Whitney Avenue to Become Veterans Way on Memorial Day

Thanks to a helpful push by the VFW and City Leaders – Whitney Avenue at Burnett street will now recognize veterans with a street naming.

Councilman Lew Fidler who has introduced the street naming legislation said. “It is fitting that we honor the fine men and women who have served our country and I am proud to have introduced this legislation at the City Council. Veterans’ contributions are immeasurable and this dedication is a small token of our appreciation.”

The ceremony for the street naming will be held during the annual Memorial Day parade, and will take place on Mon, May 31 at 10:00 a.m.

There is one snag, there is a general rule that the city only hangs one sign for these street namings. At a very minimum there will be a sign at Burnett and Whitney, on the corner. The Councilman has asked for an exception to the one sign rule and is trying to get signs on the corners of Whitney/Stuart and Whitney/ Gerritsen.

This is great. Who do we call to help get the signs posted on all the corners? The VFW is a great organization & we all owe our way of life today to the VFW's of the past & present. It is great to see them get some current recognition.

It was a long overdue honor to the men and women who served our country, anywhere, anytime. In particular, from Gerritsen Beach, a community from which we are still sending our youth off to fight wars. I doubt any other community in Brooklyn has had as many men and women serve as we have had since 9/11.

A few good men at the Argonne Marine Park VFW Post 107 initiated the process for a sign to honor veterans. For those who are not aware–and I was one, until we got involved in the process–It then required approval by GBPOA, which was a given, and also by CB15, which took some time and special presentations.

Our presentation called for a sign on Gerritsen, Stuart St. and Burnett St. along Whitney Avenue, similar to the signs on Ave. X honoring Christopher Columbus.

CB15 had made it policy to limit new signs to honor NY fireman and police who died in the line of duty. Ultimately, the chairperson of signage at CB15, convinced her committee to approve the sign. We owe that person a special thank you. Another person who stepped up to the plate to get approval of the sign was the Chairperson of CB15.

The final hurdle required approval of the City Council, and our Councilman Lew Fidler carried the ball across the goal line. Getting approval for honorary street signs often takes many years, and in this we owe our Councilman a special thank you. Thanks, Lew, we are looking forward to 3 signs at some point in time, if not Memorial Day.
