Manhattan Beach is just as interesting as Gerritsen Beach. They are a community that wanted to ban “thugs” from “their” beach, Ban Barbecuing, then they divided with two civic groups, they even sued themselves, but nothing tops the “Bias Beach Bust” where Cops barred black teens from using a public beach in response to senior cut day two years ago.
Yesterday, police and community groups from Manhattan Beach and Sheesphead Bay believed yesterday was senior cut day. Naturally the two Manhattan Beach Groups have been preparing for this day all year; making sure the NYPD knows they want nothing short of the army coming in to protect thier neighborhood.
Yesterday, the 61st Precinct and Broklyn South Patrol stepped up their force in Manhattan Beach and Sheepshead Bay. They posted guards at the Sheepshead bay foot bridge, Sheesphead Bay Road, and increased their numbers at Manhattan Beach.
According to Captain Mastrokostas they did grab at least one group of students and brought them to the TRACK Center for truancy. The Track Center is for students found by an officer not in school between the hours of 9 AM and 12 PM. Other than that, there was not Cut Day turnout expected and it was just an ordinary day at the beach.

Dan: You seem to be mocking the Police and the community groups of Manhatten Beach for trying to control thier streets……… I disagree with your cynicial assessments. Two weeks ago in Rockaway students took over the beach from the Beach 80's up to Beach 116th St. There were fights breaking out all along the beach. It continued all day and ended up in stabbings and beatings on the trains… The police were totally unprepared for the ensueing riot conditions they had to confronrt. Protection of citizens is thier job, and protection of neighborhoods, public or not, is the job of the citizens… See last weeks local WAVE newspaper and read how bad it can get…..A tip of the hat to those who want to keep rowdies from seizeing the streets and public beaches…

I had heard about the rockaway melee. I didn't intend to sound like I was mocking the police here they were well prepared for the day. However, I did throw a few friendly jabs at manhattan beach :)
Wow, the 61 does a great job at deterring violence and preventing a scene like the previous year and instead of a pat on the back, you mock them. Gerritsen Beach will never be as nice as Manhattan Beach, just get over it.

Dan : I am glad you heard about the Rockaway melee as you call it. Although you are missing the point. I would not call riot conditions, where Police have to be brought from other precints to gain control a "melee".. It was a mob beating and stabbing other people on the beach and subway system .I think any neighborhood that is forced to accept this behavior will suffer. This is, and was ,serious breach of civilized conduct by students. You can jab all you want at Manhatten Beach but if they can't control thier own streets we will all be in trouble..I know that given your age you have never seen a rioting mob.Well, I have in the late 60's and 70's it is not pretty and damn scary to be there.

Amazing to me that you had to read it in The Wave, not that it's not a fine publication, but you would think that this would have been reported in the News or Post. Or on the evening news, or did I just miss it?

Excellent job again by the 61st pct in preventing violence at Manhattan Beach during senior cut day, like the stabbing and shooting that occurred three years ago.
