It’s All In the Details

High Weeds at Seba

A couple of weeks ago around June 12th, the Parks Department came in and trimmed the weeds on Gerritsen Avenue. For the most part they did a good job, they took their huge tractors and basically just did a straight line from 277 to Seba Avenue Park. As you can see above, they overlooked most of the detail work around the trees and the guardrails.

What makes this worse is they pulled up with their equipment of tractors and weed whackers in front of these high weeds at Seba Avenue Park – and did not trim them. Every time they trim they seem to overlook these details that makes their work and our park look horrible.

To be fair, Parks does a good job. As of right now, the Avenue looks trim and walkable and they have been keeping it that way. They do usually miss some of the the small details around a tree or a section of guardrail, but never this obvious before. What is the Avenue? A mile and a half long? It’s a difficult job but it’s all in the details!

On a side note: The Parks Department is in charge of maintaining the parkland grass now. In years past GBCares was maintaining the parkland for the community. Now they aren’t allowed to used their equipment on city property for the betterment of the community. As far as we know, this arrangement may not change but if this lack of detail work continues we need GBCares back at 100%.

Parks only seems to trim every month or so. If you see a problem in the park call 311 to file a complaint.

Maybe there weedwacker broke. Looks good though. I remember biking back thru narrow trails with my cousin jo. It was mysterious to 10 yr olds and lots of adventure. Remember the smoldering spots. Think it was fermenting sludge waste.

What's the progress on GBcares taking this over again? I thought it was an insurance issue?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

      Anonymous,

It is an insurance issue. From what I understand the city wont allow me, you, or GBCares the permission to use heavy machinery or any major work on their property…meaning it's more of a liability issue. I would assume that even if me, you or GBCares had the insurance required they wouldn't let us work on the property because it's their property.

      • Anonymous

I think it has more to do with using their machines and tools in the event some was hurt. If someone were to go thru the parks with their own tools and equipment and got hurt or hurt someone the liability is not on the Parks. In the private world this would be a union issue but I highly doubt that is the case here.

I think folks affiliated with GBcares should do it anyway if it's a matter of not letting them do it even WITH insurance and their own machines. What's the worst they'd do if they even happen to catch anyone? Maybe wait until the City cuts down the tall weeds and then move in for the trim when they're gone. Nobody's gonna offically care to take punitive action.

Why can't they sign an agreement that the City is not liable for any injuries that accur during GBcares activity.

It does look better than it did before. Maybe a bit of weed kill will do the job…somewhat, or it mite help. You know Gerritsen Beach is known for it fund raisings, maybe you can hold a fund raiser or put jars in the stores and ask for donations to get some weed kill, … well its a thought anyway.good luck nd i hope things work out. i miss the beach, it a beautiful place to live. My parents still live there and i ant wait to come back to visit next month. you know what you really need is another Mary Melia … she was a great help. She always did the 50/50's i dont know if you remember. Kathy

Marine Park has a group of blue shirts who seem to take care of the details that don't require the use of heavy equipment. Maybe some of those folks could be dispatched to tidy things up.

This is to continue on the break ins and crack head lady etc….A few weeks ago and just a moment ago, undercover police appeared out of know where and arrested people right in front of my home. A few weeks ago it was four guys layed out in the street, just now a guy cuffed and thrown in the back of the car.

So just in case someone is reading this and is thinking of coming into the beach to rob people or break into cars etc….Don't bother. It's not gonna happen.

The recent break-ins were on bevy between channel & devon. The lady tried to break into two of my cars. One she took change out of & spilled pepsi all over my seat, the other cars alarm triggered and she went down the block towards Devon ave. When I realized what had just happened I chased her around the block, where she told me in a drunken stupor and I quote" there was a big truck on gerritsen ave, that's why, sorry about that", so I smiled and said " oh alright, no problem". I continued to follow her without her knowing, and saw her try a handle on Celeste court between the same avenues. I then asked her where the truck was. She then said that was her car, and I being fed up exclaimed that I knew that wasn't her car( She was infront of my friends house) and that I knew she had just broken into mine because there was spilled pepsi all over the seat, and she just happened to be holding a beverage of the same variety. She then broke down, started crying and said " yea, the truth is, is that I'm homeless and I was looking for a place to sleep". More words were exchanged and then my parents showed up, so I went back home to finish watching "The Doors" with my brother. Basically she looks like a frail 45-50 year old woman. Watch out for her, oh yea and she comes in the neighborhood from around ave W, because all the cars she attempted to rob trace back in a line over to that way.

There was also a robbery in the new section, at 45 Hazel Ct. A male black attemped to break in through a window and was scared off by a neighbor who witnessed the attemped break in. But not before the lowlife grabbed a wallet from inside the window. Maybe GB.net can investigate this story further, without making the cops out to be criminals and the criminal an innocent victim like in his skate park, race baiting story.

GB Cares wanted free labor and used black criminals during the clean ups. Criminals that probably would have never stepped foot in the beach without the clean ups. They had to do community service as part of their sentence, but GB cares did not have to use them. They thought it was great to get free labor. Now those same people, or their friends and relatives maybe returning. Maybe they are bitter they had to clean. You could see the bitterness in their faces. Maybe they saw soft targets and easy marks. I don't think GB cares realized that the people that commit the kind of crimes that get community service also commit the big crimes later on.

I know this is off topic but……For some mysterious reason, the comments under the story "Vandals Caught Defacing Property on the Avenue" do not show up on the home page under the "Recent Comments" link. Hmmmmm. I wonder why. Is it because Danny from GB.net's own cousin has been positively identified as one of the vandals caught on videotape? And is he trying to hide that fact by disabling the recent comments links for that story, thus reducing the number of people reading it? Read the latest comments under that story if you wanna know who was captured on videotape vandalizing the new building on the avenue.

The other incident in which my neighbors house was robbed, was a separate incident which happened in the morning a few days ago. It happened early in the morning at a time when the elderly woman was still sleeping but others were up going to school/ work. There is construction going on on my block.  The only thing out of the ordinary that day, and I say this speaking the truth, was that some of the work crew witnessed a skinny, young,  African American male, whom no one on the block had ever seen before, park his car up on the side walk. That's it. A few of the guys saw him get back in his car, when he nervously said "Sorry for parking here". He then fidgeted around with his keys for a moment and drove off. I don't want to draw any false conclusions, but …

Instead of staring at some black kids who aren't doing anything wrong, why don't you round up the nieghborhood white idiots who race up & down the courts in convertible white cars endangering anyone who steps out of their house in the old section? Or the ones who do donuts and leave innocent bystanders in a cloud of smoke? Or the neighborhood white kids who can't make it all the way home from their underage drinking party without stopping to take a piss in someone's driveway?

I think perhaps we need to get a neighborhood patrol to look out for one another, it's scary but it's not the same neighborhood as it was when my husband and I moved in over 20 years ago. Too many people who don't live here come and see that doors and cars are left unlocked and while that may have been safe back then, not so much anymore. A lot of people who don't live here going to the park and beach.

While you're at it, peer through their windows, you know, just to check out their decor. Let me know how you make out, Guess what, the more things change the more they stay the same. Trust me it is a double standard here, if you are white and walk through a predominately black neighborhood you will be stared at and made to feel uncomfortable. If you peer in a window they will relentlessly kick your ass and a crowd will form protesting your actions because they stick together, something we used to do. For the bleeding heart liberals why don't you go to East New York, Bedsty, or east flatbush and hang out in their park or peer throught their windows, lets see what happens.

A suspicious car with a Black Thin male and a medium built hispanic women was seen parked by the Cort club yesterday. It has been mentioned many times that a thin black male has been committing the most recent break ins. A dark colored car, a Maxima with NY plates ETP-5618. Windows slightly tinted. Flood 911 with calls of suspicious activity. This will be the only way it stopped. By the way, that was the cop in the 61 suggestion. If you see something that doesn't look right, call 911. No problem, no excuses. Tell everybody you know to look out for this car.

Has anyone been up on the fields recently ? They are a disgrace with garbage and weeds. When was the last time the Parks Dept was there, all that is not from 2 or 3 days of people using the fields.

I went on the Parks Dept web site and found inspections that they perform at the parks. The ballfields have been rated UNACCEPTABLE overall for at least 3 years. Does that mean the Parks dept just forgets the fields and leaves them.
