I was at the beach on the 4th of July shooting photos of the water jets (Just testing a new 5D I have) to see the water splashes and fun people were having. I came across a couple of people who asked me to take shots of them to send to their emails. Now I have a long lens, 300mm, and I was taking a shot of a jet ski down beach when I heard this loud sound of a quad getting close to me… I lowered my camera in just enough time to see this idiot coming at me, then swerving within an inch of my feet and kicking sand up my leg. The “gentlemen” yelled to me not to take photos of him! Then sped off….
I then see him pull up to the guardrail at the end of the avenue, get off his quad and proceed to suck down a rather large beer. Now, I’m all for fun as well as anyone, but this guy is speeding down a rather crowded beach, drinking while driving (quad or car, same difference) and basically assaulting someone (me) with a lethal weapon (a rather large quad) and when I walked over and explained that I wasn’t taking photos of him, he actually tried to intimidate me and said he saw the camera pointed at him….
Well, I wasn’t taking a photo of him but I sure did after this encounter. I just want to show him how stupid and dangerous what he did was. I also hope this gets printed so he will think about his actions in the future. If I would have stepped an inch to my left he would have run me down… and for what? Taking a picture! I think that would be a little extreme. I shoot street photos in Manhattan all the time. At times people do not want to be photographed, so I respect that. I lower the camera if they ask, or I delete the shot if they ask after I shoot! It’s not a big deal!
I just cannot believe this guy tries to run me down, and then wants to intimidate me afterwards. Not that I am anyone special, but if you are going to do something like that, don’t do it to someone with a device that can capture your stupidity! Like I said to him as I walked away… “Your not too bright dude…”

Its too bad we cant find a place in the backweeds for quads to ride where they wont disturb everyone else. I f we had that at least this, the idiot who chased you would have no recourse to say "where else can I ride?" Im sure it is an insurance issue, as soon as one of them falls off and kills themselves the family will being suing the city. Maybe the quad riders could get together and help build a track and buy insurance? I doubt it, it seems like terrorizing the neighborhood is part of the "fun".

If little man (which is actually a good name) has that going on then little man should know better than to act a fool otherwise and expose himself. My wife and I occasionally like to take pictures of the general area. I think this neighborhood (our neighborhood) is beautiful. I don't need to be approached by some young thug thinking I care about taking pictures of him. If anyone puts me or my wife in danger by approaching me the way this idiot did then they're going to have a big problem. There's no reason this person couldn't politely ask not to be photographed. Too freakin' bad he's now ID'd as something else – he brought any further scrutiny on himself.

You seem to be upset that he was labeled as a drinker because George said he saw him drink a beer. What about the fact that he missed George by inches or the fact that he harassed him after the fact. I totally agree with on the ethnicity issue. I'm not sure I would commend someone (even myself) for "sad efforts" though, and if I were to create a story to bring entertainment to sad people, I would create a happy story for sad people. As far as me being a sad person… you obviously do not know ME! The fact that Shawn does not drink may be true, but when he got off the quad he grabbed a large brown bottle and drank it down… I assumed it was a beer (possibly a bad assumption I admit) but it sure looked like one to me. As far as deleting your comments… I have no control over that! I wouldn't if I could because I agree with you 100% about 2 sides of a story, AND about disrespecting a person's mother…. This tends to be the problem a lot of parents here are so quick to say "Not my kid". If it is not yours then whose is it? The parents need to first take responsibility for their own who are ruining this neighborhood. When I did wrong I was disciplined not protected. Discipline your own children if you dont want anyone else to do so. Even if he was not drinking he was still riding an illegal Quad on the beach where there were people. I am all for riding but try to be discreet, we always were. No fields, no beach or dont ride. Please this is ridiculous

Eddie is right, this is one of the young people who came–by invitation–to the GBPOA meeting over a year ago. One group presented their argument for the use of 'quads' and another for 'paint-ball use'.
At the time, I believe Shawn had paid a registration fee, but the use of quads in Metropolitan, NY was and is illegal. The State continues to collect fees, but the users must transport their quads to privately owned locations upstate or out of state.
At the time, we researched many sources for information, and anyone may do the same by putting "ATV or quads" in Google. It's all there, and the path always leads back to "illegal".
At that time, Councilman Lew Fidler offered to look into the possibility of finding a place at the Floyd Bennett complex, but that was turned down, and he reiterated that at the July 7th meeting.
The same is true for the use of "paint-ball" equipment.
Fortunately, in this instance, no one was physically hurt (or killed) but it did cause emotional distress to which those who attended the meeting are aware. Although that distress was expressed as the result of some of the thoughtless comments on this blog, it began off the blog.
Then again, if the State collects money every time one registers an ATV, why have they not made some provision to use that money for the benefit of locations for their use? Instead they collect money and put it in a "general fund"?
Yes, there are several of "our own" who are breaking the law, but each weekend brings in many more ATV's and dirt bikes from elsewhere by trailer.
Call 911 when you see this, it's a crime in action.

I can't understand why quads aren't outlawed, or banned from urban areas.
I guess the police are unable to regulate the illegal use of these vehicles on city streets…or look the other way.

paintball is not illegal. On more then one occasion a representative from the 61 has attended GBPOA meeting and informed people of that fact. There are rules that govern the sport just like there are rules in all games. I have had people stop in my store all the time with question about it. If you like stop on in and I'll tell you anything you would like to know about it . I don't need your name, like I said people ask me about it all the time. Joe

I'm a teenager in the Beach, and anyone who says that these quads are kept under control obviously haven't been in a life-threatening situation thanks to the vehicles. I've been walking my dog many times, and have a quad zoom down the Avenue, not observing laws nor caring for others. I rather not be killed while I'm obeying ALL pedestrian regulations. It's quite silly to blame all teenagers and young adults, as many tend to do for every negative occurence in the Beach. Stupidity runs rampid, but what else is new? I don't know this kid personally, so I can't judge at all, but he's not alone – so let's not single out. Many people drink/drive motorized vehicles all over not only Gerristen – but Brooklyn, New York, and the world. It's true though, that it's not a new occurence and the photographer mentioned is not the only person to suffer such a scare. But these quads (and motorized dirt bikes) zoom down the avenue, through the weeds, even the fields, and not only destroy property, but put themselves (by not wearing helmets or observing regulations) and others in danger. How many fatalaties must occur before someone stops these people from killing themselves? The destructive behaviors in the neighborhood must stop, but blaming all teenagers is not the solution. I think the problem is – there isn't enough for kids to do around her. No teen club, no teams, no clubs, nor meeting places – so they hang out in front of establishments and occupy themselves with law-breaking. It's a two-way street, but I do appreciate everyone's point of view and think everyone is partially right. There are better solutions then blogging/commenting hateful words.

A "Liar" would be someone who… well… does not tell the truth, so, by calling someone a "Liar" you'd be pointing out that he doesn't actually deal drugs. However… You're calling people here a "Snitch". Meaning: They are ratting on him for dealing drugs. So you pointed out that he's actually dealing drugs, and it isn't just gossip.

I fish the creek quite often and the same people who ride motocross bikes and quads down the trails don't bother you. Its the "outsiders" who come in from other parts that cause all the ruckus and have no regard at all for everyone else. I walk my way through the trails all the time and quite often at times, the sound of a engine prompts me to steer CLEAR of the way since these riders literally BLAST through the trails with limited visibility WOT.
