somewhere desolate like the creek or GB or something.

Of course the mother was frantic to open the cage and release her baby, wouldn’t you? Do you think they have less parental instinct? How cruel of you to do that! These are thinking, sentinent animals. Why not enjoy the wildlife and learn to coexist with it, and limit population growth by common sense measures, such as making sure garbage cans have tight lids and not leaving food outside?

Raccoons are dirty dangerous animals I have 2 children and 2 dogs that I have to worry about everytime they go in the yard or walk out of the gate. I was not trying to hurt the raccoon in any way they do not belong here. Do you know that their feces can kill or paralyze a child, or how about they can rip you apart with their claws. Oh and by the way I do not leave food or garbage around for them to eat. You may think it’s cruel maybe you don’t have kids to worry about but the most important thing to me is the safety of my family.

I think that we are seeing more of them this year because they often sleep in trees during the day and we lost so many of the neighborhoods big trees this past winter and spring. They are looking for places to hide and sleep during the day and what looks good to them in the early morning may not turn out to be so good when people wake up and come out to play. I feel bad for them and all wildlife trying to make it in the city. Especially with this draught, when is it going to rain? Everything is so brown, even the weeds are dead. This will be the citys excuse for the next water bill increase too. Maybe the all powerful King Bloomberg is making it not rain just so he can raise the rate!

They will hiss at you if they are cornered, just leave them alone and they will go away in the night and will not look to have a confrontation with you. They aren’t ‘nasty animals’, they are just animals. Just trying to live. You poop alot more than they do and I’m sure that yours is doing alot more damage to their habitat than they are doing to yours. Sometimes I can’t believe the arrogance of the human race, that destroys so much and gives back so little. “they belong in the country’? wow, I’m sure that is where they would rather be and if not for all the human encroachment into THEIR habitat, that’s where they would have stayed.

And all those millions of dirty diapers that just go into the trash and are magically taken away by Sanitation, doesn’t affect anything, right?

How can you even compare Raccoons to humans? Are you serious? Ummm lets see when you do clean up their poop from your yard do you throw it in the trash or flush it in the bowl??? Same thing right?? Either way you obviously do not have the Raccoon infestation as bad as the other people complaining on this site do. We are talking 7, 8, 9 Racoon’s at a time hanging out pooping in our yards after eating all the cat food from all the neighbors who think its cute to leave a big old bowl of cat food outside their houses ever day and every night. We don’t bother them and they still hiss! I even saw one attack one of their own baby Raccoons the other night. They are not even scared when they see us, they just stand in our my yard looking at us like we don’t belong there. We can not even leave little dog outside alone. It is not right. Maybe seeing one Raccoon was cute in the beginning but this is getting ridicolous

OTOH, raccoons are pretty nasty animals. They can kill cats and even dogs. That’s a fact of nature. They should be trapped and brought over to the other side of Gerritsen Creek and released. Maybe they’ll stay there.

Ray, there is another answer and that is the urban sprawl into the country. We need to learn to coexist with and control the populations of them by common sense measures. I think calling it a plague is a bit extreme, I mean it’s wildlife for God sake. People take long trips and oooo and ahhh over the wonders of nature while on vacation. Why not enjoy this aspect of our parkland and neighborhood? The possums don’t hurt anyone and eat a HUGE amount of insects. I know they have taken care of the slug and snail problem that we always had. The raccoons DO eat rodents, although they are not fantastic hunters because of the way they are built, but surely they are taking out many of them. Live and let live!

They may appear cute to some people, but they are nasty little critters with sharp teeth and a nasty disposition.
Raccoons are generally nocturnal animals, so seeing them during the day is usually rare. I would be concerned seeing them during the day. They may be rabid, which is not unlikely. Do not feed them if you don’t want them near your home. Much like feral cats, you won’t get rid of them too easily.

Lol, What are you baseing that on? “Nasty little critters with sharp teeth and a nasty dispositon”, They will hiss and defend their young, that doesn’t make them nasty, that makes them mammels. They have sharp teeth because that is what nature gave them to hunt and feed themselves. They aren’t “generally” nocturnal animals, they ARE nocturnal animals. I would assume that the photos of them taken in the day is because at dawn they sought refuge in a place that seemed safe and then were surprised and disturbed by people. If they are rabid, they would be walking around in circles an appear disoriented. The only thing you say that makes any sense is not to feed them, make sure your garbage cans are covered, if you are kind enough to feed feral cats, take up the leftovers and don’t leave anything there for them.

They are nasty animals. Yes, they are cute to look at, but don’t be fooled into thinking that they can become pets. They are wild animals, who belong in the wild. Don’t feed them.
If you let your cats or dogs out at night to be “free” & roam, they may not come back. They may become some raccoons next meal.
Did you ever hear a pet rabbit SCREAM in pain? Well, I did. It was the most horrirfying sound you could ever hear. (With the exception of a child screaming in pain.)
About 6 yrs. ago a raccoon attacked my cousin’s pet rabbit in her yard. I was there. I heard the poor bunny scream in pain & saw her trying to get away from the raccoon. The raccoon attacked her in her yard WITH a light on. The raccoon ripped & tore her throat & destroyed her nasal passage & eye. We were able to get the bunny away from the raccoon. We wrapped her in a towel which quickly became soaked in blood. We had to rush her to an animal ER. Blood was everywhere. The Dr. was able to sew her back together & prescribe meds, but she was never the same. It was pathetic. (She was an outside bunny who had a hutch, but most of the time she preferred to burrow outside in theyard.) She was a very friendly & sweet rabbit.
She only lived a short time after that attack.
Picture it if it was your baby asleep in their carriage in your yard, or your child playing your yard…….

That’s terrible about the bunny, but weren’t you and your cousin aware that there were raccoons in the neighborhood before this happened? That poor innocent animal should have been better protected by the “owners”. A dog could have gotten in and done the same thing. I would never leave a baby sleeping unattended in the yard for the same reason. There are common sense precautions that have to be taken, that are taken by people who live in Westchester or any community that has wildlife. I’m also suprised that you speak of the scream of the rabbit. They have no vocal cords to scream with, which is why millions of them are tortured every year to death by testing labs. They are all nice bunnies too. They have to tape the mouths shut on the dogs and other animals they use for experiments, so they don’t have to hear their cries.
Hot debate. What do you think?

I can’t recall if my cousin & I were aware of raccoons in GB at that time. However, I am sure that if she was aware of it, the bunny wouldn’t have been outside. She did have a well protected & locked hutch which was elevated. The raccoon managed to get to the bunny anyway. I also know that rabbits can’t vocalize. That was my point. They don’t bark, purr, meow or vocalize but she DID make a horrifying sound as she was being torn apart by the raccoon. It was a sound that I hope to never hear again. So please don’t accuse me of not knowing what I am talking about or that I am lying.
As far as leaving a baby outside, I wouldn’t do it NOW. But there were days years ago, that you COULD leave your baby asleep in their carriage on your back deck or front patio. You didn’t have to be afraid of animals or people hurting your sleeping baby in your own yard. I am not talking about leaving them all day, without checking on them. I am talking about leaving them out for a nap.
Why is every comment on this site picked apart?
We are a family of animal lovers from way back. We have rescued many animals & we are terrific “parents” (not owners) to our animals.
Why do you assume (you do know what it means if you assume?) that she didn’t take the proper precautions for the bunny? Why is it necessary to give a snotty comment? I was only trying to point out that raccoons are not domesticated animals. Don’t be fooled by their cute faces to think that they can be approached. Don’t leave food or water out for them. That is all I was pointing out.
Stop being so high & mighty & think that you know it all…..

Proud American, you are a true knuckle draggin’ Neanderthal. And FYI, most garments labeled ‘racoon fur’, if it comes from China or Korea is actually from a dog, a ‘racoon dog’ with very similar marked and textured fur. But it’s ok, because they use the meat too. They say that the meat is more tender if the adrenaline is pumping before they slaughter the dogs, so they terrorize it a bit beforehand. Cut off a paw, or the tail, or just beat it awhile. Most of them are skinned while still alive, but I’m sure you think that’s ok too. It’s only an animal. In Korea, the government encourages the eating of dogs especially in summer, telling people it will help keep them cool. Why pass up free food in your backyard?

Infectious Diseases of Raccoons
Raccoons in the United States are known to carry infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans and animals that have contact with raccoons or their waste. Both young and mature raccoons can shed viruses, bacteria and parasites that when exposed to humans and animals can result in infections and disease. People should not handle raccoons or their waste without protection and appropriate training.
Raccoons expose humans to disease when handled or if there is exposure to bodily secretions or feces. Saliva, urine, feces and bites or scratches are the most common routes of exposure. Contamination of the environment and any materials used by the raccoons can also be a source. People who handle raccoons, who are bitten, scratched or exposed to their waste, should be aware of the potential health hazards.
Any person who has handled a raccoon of any age should consult a physician immediately. Individuals who have participated in the handling, care, feeding and cleaning of any raccoons should be evaluated for exposure to the following diseases and be informed of all the potential human health risks caused by wildlife and raccoons.
• Rabies: Rabies is a virus that is spread by contact with the saliva of a rabid animal or by being scratched or bitten by a rabid animal. Raccoons are one of the most common species to carry rabies.
• Baylisascaris procyonis: (Bay-lis-asc-aris) The Raccoon Ascarid or roundworm is a parasite of the intestines of raccoons that sheds large numbers of eggs in the feces. Feces contaminated with eggs can become infective to humans after 2-4 weeks of incubation. Exposure to feces during handling, feeding and cleaning can cause a serious disease known as Visceral Larval Migrans and infection of the central nervous system. Oral ingestion of infective stages of eggs is the primary route of exposure.
• Giardiasis: Giardia species is a microscopic protazoal infection that can be transmitted by a wide variety of animals. Raccoons can carry this organism in their feces and contaminate water, soil and surfaces. Humans can contract Giardia by ingestion of infective cysts from contaminated animals and sources. Patients can develop severe gastrointestinal symptoms.
• Leptospirosis: Leptospira species is a bacterial infection that many animals and humans can contract and transmit. There are several different species of Leptospira that are found in wildlife, which is the primary source of contamination of the environment with these bacteria. Raccoons can shed Leptospirosis in their urine and secretions. Exposure of these excretions to open wounds or orally can cause infection to humans.
• Other Diseases: Other bacterial diseases (such as Salmonella or E. Coli), fungus and rare parasites can also be a risk for illness in humans. People who handle, feed and clean up waste should be aware of the potential health hazards and practice aggressive hygiene and sanitation to prevent exposure of skin, eyes, mouth and body to infection. Physicians can assess individuals who may have been exposed and recommend appropriate actions to prevent disease.
For more information on raccoons and their diseases please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at http://www.cdc.gov and search under Raccoon Zoonosis or the specific disease name. Please call the Office of the Rhode Island State Public Health Veterinarian at the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, 401-222-2781, for other information.

Do you think all the so called improvements being done on the Avenue along the fields has anything to do with the racoons relocating to peoples yards? Absolutely yes.
Did anyone think out before doing these improvements and eliminating parts of the parkland (the trees, weeds, etc,) where the wild life would relocate themselves too. I say not.
The wildlife, animals have been on the Avenue for years my guess is some have been chased away from THEIR natural habitat to our backyards

Yeah, the most disruptive part. I’ve dealt with opossums, raccoons, deer, foxes, and coyotes, to name a few. Unless it’s a rabid animal (including “household” pets) or a bear, they’re a nuisance at most. Geese and swans are more likely to come after you rather than a mammal, unless it has rabies or you’re too close to its young.

PETA pansy? I don’t think so. I’m not a vegan and think PETA is way out there sometimes, but what is wrong with questioning the attitudes toward and the treatment of animals in this world? There are so many people who will say, ‘I love animals’, but never really give a thought to what happens to millions of them every day. For example, 40 million cats and dogs were euthanized last year alone. 40 MILLION! Look into your own dogs eyes and think about that….and yet people still keep the puppy industry going by buying dogs from stores and so called breeders. Thanks to the internet more and more people are seeing the realities of factory farms, puppy mills, slaughterhouses, hatcheries, etc. If your all so worried about the potential disease from a raccoon passing thru your yard, do a bit of research into what you are eating. That will REALLY shock you! And just like with so many other problems that we have both locally and nationally, these industries are driven by money, greed and bribery. Speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves! “The Greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated” Gandhi

You’re responsible for trapping them. You can rent a trap from Animal Care and Control or you can buy one from Home Depot. Once you catch a raccoon call the ACC and see if they will pick it up. If it’s your cage you’ll have to make a trip to lovely Linden Blvd to retrieve it. The second thing you can do is trap it and release it somewhere else.

I mis-read your post. That’s a good question. I have no idea why someone residing in a major urban area would be responsible for trapping wildlife.

I read and I am going to try this: anywhere you want the raccoon to stay away from.
Mix one small bottle of hot sauce (like Tabasco) or one can of cayenne pepper with one gallon of water that has had one teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent added to it. The soap will help the pepper water adhere to the plants and other places you spray. The pepper spray will need to be reapplied after a rain or watering. You can also try just sprinkling cayenne pepper around your yard, I know costco sells a large can of it and the price is reasonable

Well yesterday Friday the 3 darlings were on the roof of the vollies hall @ 10:30 in the morning and slid down the gutter pipe into the yard. Why are they out during the day? They are definitely babies but really come on now
10:30 in the bright day sunlight? Whats up with that?

In addition to raccons we have a problem with OPOSSUMS…
Oposum Diseases…
Opossums are carriers of many diseases: tuberculosis, relapsing fever, herpes virus, tularemia, salmonella, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, trichomoniasis, Chagas Disease, yellow fever, and rabies (rarely). They are important reservoirs for leptospirosis (hemorrhagic jaundice) in wildlife and humans. Leptospirosis is transmitted through the urine and feces of infected animals. Humans frequently pick up the disease by eating unwashed produce or windfall fruit, or by putting unwashed hands to their mouth (gum, cigarettes, etc.). Opossums are also heavily infested with fleas, ticks, mites and lice which are known carriers and transmitters of
Opossums may be trapped with a 10x12x32 inch cage trap or they may be shot in rural areas. In urban areas, live trapping with baited cage traps is the best method of control. Since opossums and skunks occupy the same habitat types, open grid cage traps should be covered (top, bottom and sides) with heavy cardboard or 1/4 inch plywood. Almost any type of food can be used as bait to trap opossums. Using fruit, berries, raw egg, or peanut butter rather than meat will reduce the chance of catching neighborhood cats. Place trap in areas of greatest activity or near entry holes.

Round up the cats too! I am tired of my neighbor’s cats pooping in my yard. I don’t think anyone would be happy if my dog went in thier yard & left behind a nice mess. Keep your cats on your own property please.

People who feed feral cats are inconsiderate dirtbags, not giving a damn that those cats will crap in the nearby yards soon after.

I agree! If all these retards would stop feeding the a million stray cats in this neighborhood we would not have this problem! You want to feed these animals? Let them live in your house! As if its not enough to look at and smell the cat crap all over my yard and deck, now I have to get raided by a family of Raccoons everynight too! I think its bullcrap that we work so hard and spend so much money on a house and can’t enjoy being outside because of all these Raccoons everynight! I can’t even leave my lil dog out on my deck or in my yard because he may get attacked by a Raccoon or get sick from maybe eating the dirty infested cat crap all the over the dam place. Its really not right. Raccoons are are wildlife animals! They do not belong here! We don’t live in the dam country! The person who lives behind me feeds the cats and the person who lives across from me feeds the cats. I am stuck right in the middle and can’t do nothing about it.

Anyone see the report last night at 11 on channel 4 news? Seems the raccoons are taking over Park Slope (of course THEY made the news). They are trying to get in through windows, screens and doors. One person even claimed they tried to open a closed window!!!!
