Beware: Robberies and Break-Ins

I know people won’t like it but here it is: There seems to be a rash of vehicle break-ins and robbery reportings going around facebook and the comments over the last few days.

The vehicle break-ins involve mostly unlocked vehicles. As reported previously these thefts resulted in cash, iPods, GPS tracking systems and other items being stolen.

Please report suspicious vehicles or persons in the neighborhood by calling 911. Please give the operator a physical description, what direction they were headed, as much information as possible if they are driving the vehicle’s license number, if possible.

Here is what has been making the rounds:

Please be aware that there are people breaking into houses and cars in Gerritsen Beach..Lock all your doors and call the police if you see anything suspicious..This has been going on for a couple of weeks now and is getting out of control..Something MUST be done about this..Enough is enough already!!!

Bevy Ct Break-Ins

The recent break-ins were on bevy between channel & devon. The lady tried to break into two of my cars. One she took change out of & spilled pepsi all over my seat, the other cars alarm triggered and she went down the block towards Devon ave. When I realized what had just happened I chased her around the block, where she told me in a drunken stupor and I quote” there was a big truck on gerritsen ave, that’s why, sorry about that”, so I smiled and said ” oh alright, no problem”. I continued to follow her without her knowing, and saw her try a handle on Celeste court between the same avenues. I then asked her where the truck was. She then said that was her car, and I being fed up exclaimed that I knew that wasn’t her car( She was infront of my friends house) and that I knew she had just broken into mine because there was spilled pepsi all over the seat, and she just happened to be holding a beverage of the same variety. She then broke down, started crying and said ” yea, the truth is, is that I’m homeless and I was looking for a place to sleep”. More words were exchanged and then my parents showed up, so I went back home to finish watching “The Doors” with my brother. Basically she looks like a frail 45-50 year old woman. Watch out for her, oh yea and she comes in the neighborhood from around ave W, because all the cars she attempted to rob trace back in a line over to that way.

Can I have some water?

The women was on Whitney Avenue and Plumb 2nd Street on Sunday.
She asked me for a cup of water. when I went inside to get it, my LARGE DOG kept her

Robbery Attempt

There was also a robbery in the new section, at 45 Hazel Ct. A male black attemped to break in through a window and was scared off by a neighbor who witnessed the attempted break in.

Early Morning Suspicion

The other incident in which my neighbors house was robbed, was a separate incident which happened in the morning a few days ago. It happened early in the morning at a time when the elderly woman was still sleeping but others were up going to school/ work. There is construction going on on my block. The only thing out of the ordinary that day, and I say this speaking the truth, was that some of the work crew witnessed a skinny, young, African American male, whom no one on the block had ever seen before, park his car up on the side walk. That’s it. A few of the guys saw him get back in his car, when he nervously said “Sorry for parking here”. He then fidgeted around with his keys for a moment and drove off. I don’t want to draw any false conclusions, but …

A few months back while walking down Gerritsen Ave. back into the beach with a friend, we were approached by a woman who fits the "Bevy cts break in" description. She seemed very high strung and would not make eye contact. She said her mother has just passed away, had no money or a place to stay. Perhaps this could be the same woman?

For the guy on Bevy Ct, Channel ave to Devon ave once you seen her you should have called 911 especially when she admitted to breaking into your car for a place to sleep. The cops would have came and she would have been arrested and at least identified. We need to stop complaining about it and call the police then follow up with it!!

About 345 this morning a "Skinny black man" was trying to climb through my window. My dog stopped him and the police came right away.

They came to my home, got the description and did a quick check around the property. One cop said, "This is not good…" They then quickly started combing the streets, with their spot lights, for anyone who met the description or was suspicious.

I unfortunately do not know if they caught him. is there a way to find out through the police?

GB Cares wanted free labor and used black criminals during the clean ups. Criminals that probably would have never stepped foot in the beach without the clean ups. They had to do community service as part of their sentence, but GB cares did not have to use them. They thought it was great to get free labor. Now those same people, or their friends and relatives maybe returning. Maybe they are bitter they had to clean. You could see the bitterness in their faces. Maybe they saw soft targets and easy marks. I don’t think GB cares realized that people that commit small crimes graduate to big crimes.

I said that from the time they started bringing community service workers down here, people said that they were petty crimes that they committed to get that sentence, but the truth is most of them had rap sheets a mile long with serious crimes in the past…burglary and robbery being among others.

Gerritsen Beach was better before GB cares existed. I can take overgrown weeds more then I can take criminals brazenly walking around and trying to rob the neighborhood. Muggings will be next. How criminals did GB cares use that never knew about Gerritsen Beach? I am sure GB cares did not cause this crime problem, but I would bet my last dollar they contributed to it.

Truth is the truth – they were all criminals and overwhelmingly black. How is that narrow minded and how does that promote a race?

Maybe it is the notariety GB is getting from this web site. This site is being read by people who never heard of GB and I'm sure with some of the comments has drawn some to see what it is about. Also talking up the skate park so kids are coming from all over. No longer a quiet little hamlet with the world wide web looking in at us.

Apparently the "crackhead woman" drives a car with Nevada plates and she was recently seen trying to get into a car on Allen a few days ago. Keep your doors locked, home and car, and be on the look out. No one is coming into MY home OR my neighbors. I'm looking out for my own.

That woman is harassing young kids for money and cigarettes while she cases the movements and patterns of the negihborhood residents – it’s disgusting. If she doesn't live here she should get the heck out or the cops should arrest or at least question her based on fitting the description of specific incidents of attempted robbery & burglary in the above comments.

I highly doubt if she or whoever is a crackhead or are high on crack when comitting these acts that they would be able to climb or jump fences or run anywhere. Is it just an assumption that she / they must be crackheads.

      SparksFlyUp,

You think because of a picture in an article just warning people to lock their doors, that there is a is a problem with the website?

I think you OBVIOUSLY don't live here because everyone knows who we are talking about and it's a major problem, not this website.

Maybe you want a picture of her instead?

      • SparksFlyUp

I don't think there is anything wrong with the article or the comments, in fact i think they're great. I just think there is something wrong with your choice of photos.

If she had been seen breaking into these cars with a crack pipe hanging from her lip… Fine. You Win. She's a crackhead. But until then, it's just your unsubstantiated opinion, and not a fact. That was my only point. Stick to the facts. That's all i'm saying.

I live here (I'm not Sparks Fly Up), I've seen her but I don't know who she is. Not everyone that lives here has been here forever. I guess many people know who she is and maybe her family because it doesn't add up that people have witnessed her trying to go through cars and windows and, except for one person, no mention of calling the cops. I guess this story is incomplete for a reason.

"SparksFlyUp" – When these people are breaking into your home, don't say we didnt warn you about a woman who's clearly strung out, and a skinny black male…..which no one ever said HE was a crackhead.

As for everyone else who's been commenting, I think it's amazing that the whole beach has come together and are helping one another….I feel a lot safer already to be honest.

About a week ago my husband heard a commotion outside at around 3am, as did our neighbor. They both went outside, they didn't see anyone however, they found 2 screwdrivers near a parked car. we believe that someone was trying to break into that vehicle based on the type of screwdrivers and the time of night. Something must've startled them and they left in a hurry.

This woman that is breaking into cars and houses, she has tried it during the day?? Also, is there more of a description someone can give other then a frail 45-50 yr old? Hair color, race/ethnicity, height, etc? Just curious.

The woman spoke to my daughter and her friends a few days ago, she appears to be 40-50 years old, short brown curly hair, thin, around 5ft 5, wearing white sneakers , pants and top and carrying a plastic shopping bag. She was pretended that she was crying. Told them she sleeps on a bench, and that her mother died.

I think thats an awesome idea!! I would imagine you should bring it up at the POA and have the volunteers go there to start a sign up list. Then organize a schedule along with the rules and responsibilities.

The same car should be used for the patrol so no one is singled out (but that would mean someone has to pay, donations or a fee I don't know maybe someone else has an idea about that.) we would not stop and confront anyone so retaliation should not be a problem, any suspicious activity would be reported to the police, hopefully we can have some type of direct link either radios or by just calling 911 but with some type of good response time knowing that it is a community patrol. I would not have a problem doing it after dark or even in the middle of the night I am up half the night now anyway, many retired law enforcement down here also may be an added benefit. LOL

While all of this is very upsetting to the neighborhood there are somethings that can be done….. When I worked in Williamsburg years ago the Hasidic's formed Community Watch Groups. They would show up at every Police roll-call in the 90th pct.{ Yes, you can do that } They would make sure that the number of Police that were supposed to be there actually were… They would also patrol thier own neighborhood, they had radios, and other communication methods…Get your neighbors phone number call each other if you see any criminal activity. Do Not confront criminals alone. 1- You might get hurt 2- You might need a witness to corroberate your story. Defending your property is your right but be careful.. You can only use deadly force when your life is in danger… An unarmed robber may not meet this qualification… Although many objects can be seen as weapons a screwdriver a,blunt instrument etc. Force can be met by force, again ,try and have a witness when possible…. We must face facts here this has happened down here and other areas before. Drug use is rampant all over. Heroin is more available then ever Crack can be made at home. I think that the comment about the map indicating where neighborhood crime is going on was a great idea… I thought the picture Dan used was great shock value to wake everybody up. Sometimes these kind of thing is needed. We sometimes live in a cacoon down here, thinking we are warm and safe… Wake up it is cold and dark in someplaces…..

It would be great to have a community watch with a patrol car. The way I envision it is that at dusk, a couple of people would patrol in a car around the neighborhood. There would be a number to call in case there was suspicious or nuisance activity. The patrol would either scare away would-be thieves or could speak rationally with the teens to take activity to the weeds instead of risking a police summons or worse. The problem is that few are going to volunteer their time after dark and nobody is going to volunteer their car to become a mark for retaliatory idiots. I might contribute my time; I’d definitely contribute some monthly subscription toward it if we could hire someone to do it.

That's true about the car. All the crime would be directed towards it, and god forbid the owner. I personally don't think there's a lack of police coming around, it's just these people of course arn't seen when they are here. I've seen the same undercover cop arrest three people on my block in the past few months…He's totally incognito and people never expect it.

The Police have an Auxillay program for a training course…. You can get a car and the proper training on your rights and responsability within the law…. We don't want to have a vigalinty mentality here….It is a dangerous way to go…..Dealing with the law ,is much different than dealing with the GBFD God bless them. I don't like to see GBcares bear any of the silly blame for who came to clean -up The truth is the land belongs to the Parks Dept. if GBC. did not accept the assigned people. The Parks would have sent them anyhow, and you would be blameing them instead….. The truth is GBC knows how to make the politicial structure work for the citizens, and get the grant money for us, and not allow us to be ignored….. Those who don't know it has to do with the tax structure of GBPOA and GBC. They are different animals when it comes to this and are also better able to hold the local politicans feet to the fire and make them work for our betterment….. Sure I liked The Beach better when we had dirt roads, no sewers and only the most hardy lived here and you never even saw a politician. To sum it up we asked for nothing and got nothing. Times have changed and we all must change with them

I think that the Police need our help as a community! First we need to stop bashing them for every little thing they do so they may be more inclined and welcome to be down here, second we need to call or report when anything suspicious happens here. I think that a community patrol would be a great idea especially if they could provide us with a car (unmarked) and a direct line to the 61 desk. If you dont call or make a Report they have no idea what is really going on here and cannot address the problem

Does anyone remember back in the 60's we had a rash of clothes line robberies? One nite stands out when I heard the family across fr me yelling about something and then I realized they had their laundry stolen from their clothesline. The dad said loud and clear thru all the ladies yelling, "who would want your girdle?" Yup, the theif or theives stole Vera's girdle. The robbers continued for awhile, I guess till they completed their wardrobe. The theives were homegrown we found out.
