Police say a man shot and killed himself in Marine Park, Brooklyn as they responded to a 911 call of a burglary in progress.
Authorities said the incident happened around 6:22 p.m. Monday at 3701 Quentin Road. Police say they arrived on the scene and were confronted by an armed man, who fired his handgun at police.
Police say a uniformed Sergeant returned fire and struck the suspect once in his right leg.
The suspect then ran onto Quentin Road, where witnesses said the man shot himself in the head, according to police.
Police recovered a loaded 9MM gun at the scene. A medical examiner must still determine the cause of death.
No further details were available as of late Monday night.

Neighbors are saying the 2 perps tried to break into a house but the owner was home and just happened to be a cop. Score 1 for the good guys. Now let's the the other dirtbag.

That address is not Gerritsen but based on the number of Police and other civil servants living here, I'd say anyone stupid enough to try a break-in can expect the same results.

good to hear that no innocents were injured.
this does make me think what a shame it is that only cops can protect their families from armed intruders. i guess the rest of us will have to hope the perps leave peacefully.

Self defence for the individual citizen is an inalienable right. Past generations have been led to believe that the police are there to protect you. It is a foolish notion, and can be proven in the crime stats.
When you give away natural rights you do nothing more than become a victim, and force the same on those who choose to be self sufficient, and peaceful.

I am baffled by the thumbs down on this comment. Why would anyone have anything against our right to defend ourselves including our right to bear arms? I don't know what anonymous is talking about when they say that 'it's a shame that only cops can protect their families from armed intruders'. Did I miss something? As far as I know, although there are those who would foolishly like to disarm the law abiding citizens of this country, it hasn't happened yet. And I hope it never does.

A Brooklyn man who shot and wounded an intruder while defending his family will spend three days in Rikers Island, the same jail housing the burglar who terrorized his home, because he owns an unregistered gun.
Ronald Dixon, a 27-year-old father of two, caught an intruder rifling through drawers in his son’s room early on Dec. 14.
“I went in. … I looked in his face. I didn’t know this guy; I was so shocked … In a nervous voice I said, ‘What are you doing in my house?’ and he ran toward me yelling, ‘Come upstairs!’ like there were other people with him. I shot him ’cause I thought more people were in the house,” Dixon told the New York Daily News.
Dixon fired two shots from his 9 mm pistol, wounding the suspected burglar in the chest and groin.
“The only thing I could think about was my family – there was no telling what he would do to my children or girlfriend,” he told the paper.
Authorities charged Dixon with illegal possession of a firearm when they discovered his gun was not legally registered in New York, a charge that carries up to a year in prison.
When Dixon proved he had obtained the firearm legally in Florida and tried to register it in New York, the prosecutors agreed to a charge of disorderly conduct.
Dixon pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charge, which will allow him to do time without carrying a criminal record. Sentencing is scheduled for June 27, WINS Radio reports.
The intruder turned out to be Ivan Thompson, a career criminal with a 14-page rap sheet. Thompson has been arrested 19 times and been convicted of criminal trespass, burglary and attempted assault. He currently is on parole until 2004 on burglary charges.
“Clearly [Dixon] was justified in shooting this burglar, and the burglar is going to get as much jail time as we can get him,” Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes told the News.
But Hynes will not budge from his tough anti-gun policy.
“If you get caught with a gun in Brooklyn, you’re going to do jail time,” said Hynes, who has held that stance since taking office in 1990, when, he says, “Brooklyn was like Dodge City.”
Dixon’s case has attracted widespread attention and many letters addressed to Hynes, including this anonymous letter, which sums up the feelings of many supporters:
“If you were in the same position that Mr. Dixon was in, I would be willing to wager that you would also use whatever means you had on hand to defend your loved ones, as any of us would.
“By prosecuting Ronald Dixon on spurious charges, you are sending a very dangerous message to the residents in your jurisdiction: Defend your family, go to jail. You are also sending an equally dangerous message to the criminal element, who would realize that law-abiding citizens would now be hesitant to defend themselves for fear of criminal prosecution, and therefore make prime targets for violent crime.”
A Jamaican immigrant, Dixon served in the Navy from 1994 to 1997 in weapons ordnance and holds down two computer-related jobs.
“I work seven days a week. I have been doing it for three years, because I wanted a safe haven for my family,” he told the News.
“I thought the house would give me a safe haven. Now I’m thinking if I didn’t buy this house this never would have happened.”

Hillary Clinton Pledged last week to the UN to have a small arms treaty in place within a year. Pay attention folks, this is a step towards disarming America. I am all for disarming criminals and closing the gun show loophole, but disarming law abiding citizens is dangerous for us all. The article above said that Dixon tried to register the gun. Why couldn’t he? As a law abiding person with no police record why shouldn’t he have been able to register a gun to protect his family? The police can’t be everywhere and many times cops are after the fact. People have a right to defend themselves and on another level, our right to bear arms keeps the United States safe. After WWll, when asked why they had not tried to invade the US, Yamamoto said “there would have been a gun behind every blade of grass”. Our guns keep us safe. Don’t allow Hillary Clinton and the other globalists take away that right!

Good to see the story being reported accurately this morning as it was not last night. I guess it was one of those, we don't have to verify anything type of situations as long as it sells.
Either way a POS has been taken out of this world and hopefully the Finest will track down his buddy and the huge increase in burglaries in Marine Park will come to an end.
Great job by the Sergeant getting to the location quickly and reacting.

It's time for Marine Park residents to wake up. Marine Park residents need to start watching who they are bringing into the neighborhood. Has anyone noticed that the majority of nannies, store clerks and construction workers are illegal aliens? Has anyone considered that these people are casing their houses and the houses of their neighbors? There is very little police presence in the neighborhood during the day. WAKE UP!

How do YOU know that they are illegal? Do you ask to see their green cards or immigration paperwork? I totally agree if you are saying that there are way too many immigrants allowed into this country, as well as too many illegals, but I think that alot of people assume everyone they see who is obviously from another country is 'illegal'. I also think that targeting the people who are in the neighborhood WORKING at menial jobs are not usually the ones looking to commit crimes. Why not look instead to the basketball courts and handball courts that are filled with people with no jobs at all?

On the block where I live I have actually asked the homeowners (my neighbors) if their respective nannies or gardeners or cleaning women or handymen are documented workers…the response is that they are not…as for the people on the basketball and handball courts how do YOU know they are not merely participating in recreational activity…did YOU ask to see their pay stubs? In any event, they are not casing the inside of houses. As for too many immigrants being allowed into this country illegally, that is another matter entirely. Who is doing the targeting?

OK, just to be clear. The guy was a low life career criminal that lived in Marine Park (when not in jail). The only thing illegal about him were his actions. He was in and out of jail for the past 17+ years and out on parole. He killed himself because he got caught and did not want to go back to jail. MP is still a nice area and home invasions can happen anywhere.

Where did you get this information? I've been looking at all of the media outlets for a follow-up to this story- who the perp was, if his accomplice was caught- and I've found nothing. Why does Marine Park get so little attention?

I found out through someone who knows his son. MP is very small and similar to GB and everyone knows someone. I also know his wake will be at Marine Park. Sad considering it is a "neighborhood" establishment and that they would do it. I guess money is more important then reputation.

Live on 35th, whoever you “found out” from was wrong. He did not live in Marine Park. In addition he was not a lowlife, but severely misguided. These issues are more complex than the people on here boil it down to. The Daily News article is also slightly inaccurate.

They need to discuss lack of police presence in Marine Park. Marty Golden is conducting a Town Hall meeting on Thursday from 7-8 at Marine Park Junior High. I hope there will be a big turnout for that one. It's time to rally the troops.

I have noticed an influx on immigrants in our neighborhood- whether documented or not- which our government has ceased to address- putting further stress on our infrastructure. My son plays basketball at Marine Park with his friends- he goes to school full time and enjoys his time with his friends, who could be Afro-American, Jewish or just neighborhood people. There has been an influx of affluent people, who have a large majority of immigrant people working for them, since the mothers choose to work, using their cell phones and driving—which really ticks me off, endangering our children–yes I worry about my sons. I see an accident a week, especially on Ave. R and Nostrand.

Let's avoid generalizations here, huh? The Marine Park I grew up in and now live in as an adult is a place of varied races, religions, and political parties, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Call out the racists, the classists, the xenophobes, and so on— but your generalization of "Marine Park" as all of these things is just as prejudiced.

What exactly are you reading or reading into? I do not see how any of the remarks made on this site are "unbelievably racist and xenophobic." The post you are responding to is the last one to be considered as such. I read "just neighborhood people" as perhaps meaning "an average person in the neighborhood." Nowhere in these posts do I read about a "person of color." Illegal immigrants, undocumented workers are mentioned — that could be any race/ethnicity. You are making assumptions. Marine Parkers overwhelming racist? anti-semitic? Having lived in the neighborhood for over 30 years, I can tell you that Marine Parkers have embraced all ethnicities. Clearly, that chip on your shoulder inhibits your "judgment."

The increase has nothing to do with the increase of immigrants into Marine Park. Marine Park has always had immigrants whether they where Irish, Italian, Spanish or Mexican the same economic and educational level of the residents has been very similar. Some of the largest issues in the area in terms of crime are that of local teenagers dealing drugs out of their homes. Let's be realistic this occurs. The real increase in crime can be attributed to one the economic down turn which is seeing a spike in all of NYC since the recession.
Unfortunately the local police department is more concerned about giving the residents of Marine Park and Mill Basin parking tickets with "Ticket Tony" over putting together a strategy to fight crime. The claim to fame that the department tells the community is Chief Fox is from the area so crimes a priority. Has anyone seen the Chief walk the beat in the area? No nor is it his job.
Where are the elect officals besided Senator Golden yelling in the papers for a stronger polic presence? No where. If this happened in Borough Park Dov Hikind would have the Ray Kelly on his door step. We as a community need to have a block representative on every block that is part of the civic association. Unfortunately our Civic Association is a group of Ave S business owners that aren't going to do it.
Hopefully Golden can do something since he is the only one that has stepped up to the plate. Missing in action again Weiner, Maisel and LEW.

Yes, immigrants have always resided in Marine Park — Irish, Italian, etc. and yes, of the same economic and educational level — however, they were/are legal, taxpaying citizens. I stress taxpaying. Taxpayers are the backbone of the community, indeed the country. If the economic downturn is responsible for the proliferation of crime, then why not give out-of-work citizens/local residents a chance to earn money? There are many out-of-work residents in the community who would appreciate the opportunity to take a job as a nanny, caregiver, store clerk, deliveryman, construction worker, gardener, etc. Homeowners need to support their community, not undocumented workers.

Look the issue with if your an illegal or legal member of Marine Park doesn't matter. What matters the most that the local polic are mor focused on doling out parking tickets then the are with putting together a crime fighting plan. This has always been with the department in this area. Everyone knows that if you some here it's either you don't want to work hard or your a screw up. Cops want action we don't offer action. We offer retirement.
If Chuck Schumer was still our Congressman and Herb Berman was out Councilman we would get a response since those two men work hard for us and had power. Unlike the current ligh weights in office.
