Looks like the driver may have hit that stupid island while making the turn. Nothing against the driver, I hope he or she is ok but I can see that happening, you trying to make the turn before the light changes, hit the gas a little to hard and hit that stupid island and you flip the vehicle.

I was there, from what I heard standing there that's exactly what happened Guy was making the turn, clipped the island and hit the gas next thing he was on his side.

Its a shame that things like this have to happen, but maybe this incident and the other minor fender benders that have happened at the same corner will make them see that a plan that was thought up ten years ago doesn't work now. The DOT needs to take another look at the way they handle traffic.

Nothing short of a school bus full of nuns and orphans crashing and burning will make them re-look at that. Maybe when a house burns down because that firehouse is blocked in by all the traffic it causes something will happen, though doubtful. Democracy at its finest.

Democracy has nothing to do with the DOT's seemingly bottomless budget.

Replace "nuns and orphans" with "curly cues" and that is when they will rethink that dilemma.

Tests results have shown that those bells will make a car flip over if it is hit!!! Aside from common sense which DOT does not use. DOT is and has not been listening to us. Here is your first flipped car due to that ill thought and planned island with the bells, not to mention the INCREASED traffic. Why did they irresponsibly spend our money on something so foolish that does not even work??? Why don't we have a say?

We don't have a say, because of "arrogance"… but, we do have a say, because of the internet and websites/blogs. The politicians and the bureaucrats read–and when they get scared–they sometimes act on what they read.

In fact, some of their staff members will click on "Dislike" when they read this.

Cars can make left turns from Avenue U onto Gerritsen…they can't make them coming from Gerritsen onto Avenue U from the Beach. And where does traffic flow??? People are in the wrong lane & making lefts from the right lane off Knapp onto Gerritsen.

There is a green arrow at that corner for making lefts from Avenue U to Gerritsen. It gives you at least 30 seconds to make the turn before your faced with oncoming traffic. The other problem is the cars making the left onto Avenue U going towards Kings Plaza, they have no regard for the light and continually go through the red when the Avenue U traffic has the green arrow. This causes the people trying to make the left from Avenue U to Gerritsen gun the gas to avoid waiting for the oncoming traffic to clear and thats how you could flip your vehicle.

Out of curiosity, when do you drive that traffic flows better? When I leave for work in the morning I have to drive on the lines to get around cars double and triple parked by the school and when I come home it is no different.

where is this improved traffic flow. Ebony Court has a major increase in traffice to Florence Ave becuase people try to avoid the ave,

If a truck needs to deliver onthe avenue it becomes a nightmare. and coming out of Florence, where we REALLY need a light is a horror during most traffic times…becuase people swing out around parked trucks or cars…into the center "divider" and almost cause accidents….what a mess…and the corner at U is a joke as is the so called traffice pattern on knapp where the right lane is supposed to be a turn lane….omg…genius at work…

The traffic flow is now worse than ever.

This AM I was driving southbound on Gerritsen drossing U with the intention of going to the Mobil station. There is only one lane of traffic while once there were 2, so my intent was to bear right. But 2 impatient drivers instead decided to get in the right "turning" lane to get ahead of the bus in front on me southbound on Gerritsen. Granted these motorists were doing something dangerous and illegal usiong theat lane as a passing lane, but their frustration is a given and due entirely to this idiotic traffic pattern. This is not "traffic calming". Wound up having to wait to turn onto Knapp and then turn right on V and come around the block rather than deal with this stupidity.

Also anyone driving northbound on Knapp where it intersects and merges into Gerritsen knows both lanes invariably feed northbound into Gerritsen causeing a backup. If anyone is coming down Knapp and wants to go south on Gerritsen they are making a right turn on V or before.

There was nothing wrong with the old setup. DOT is a bunch of schmucks with access to NYC's budget.

tootsieroe0815@yahoo.com is obviously either highly medicated or needs to be if he/she thinks traffic flow has improved. The whole point of the dividers is to CAUSE TRAFFIC!!! Everyday just to get out of Gerritsen Beach is a battle, when it does not have to be. And thats the real shame of it.

Sounds like a bad driver was at fault, rather than traffic calming or the DOT.

I agree with you. The road was wet and the driver was probably trying to make the light, going too fast.

We can't blame everything on DOT.

  • [...] After the pedestrian island was installed at Gerritsen and Avenue U this has been – at least – the second car to flip there this year. The first was in May. [...]

I geuss the RAIN night be “guilty”. I remember that rainy day, when I traveled to yet another part of Brooklyn.

A solution must be taken by plasing a brig red wall with reflectors on an island.

Check out this story on CBS. I believe when these islands were first installed people voiced their concerns about the issue of safety and now we see the result of DOT’s handiwork.
